Fighting Diabetes the High Tech Way: A Silicon Valley CEO's quest to save his life with technology
Diagnosed with Type II diabetes at the height of his career as a Silicon Valley CEO, Gerald Hsu spent the next decade relying on prescribed medication to control his condition. Unfortunately, his health continued to deteriorate. Refusing to succumb to a life of insulin injections and dialysis treatments, Gerald took it upon himself to study and learn about chronic diseases and food nutrition. He then combined his newfound knowledge of these areas with his background in mathematics, computer science, physics, engineering, psychology, and business management to create a nonprofit diabetes research organization and a breakthrough diabetes management software system, eclaireMD. Utilizing the system he developed to identify, assess, treat, and monitor his diabetes, Gerald was able to reverse much of the damage done to his health and reduce the dosages of his medications until he ceased taking them completely. This is a story of one extraordinary man's journey to save his own life and his hope to share his knowledge-and the life-saving, high-tech tools he developed-with the world.
Structural and thermal analysis of a exhaust valve of a diesel engine
This book presents a method for analysis of the structural and thermal behavior of exhaust valve of internal combustion engine. The purpose of the analysis is to study the characteristics of exhaust valve under given thermal load and stresses. The result obtained from analysis is verified. At the design stage it is necessary to predict accurately, the behavior of exhaust valve under given load and speed. Nowadays, model analysis using ANSYS has become a common tool for studying the behavior of complex mechanical structures. However the analysis of extensive data sets that are obtained during model testing requires additional efforts for the development of dedicated model parameter estimation methods. The main objective of this project is to carry out Finite Element Analysis (FEA) in view to predict temperature distribution across the exhaust valve. Several specific features of the original design then is modified depending upon results, in view to reduce temperature of the exhaust valve. This project work also includes drawing 3D model of the valve, meshing and analysis by using ANSYS.

The new edition of this popular book has been substantially revised and provides a practical step-by-step guide to community profiling, invaluable for students and practitioners involved in community-based research. The book begins with consideration of what a community profile is, explores the different reasons why community profiles are undertaken and offers tips for planning research. It then looks at methods for collecting, storing and analysing data, and ways of involving the community, concluding with a chapter on ensuring your profile has impact. This book is fully updated throughout and includes: A new chapter on links between community profiling, policy development and practice A new chapter on selecting methods for data collection Bulleted key issues at the end of each chapter Case studies and boxed examples Further reading and a list of additional resources A new appendix for those who want to undertake more complex research A new glossaryCommunity Profiling is essential reading for anyone engaged in community profiling, social auditing, needs assessment or community consultation. Community workers and community practitioners across a range of disciplines including regeneration, neighbourhood management, library services, housing, health, youth work and social care will find it especially useful. It is also a helpful resource for voluntary and community organisations and students required to undertake community-based research.

Are Museums Irrelevant? Museums are rarely acknowledged in the global discussion of climate change, environmental degradation, the inevitability of depleted fossil fuels, and the myriad local issues concerning the well-being of particular communities – suggesting the irrelevance of museums as social institutions. At the same time, there is a growing preoccupation among museums with the marketplace, and museums, unwittingly or not, are embracing the values of relentless consumption that underlie the planetary difficulties of today.Museums in a Troubled World argues that much more can be expected of museums as publicly supported and knowledge-based institutions. The weight of tradition and a lack of imagination are significant factors in museum inertia and these obstacles are also addressed. Taking an interdisciplinary approach, combining anthropology ethnography, museum studies and management theory, this book goes beyond conventional museum thinking.Robert R. Janes explores the meaning and role of museums as key intellectual and civic resources in a time of profound social and environmental change. This volume is a constructive examination of what is wrong with contemporary museums, written from an insider’s perspective that is grounded in both hope and pragmatism. The book’s conclusions are optimistic and constructive, and highlight the unique contributions that museums can make as social institutions, embedded in their communities, and owned by no one.
