This book presents the theory of non-equilibrium thermodynamics in a pedagogical and practical way that targets engineering applications. In it, tools to take advantage of the second as well as the first law of thermodynamics are provided.The book starts by explaining how the entropy production is the cornerstone of non-equilibrium thermodynamics — the basis to describe coupled transport phenomena, which are highly relevant for several renewable energy technologies. The book also uses entropy production as the foundation for a systematic methodology to analyze and improve energy efficiency, and shows how entropy production can be used to test the consistency of transport models. The link between transport theory and energy efficiency is also shown, and the relationship to exergy analysis is demonstrated. The purpose of this book is to encourage the use of non-equilibrium thermodynamics to describe transport in complex, heterogeneous media. With large coupling effects between the transport of heat, mass, charge and chemical reactions at surfaces, it is important to know how one should properly integrate across systems where different phases are in contact. No other book gives a prescription of how to set up flux equations for transports across heterogeneous systems.The authors apply the thermodynamic description in terms of excess densities, developed by Gibbs for equilibrium, to non-equilibrium systems. The treatment is restricted to transport into and through the surface. Using local equilibrium together with the balance equations for the surface, expressions for the excess entropy production of the surface and of the contact line are derived. Many examples are given to illustrate how the theory can be applied to coupled transport of mass, heat, charge and chemical reactions; in phase transitions, at electrode surfaces and in fuel cells. Molecular simulations and analytical studies are used to add insight.

The ancient city of Palmyra, which today lies in the desert of modern Syria, was once a flourishing city of trade. During the Roman era, when Palmyra was at the height of its powers, several hundred funerary monuments were constructed in the city, and within these, portraits of Palmyra's inhabitants were once displayed. These representations of men, women, and children from the Roman Imperial period form the largest body of portraiture known outside of Rome itself, and their study is essential to our understanding of how funerary portraiture in the Roman provinces was used as a mechanism to shape and express identity. This volume offers a study and catalogue of the funerary portraits of Palmyrene women from the first century BC to the third century AD. It explores both the visual qualities of the portraits themselves, and the complexities of the space in which they were originally situated. By analysing the civic and religious activities of women within Palmyra, this book also situates these portraits in a broader context. Through this approach, the work thus addresses key questions concerning the characteristics of Palmyrene female portraits and what this indicates about the nature of female identity in Roman Palmyra, how the portrayals of women changed over time, and what might have caused such changes.

Skatteretten betragtes ofte som et tørt og teknisk felt, der skal anvendes praktisk uden plads til filosofisk eller videnskabsteoretisk refleksion. Dansk skatteretlig forskning fra 1999 til 2024 har primært fokuseret på, hvad der kan beskattes, men skatteretten rejser fundamentale spørgsmål om retfærdighed og magt i forholdet mellem stat og skatteydere. Spørgsmål såsom, hvordan skatteretten virker, hvem den tjener og med hvilke konsekvenser, fortjener derfor at blive undersøgt. Drevet af videnskabelig nysgerrighed og ønsket om at styrke skatteret som forskningsfelt, udfordrer bogen den gængse opfattelse af skatteret. Den foretager en kritisk videnskabsteoretisk analyse af den dominerende skatteretlige forskningsramme, inspireret af Kuhns paradigmeteori og Latours modernitetsfilosofi, og viser, hvordan denne ramme har begrænset forståelsen af skatterettens funktion i samfundet. The Pottery and Terracotta Lamps is the first comprehensive study of previously unpublished ceramic finds from the Artemis Laphria sanctuary in Kalydon, Aitolia, excavated in the 1920s and 1930s by Frederik Poulsen, Konstantinos Rhomaios, and Ejnar Dyggve. While the sanctuary’s architecture and topography were published in 1948, the extensive ceramic assemblages dating from the Prehistoric to Late Antique periods remained unpublished until now. This volume is an invaluable resource for scholars interested in the history of Aitolia, ancient Greek religion, and ancient ceramics. The book presents an assemblage of prominent Mycenaean pottery as well as unique locally produced pottery, such as a rhyton with an exceptional figure scene, and imported ceramics from Corinth, Attica, and Elis, demonstrating the city's long history of external contacts. Furthermore, the book provides extensive analyses of pottery types and shape distributions, as well as a detailed account of the excavation history and contextualisation of the pottery assemblage.

After analysing relevant provisions in the UN Convention on the Law of the Sea and the Commission’s Rules of Procedure compared with the practice of States and the Commission, Busch raises the overall question if the possibility for other States to block the work of the Commission may in fact be undermining the mandate and functions of the Commission.
