Picturing Reform in Victorian Britain

Picturing Reform in Victorian Britain

Janice Carlisle

Cambridge University Press
2012
sidottu
How did Victorians, as creators and viewers of images, visualize the politics of franchise reform? This study of Victorian art and parliamentary politics, specifically in the 1840s and 1860s, answers that question by viewing the First and Second Reform Acts from the perspectives offered by Ruskin's political theories of art and Bagehot's visual theory of politics. Combining subjects and approaches characteristic of art history, political history, literary criticism and cultural critique, Picturing Reform in Victorian Britain treats both paintings and wood engravings, particularly those published in Punch and the Illustrated London News. Carlisle analyzes unlikely pairings - a novel by Trollope and a painting by Hayter, an engraving after Leech and a high-society portrait by Landseer - to argue that such conjunctions marked both everyday life in Victorian Britain and the nature of its visual politics as it was manifested in the myriad heterogeneous and often incongruous images of illustrated journalism.

The authors--Janice, Stephanie, Ryan, Marley--were part of Elena's opening team who came together, burnt out from years in the restaurant industry and ready to start afresh. Their answer was to create a restaurant that was also a healthy working environment (gasp). At Elena, it's all about making the most of a good thing--and the same goes for this book. Whether it's planning a dinner (salad, pizza, wine? pizza, pasta, dessert? salad, meat, hoagie?), or letting go of stuff that no longer serves you, Salad Pizza Wine encourages you to choose your own adventure--both in the kitchen and in life. Written in a self-deprecating, tongue-in-cheek style, this is a cookbook you'll really want to cook from, as well as to read. Cowardice. Bravery. War calls to the best and the worst in humanity. Ordinary people answer that call in different ways: by finding their courage, by acting from the basest weakness, or by avoiding the call for as long as possible. An account of loss and reconciliation, collaboration and resistance, and the flowering of courage in unlikely soil, TAKE THE WAR tells an untold tale from the 20th century's World Wars. Based on true stories, including unpublished letters and diaries of heroines living and dead, TAKE THE WAR captures the Resistance roles played by women in WWI and WWII in France and Belgium. A new contribution to war literature, a story untold, TAKE THE WAR sheds light on the experience of ordinary women who attempt to navigate daily life in wartime settings, while finding their courage and becoming heroes.
Brand Planning for the Pharmaceutical Industry

Brand Planning for the Pharmaceutical Industry

Written by John Lidstone and Janice MacLennan, the second edition of Marketing Planning for the Pharmaceutical Industry became accepted as the bible for the industry. In this new companion book Janice MacLennan picks up two of the themes touched on in Marketing Planning - market segmentation and branding, and the inter-relationship between these two - and with this book makes them key topics for discussion. Brand Planning for the Pharmaceutical Industry begins by exploring what branding is and why it is of importance, particularly to the pharmaceutical sector. The book then goes on to show how branding can be integrated into the early stages of the commercialization process for new products, both in theory and in the 'real' world. The book provides a step-by-step guide to brand planning, using market segmentation as the starting point. The book is split into two parts, the first dealing comprehensively with brand planning for products yet to get to the market, with the second part applying the same process to products that are already on the market. Both parts are extremely pragmatic, full of pertinent examples and insights from the pharmaceutical industry, and are directly applicable to your own brand planning. Brand Planning for the Pharmaceutical Industry concludes by confronting the problems that organizations are likely to have in actually making brand planning an integral part of their work and presents strategies for dealing with them.

This guide introduces readers to key issues in the interpretation and reception of Colossians. Anderson first explores the issue of Pauline authorship. She challenges readers to reflect on why the question of authorship has dominated scholarship as well as why and how interpreters create “stories” about the letter. Second, Anderson examines rhetoric and context. She asks readers to consider how the letter constructs and seeks to persuade its addressees past and present. She surveys several pictures of the first audience and “opponents.” Finally, Anderson delves into the functions of the Colossian household code, its reception, and the ethics of interpretation.
