Vi får i en kronologisk berättelse, från tidigt 1800-tal och fram till i dag, möta fem kvinnor - Carin Ersdotter på 1830-talet, hennes släktingar Karin, Anna och Frida Henriksson i början av 1900-talet, och så författaren själv, alla hade eller har de band till Gamla stan i Stockholm, men också till samma trakt i Dalarna, Djurabygden i södra Leksand, och till varandra. Det är också en berättelse om platsens, Gamla stans, förändring under tvåhundra år, om förändringar i kvinnors livsvillkor, och om dalfolkets förändrade relationer till Stockholm, och det så kallade herrarbetet. Med utgångspunkt i den berättade historien diskuterar författaren de enskilda kvinnornas liv, sätter in dem i ett större sammanhang, jämför dem med varandra, och reflekterar kring några av de större samhällsförändringar som kvinnornas livsberättelser speglar. Boken vill visa på värdet av den metod som kallas mikrohistoria, som innebär att man försöker komma nära enskilda människor i historien och genom detaljerade studier av olika källor rekonstruera och förstå hur dessa har tänkt och agerat inom sin samtids sociala och kulturella kontext. Det är en berättelse om förbindelser i tid och rum. Förbindelser mellan människor och mellan människor och platser. Släktförbindelser men också starka känslomässiga förbindelser. Men framför allt förbindelser mellan den lilla historien och den stora. Anna Götlind är professor i historia vid Stockholms universitet, med särskilt intresse för mikrohistoria.
