G. K. Chesterton

Stephen R. L. Clark

In this book, Stephen R. L. Clark, a philosopher with a lifelong "addiction" to science fiction, explores G. K. Chesterton's ideas and arguments in their historical context and evaluates them philosophically. He addresses Chesterton's sense that the way things are is not how they must have been or need be in the future and his willingness to face up to the apparent effects of the nihilism he detected in the science and politics of his day. Clark offers a detailed study of some of Chesterton's works that have been identified by science fiction writers and critics as seminal influences. He attempts to deal with some of Chesterton's theories that have been found offensive or "positively wicked" by later writers and critics, including his arguments against female suffrage and in praise of war, his medievalist leanings, and his contemptuous rejection of the Darwinian evolutionary theory.

G. H. Hovagimyan is an absurdist, a strategist, a serial collaborator, and nothing short of a cultural icon in the world of contemporary art, particularly as it relates to how artists have adopted the digital technological tools of our times, adapting them in his work for critique of art, popular culture, and social engagement. Situationist Funhouse is a joyride through this history. The journey Stephen Zacks so meticulously documents and describes is not only an incredibly comprehensive ride through G. H.’s life work to date - Hovagimyan adopted G. H. as an acronym in the 1990s as a kind of gesture of personal rebirth and to ease others’ difficulty with his last name [pronounced ho-va-GIM-yan] - it also serves as a document that tracks a particular view on the alternative contemporary art scene of New York from the 1970s to the present day.

A fascinating and eclectic anthology of writings from diverse times, places, and cultures - from ancient Rome and China to present-day America - spanning many genres, including short fiction, essays, poetry, letters, and history. And the authors all share one trait: their initials are "S.G." An anthology must have a theme. So what happens when the theme is essentially meaningless? The anthology becomes a game to play, and a puzzle to solve. A scavenger hunt and jigsaw puzzle, with the pieces scattered all over the world, and the final picture unknown until it is finished. An adventure of discovery for both the anthologist and the reader. These are all short works, or short excerpts from longer works, compiled and edited by Sean Gleeson, with a brief introduction to each piece. Here are some of the great reads you'll discover: The incredible Stephen Glass story "Hack Heaven" as seen in the movie Shattered Glass. The scandalous article that destroyed Glass's career, and marked the ascendancy of online journalism. The funny short story "Freckles M'Grath" by Susan Glaspell. "Why You Can't Have Saint Paul's Head," an actual letter written in 594 A.D. from Saint Gregory to Empress Constantina explaining, well, why she can't have Saint Paul's head. "No More unto My Thoughts Appear" by Cavalier poet Sidney Godolphin. "Penmanship Wisdom" by Sun Guoting, excerpted from his preface to his Treatise on Calligraphy. The famous essay "What Does Labor Want?" by Samuel Gompers, founder of the American Federation of Labor. "Deeds of Erik Shrewd-Spoken" by Saxo Grammaticus, entertaining tales of a crafty hero excerpted from Volume Five of his Deeds of the Danes. "Hotel and Tea-House Girls of Japan" by Sidney Gulick, excerpted from his book Working Women of Japan. The science fiction short story "Breakaway" by Stanley Gimble. "The Camel and the Thief" by Sarath Ghosh, a detective story excerpted from his book The Wonders of the Jungle. "Leo Learns His Lesson" by Sean Gleeson, in which a man wishes for a world without beer. This is a quality print edition, with great care taken to ensure a gorgeous and error-free book.

Memories of My Youth in National Socialist Germany: Introduction by Stephen Mitford Goodson

In Mein Kampf Adolf Hitler criticised the then existing educational system for placing excessive emphasis on the accumulation of useless knowledge, most of which is soon forgotten. Instead he advocated curtailment of the scholastic programme and the employment of the extra hours, made available, in physical training and the development of character, self-confidence, willpower and a sense of civic responsibility. More advanced teaching in the sciences, for example, would be provided for those who wished to specialise in such subjects, while in the teaching of history the race problem would occupy a dominant position. In Hitler's view the ultimate purpose of such an education would be to inculcate in the youth a racial instinct, the understanding of the racial ideal and the National Socialist Weltanschauung. Such an education would ensure the preservation of the German race and future cultural progress. On 20 April 1934 this vision of Hitler became a reality with the establishment of the first Nationalpolitische Erziehungsanstalten or Napola schools. In this rare memoir the reader will find a first-hand account of life in two Napola schools, as experienced by Fleming, Dirk van de Walle. Also related are his military training in the Waffen SS and his subsequent capture and internment in American prisoner of war camps.

P.G. Wodehouse saw his first article published when still at school, and went on to become the leading humour writer of the twentieth century. He created characters famous across the English-speaking world, such as Rupert Psmith, Stanley Ukridge, Uncle Fred, the inhabitants of the Drones Club, Bertie Wooster and Jeeves, and Lord Emsworth and his beloved Empress, all of whom remain as popular today as they were when they first appeared all those years ago. But behind all the brilliant metaphors that make us laugh out loud, there is a surprising background of reality. Wodehouse didn’t create his stories from scratch; he used real settings and exaggerated the characteristics of people he knew. With examples of Wodehouse’s unique imagery, the P.G. Wodehouse Miscellany follows the development and progress of his legendary characters, tells us where Wodehouse got his ideas from and demonstrates why his admirers included Bertrand Russell, Berthold Brecht, George Orwell, Rudyard Kipling and the Kaiser. This informative little miscellany will be a must for all fans of P.G. Wodehouse.
