The Philosophical Merlin is an interesting early British effort at utilizing the fortune teller tradition (a number of 18th century systems of prognostication.) With some such texts claiming a Napoleonic origin, this particular work claims to be able to cast the general nativity of the user. This astrological sign they exist under according to the book supposedly governs their life and allows them to predict what affairs are best to delve into. An altogether dated but fascinating occult system.

Legend has it, that Merlin was enticed into a cave by an evil sorceress. She gave him wine and cast her magic spell sending him into the abyss of eternal slumber. She sealed off the cave, marking the end for poor old Merlin. That is until I came along...or rather Tom did It was the loud cry from the orphan boy that brought the wizard back to life. Merlin emerges into the 20th Century and discovers an alien land of denuded landscapes and frightening technology. He soon comes to terms with his situation and eventually befriends people from this extraordinary world. The imagery of that night manifested itself in a dream. He remembered now - the Sacred Staff presented to him by the High Priest of the Druid's Inner Circle. It was the ultimate privilege and losing possession of it was sacrilege. In the dream, his friend Alexinus has been transmuted into a Pt rosaure, a flying dinosaur by Niddrym, the sorceress. He tells Merlin she had stolen the Sacred Staff and that she still lives. Merlin is on a mission and with two newly acquired friends, a persistently curious female reporter and Tom, he ventures into an ancient world; a dangerous world - and that's where their frightening adventures begin...

Lord Peter Greniston's ProphecyWhen the stranger comes to the lion's gate And woods with Merlin's cry resound When Knobbly Hill doth tremble and shake Then must the treasure swiftly be found A throne, a crown, a speaking sword A golden lady, a silver lord Twelve true jewels to shine and meet Where gold springs from the ground Then Arthur from ancient sleep shall wake Deep in the greenstone mound And rise to battle for England's sake Summoned by a grail found Encircled by gold This is the time- Light set free for all mankind Yet, if no jewels be gathered there This have I seen in waking dream: Brightest light turns darkest night Nor leaf, nor creature, nor human face In this nor any other place - World's despair. When a wealthy client of Gwendolyn Fields, a Denver travel agent, cancels a trip to Far Tauverly, England, Gwen decides to take the trip herself, summoned by an insistent, yet illusive Call. Gwen quickly finds herself entering into a vast mystery that just may unlock secrets of the Court of King Arthur, and Merlin; while also revealing how the great heroes and legends of the past can re-enter our time. Like a heroine from one of the historical romance novels by Henrietta Amberly she is so fond of, Gwen finds passionate romance with Far Tauverly's own impossibly difficult, devastatingly attractive, Lord Greniston. Centuries-old secrets will be revealed, ancient rivalries reborn, and love tested.

The discovery of seven manuscript fragments of the Old French Suite Vulgate du Merlin in a set of early printed books in the Bristol Central Library hit global headlines in 2019. This book contains a comprehensive study and accompanying transliteration of these fascinating Arthurian fragments. Beginning with an extensive contextual history, the authors reveal details of the fragments' origin, their importation to England, and their subsequent journey to a waste pile in a bookbinder's workshop, where they would be incorporated into the bindings of a four-volume edition of the works of Jean Gerson in the early sixteenth century. A full enquiry into the provenance of these host volumes sets out the possible routes from the bookbinder's workshop to their final home in Bristol Central Library. Using multi-spectral imaging to read the damaged sections of text, the authors also provide a full edition of the narrative contained in the fragments.
