M. John-Patrick O’Connor proposes that — in contrast to recent contemporary scholarship that rarely focuses on the ethical implications of discipleship and Christology — Mark’s Gospel, as our earliest life of Jesus, presents a theological description of the moral life.Arguing for Mark’s ethical validity in comparison to Matthew and Luke, O’Connor begins with an analysis of the moral environment of ancient biographies, exploring what types of Jewish and Greco-Romanic conceptions of morality found their way into Hellenistic biographies. Turning to the Gospel’s own examples of morality, O’Connor examines moral accountability according to Mark, including moral reasoning, the nature of a world in conflict, and accountability in both God’s family and to God’s authority. He then turns to images of the accountable self, including an analysis of virtues and virtuous practices within the Gospel. O’Connor concludes with the personification of evil, human responsibility, punitive consequences, and evil’s role in Mark’s moral landscape.

To My Dearest Wife, Lide

A personal account of Commodore Perry's landmark expedition to Japan and life in the antebellum navy. George B. Gideon Jr. served as second assistant engineer aboard the USS Powhatan from 1852 to 1856. From his position on the steam frigate, Gideon traveled to Singapore, Labuan, Borneo, Hong Kong, and many other Asian lands. During his time at sea, Gideon penned dozens of letters to his wife, Lide, back home in Philadelphia. Recently discovered in the attic of his great-great-grandniece, were fifty-one letters penned by Gideon providing thorough and insightful commentary throughout the voyage. Through these correspondences, Gideon laboriously documents the details of his daily life on board, from the food they ate to the technical aspects of his work, as well as observations concerning the historical events unfolding around him, such as Chinese piracy, the Taiping Rebellion, the Crimean War, and the devastation of Shimoda. To My Dearest Wife, Lide: Letters from George B. Gideon Jr. during Commodore Perry's Expedition to Japan, 1853–1855 is a rare first-person account of the landmark American naval expedition to Japan to establish commercial relations between the two countries. Gideon's letters have been meticulously transcribed and annotated by the editors and are an invaluable primary historical source. Gideon's letters are candid and revealing, delving into the rampant dysfunction in the navy of the 1850s—sickness and disease, alcohol abuse, and poor leadership, among other challenges. Gideon also unabashedly shares his own cynical views of the navy's role in supporting American economic interests in Japan. This firsthand account of the political mission of the Perry expedition is a unique contribution to naval and military history and gives readers a better view of life aboard a navy ship.
To contemporary sensibilities, the idea of divine judgment can seem at best off-putting, at worst a reason to jettison the biblical text altogether. Long gone are the days of Puritan preachers and their fiery, turn-or-burn tirades--but should preachers and teachers wholly avoid the topic of divine judgment? In the words of Dostoyevsky's character Ivan in The Brothers Karamazov, "What good can hell do, since those children have already been tortured?" Or, as Mary Ann Tolbert asks, "What happens when the text is read, not by the marginalized but by the oppressor, not by the colonized, but by the colonizer?"Rather than continue to neglect the theme of God's judgment for a modern world, M. John-Patrick O'Connor suggests that Christian communities ought to improve upon their "grammar of judgment" by judiciously evaluating the "who," the "what," and the "why" of God's judgment and by considering the historic use and abuse of such language. O'Connor's journey toward better theologies of judgment begins with the Gospel of Mark. While readers of Scripture most frequently associate divine judgment in the New Testament with Matthew, Luke, or Paul, The Last Will Be First claims that Mark's Gospel offers an equally robust vision of God's judgment upon evil and, crucially, God's justice for the "least of these."After cataloguing the range of divine judgment language in the Hebrew Bible and Second Temple Judaism, O'Connor turns to the second Gospel, proposing that God's judgment as portrayed in Mark is for the purpose of defending God's children. O'Connor demonstrates that Mark participates in a well-established "grammar of judgment" that can be dispensed in a variety of contexts while retaining God's role as the primary agent of judgment. To that end, this book also hopes to build a constructive theology of judgment for readers of Mark, with a hopeful vision for the gospel's ongoing relevance in a world still marked by oppression.

Down & Dirty: Archaeology of the South Carolina Lowcountry

With this clever new look at Lowcountry history M. Patrick Hendrix demystifies archaeology and takes readers on a fast-paced romp through more than 50,000 years. Drawing on the results of archaeological studies at a wide variety of sites, Hendrix discusses key finds and sets them in context with an accessible, entertaining style. The discovery of a mineralized mastodon bone from Edisto Island offers a glimpse into the Paleoindian period; the brick and earthen fortifications that protected Colonial Charleston make clear how vulnerable early Colonists felt. Slave cabins, "colonoware" pottery, and the remains of foods found on the Lynch Plantation in Christ Church Parish demonstrate the continuation of West African customs that was seen on many early rice plantations; ceramics found at the Miles Brewton house illustrate the extreme wealth enjoyed by some eighteenth-century Charlestonians. Early work on the H.L.Hunley indicated immediately the technological sophistication of the vessel; recent work on Morris Island underscores the tremendous historic significance of this barrier island and has contributed to recognition that it should be protected. With a missionary zeal to preserve the integrity of sites during the explosive growth of the twenty-first century, Hendrix is sure to inspire in readers his conviction that knowledge of our past illuminates our future.
A History of Fort Sumter: Building a Civil War Landmark

In 1829, construction began on a fort atop a rock formation in the mouth of Charleston Harbor. Decades later, Fort Sumter was near completion on December 26, 1860, when Major Robert Anderson occupied it in response to the growing hostilities between the North and South. As a symbol of sedition for the North and holy ground for the South, possession of Fort Sumter was deemed essential to both sides when the Civil War began. By 1864, the fort, heavily bombarded by Union artillery, was a shapeless mass of ruins, mostly bermed rubble and sand with a garrison of Confederate soldiers holding its ground. Join author M. Patrick Hendrix as he follows the tumultuous lives of the men who fought to control what later became one of the most revered monuments to the war.
