A Line Drawn in the Sand

A Line Drawn in the Sand

In the nearly three decades since the AIDS epidemic was first recognized, scientists have made tremendous strides in devising treatments for people living with HIV/AIDS. Yet in Africa, where more than 60 percent of HIV-infected people live, treatments remain out of reach for most. A Line Drawn in the Sand captures the determination of several African nations in tackling the challenge of providing lifesaving antiretroviral therapies to their citizens: Botswana, which has some of the highest HIV infection rates worldwide; Nigeria, whose epidemic threatens to become one of the world’s largest; Senegal, often touted as one of the few countries with a model response to the HIV/AIDS epidemic; and Tanzania, whose extreme poverty threatens efforts to stem its epidemic. By emphasizing the dramatic results that investments in AIDS treatments in Africa can bring, the book provides lessons to nations about scaling up their own treatment responses, hope to individuals and communities confronted with the often devastating impact of AIDS, and inspiration to the international HIV/AIDS community.

Is American vision implicitly possessive, as a generation of critics contends? By viewing the American poetic tradition through the prism of pragmatism, Elisa New contests this claim. A new reading of how poetry "sees," her work is a passionate defense of the power of the poem, the ethics of perception, and the broader possibilities of American sight.American poems see more fully, and less invasively, than accounts of American literature as an inscription of imperial national ideology would allow. Moreover, New argues, their ways of seeing draw on, and develop, a vigorous mode of national representation alternative to the appropriative sort found in the quintessential American genre of encounter, the romance. Grounding her readings of Dickinson, Frost, Moore, and Williams in foundational texts by Edwards, Jefferson, Audubon, and Thoreau, New shows how varieties of attentiveness and solicitude cultivated in the early literature are realized in later poetry. She then discloses how these ideas infuse the philosophical notions about pragmatic experience codified by Emerson, James, and Dewey. As these philosophers insisted, and as New's readings prove, art is where the experience of experience can be had: to read, as to write, a poem is to let the line guide one's way.

Hard Line traces the history of Republican Party foreign policy since World War II by focusing on the conservative leaders who shaped it. Colin Dueck closely examines the political careers and foreign-policy legacies of Robert Taft, Dwight Eisenhower, Barry Goldwater, Richard Nixon, Henry Kissinger, Ronald Reagan, George H. W. Bush, and George W. Bush. He shows how Republicans shifted away from isolationism in the years leading up to World War II and oscillated between realism and idealism during and after the cold war. Yet despite these changes, Dueck argues, conservative foreign policy has been characterized by a hawkish and intense American nationalism, and presidential leadership has been the driving force behind it. What does the future hold for Republican foreign policy? Hard Line demonstrates that the answer depends on who becomes the next Republican president. Dueck challenges the popular notion that Republican foreign policy today is beholden to economic interests or neoconservative intellectuals. He shows how Republican presidents have been granted remarkably wide leeway to define their party's foreign policy in the past, and how the future of conservative foreign policy will depend on whether the next Republican president exercises the prudence, pragmatism, and care needed to implement hawkish foreign policies skillfully and successfully. Hard Line reveals how most Republican presidents since World War II have done just that, and how their accomplishments can help guide future conservative presidents.

A comprehensive new theory of adelic line bundles on quasi-projective varieties over finitely generated fieldsThis book introduces a comprehensive theory of adelic line bundles on quasi-projective varieties over finitely generated fields, developed in both geometric and arithmetic contexts. In the geometric setting, adelic line bundles are defined as limits of line bundles on projective compactifications under the boundary topology. In the arithmetic setting, they are defined as limits of Hermitian line bundles on projective arithmetic compactifications, also under the boundary topology. After establishing these foundational definitions, the book uses the theory to explore key concepts such as intersection theory, effective sections, volumes, and positivity of adelic line bundles. It also applies these results to study height functions of algebraic points and prove an equidistribution theorem on quasi-projective varieties. This theory has broad applications in the study of numerical, dynamical, and Diophantine properties of moduli spaces, quasi-projective varieties, and varieties over finitely generated fields.

When his niece, a recovering heroin addict, falls in love with a local pot dealer, he is drawn into the underworld of crime, corruption, and drugs sweeping through his once quiet town. In the end, he is forced to go to unthinkable lengths to protect what he loves.

H. Rick Goff's gift for storytelling makes you feel as if you are right there in the boat with him. "A Line in the Water" is a delightful book filled with faith, family, friends, and fishing. A fun and light-hearted read, perfect for transporting you to several prime fishing destinations across the country where Goff, a former military officer in the United States Air Force, was stationed. Although I'm a novice when it comes to fishing, I found the heartwarming stories about Goff and his fishing buddies both comical and relatable. Particularly touching was the story of his friendship with his neighbor, and their adventures in Tampa Bay. Great book for all ages, filled with important life lessons along the way.The writer holds you captive as you venture with him chapter by chapter. It is the type of book you take on vacation to read and hope to never put down. It's amazing how Goff shares each and every experience literally "reeling in" the reader with his storytelling. The book is far more about the beauty of long-lasting friendships and how they shape your life coupled with the love of fishing. I would recommend it to young and old alike.

SomersetDorset Line from Above: Evercreech Junction to Bournemouth
The Somerset & Dorset is one of the most popular lines in Britain's railway history. Although it was one of the many uneconomic lines that closed following the Beeching report in the early 1960s it has a great appeal to railway enthusiasts today. Many remember the line as a route to holiday destinations, as it linked Bath and Bournemouth and provided connections to the Midland and London & South Western railways from Great Western territory, but it also provided a valuable service to local passengers and freight traffic. Although the Somerset & Dorset closed more than 40 years ago, the line has left traces in the landscape which are still visible today. The route is split into two volumes from Bath to Evercreech Junction and from Evercreech Junction to Bournemouth. This book shows the route through the medium of aerial photography from Evercreech Junction to Bournemouth and the branches to Burnham-on-Sea, Bridgwater and Wells, including well known landmarks of the railway that are still traceable today such as Templecombe shed, Shillingstone station, Spetisbury station and Pylle station. The stunning aerial photographs are supplemented by historical photographs of significant locations or structures along the line such as stations, tunnels, junctions and viaducts as well as maps showing sections of the line before closure.

This novel is entirely based on the factual events of September 28, 1974, and the leadup to it. The President of the Republic, General Ant nio de Sp nola, attempted to assume personal power over the emergent Portuguese democracy following the overthrow of fascism just the previous April. Of course, he was not acting alone in calling for multitudes of people to flood Lisbon, the capital city, on September 28 from all over the country (free transportation and tickets to the soccer game provided by the government ) with the demand to end parliamentary democracy and hand over extraordinary powers to a single military officer and put an end to "communism" and "anarchy." Behind him were the same powerful forces in politics, industry, agriculture, business, the financial sector, the media, and sectors tied to the colonial economy and to NATO that had backed the fascist state for almost fifty years. The Portuguese Communist Party, with its allies in the labor movement, organized massive brigades to nonviolently block the bridges and roadways leading into Lisbon.
