Ester Blenda Nordströms bok Patron Ann-Mari – Rackarungen blir bonde med efterord av Ylva Floreman. Ester Blenda Nordström var Sveriges första wallraffjournalist – och en av världens första, i alla fall långt före Günther Wallraff – när hon år 1914 utgav sig för att vara bondpiga och sökte jobb på en gård i Sörmland. Något som är extra intressant är att Ester Blendas Ann-Mari-böcker blev en stor inspirationskälla för Astrid Lindgren. Entangled temporalities in Mari raises the question of the close interweaving between field research and the construction of a historical object, one of the most famous city-states of the sumero-akkadian world. Working on this site, which has been severely damaged by the Syrian conflict, means unravelling the threads of a complex weave of field situations that turn the site into a veritable palimpsest. On a tell of more than 140 ha, the remains of three superimposed cities, as well as cemeteries, are intertwined. They have been partially cleared and left to erode, occasionally restored, then subjected to one of the most intense looting operations of the Syrian conflict. Untangling these threads means conducting an investigation that leads from the current situation in the field to a dual archaeology: that of the archives of the archaeological mission and its history, and that of a city conceived as an object of history, progressively constructed along the lines of stereotypes typical of archaeological Orientalism. After reconstructing this framework, we propose a dynamic vision of the evolution of a site and then of its monumental center, through a re-evaluation of the documentation as a whole.

The contributions gathered in this volume are the result of the German-French research project HIGEOMES - "The historical geography of Upper Mesopotamia in the 2nd millennium BC: Interdisciplinary research" (ANR/DFG). The first part, "From Aur to Mari," covers the Sinjar, Khabur and Taurus regions, that is, the north of Upper Mesopotamia. The focus lies on spatial phenomena of political structures in the first half of the 2nd millennium BC, based on written sources or archaeological findings (contributions by D. Charpin, M. Guichard, A. Jacquet, C. Nicolle, J.-M. Durand & N. Ziegler). The second part, "Beyond Upper Mesopotamia," considers regions at the borders or even outside of Upper Mesopotamia proper. The city of Akkade remains a point of reference, also in the second millennium. With regard to the ongoing discussion about the localization of the city of Akkade it seemed to make sense to bring the state of research concerning the written sources of the third to the first millennia up to date (contributions by W. Sommerfeld, N. Ziegler, S. Paulus, W. Pethe, L. Marti and R. Pirngruber). The two texts from Tell Sakka are here edited for the first time and analysed as to their importance for a reconstruction of Suppiluliuma I's military campaigns (contributions by F. Abdallah & J.-M. Durand, B. Alexandrov). The third part, "Toponymy and concept of space," consists of essays by I. Arkhipov, E. Cancik-Kirschbaum and N. Ziegler. They treat questions of newly attributed place-names and of the linguistic grasp of large areas and of central structures in Old Babylonian and Middle Assyrian times (libbi matim / libbi mati resp. libbi ali).

The Eucharistic Prayer is the most central and distinctive form of Christian public prayer apart from the Lord's Prayer itself. It gradually evolved into fixed forms during the early Christian centuries, and the Eucharistic Prayer of Addai and Mari is almost certainly the oldest such prayer still in regular use. Dr Gelston's study presents a critical edition of the medieval Syriac text of this ancient Eucharistic Prayer. The text, which is eclectic, is accompanied by a select critical apparatus and a translation, and is followed by textual notes on the variants in the apparatus. The detailed commentary, accessible to those who do not read Syriac, is concerned chiefly with literary-critical and historical questions such as the parallels with the Maronite anaphora Sharar which provide a particular opportunity to detect possible later accretions and modifications. A tentative reconstruction of the Prayer as it may have been at about the beginning of the fifth century is offered in an appendix, and an introduction sets the Prayer in its wider context.
