Steven D. Lavine. Failure is What It's All About
Walt Disney's vision for an art school located before the gates of Los Angeles became a reality: Opened 50 years ago, the California Institute of the Arts had long been in crisis, before Steven D. Lavine led it to financial prosperity and international acclaim. Today, CalArts is the cradle of many Academy Award and Pulitzer Prize winners, of Mellon and Guggenheim Fellows – a hotspot of American creativity. In personal conversations with Jörn Jacob Rohwer, Lavine tells his life story for the first time, talking about cultural politics, philanthropy, the avant-garde and Los Angeles at the centre of his life. Spurred on by self-doubts and a desire to learn from failure, he proves to be a sensitive thinker, visionary and transatlantic mediator between the worlds of art, politics and education.

Steven Shearer - Working from Life
Steven Shearer (b. New Westminster, BC, 1968; lives and works in Vancouver) works in a range of media including printmaking, sculpture, painting, drawing, and collages of found photographs. His portraits of individuals in decorated settings earned Shearer international acclaim. They show heroes from the past-- protagonists of musical subcultures or the history of art. The archetypal creative minds in their studios appear together with their works; the interiors surrounding them reflect their psychological constitution. Shearer paints them in the style of Symbolism, the German Romantics, or the Fauves. Imitating the perspective painting of the Renaissance, he virtually pulls the beholder into his pictures. Steven Shearer participated in the Nova Scotia College of Art and Design New York Summer Studio Programme in 1992 and studied at the Emily Carr College of Art, Vancouver, in 1992. In 2011, he represented Canada at the 54th Venice Biennale.
Steven Thackston: Flowers in a Thorn Tree
Flowers in a Thorn Tree is the story of wildlife conservation in Northern Kenya. Over three years, Thackston made several trips to Kenya, whereupon he would imbed with ranger units of the Northern Rangelands Trust. They’re known as the Warriors for Peace and Wildlife. He lived off a troop-carrier. He would patrol, eat and sleep with the rangers, photographing them as they chased poachers, murderers, and as they worked within the pastoral communities. In this regard, the book is very much an “On the Road,” book. The aim of the photographer is to show and let the pictures tell, in a nonlinear and organic manner. NRT rangers work both on and off of their respective conservancies (there are 5 ranger groups, the 9-1 through the 9-5 sprinkled throughout northern Kenya.) Amongst the pastoral peoples, they have contacts who tell them about the movements of animal herds and potential poaching rings. They also work as peacekeepers within these communities with the idea that a happy and stable community is less likely to feel the need to poach an endangered animal. The mission to change the hearts and minds of the pastoral people regarding the treatment of endangered animals, is instilled within the ranks of the ranger units. The elephants and rhinos that appear in this book are all rescue animals or live on conservancies. They would probably not be alive without the efforts of men, particularly the rangers who populate my book. The rangers believe in their work. This group of humble men have one of the most important jobs in the world and they are succeeding. That’s good for you and me and our families.
Steven J. Taylor: Blue Man Living in a Red World
A tribute to the influence of one of the "intellectual forbearers" of Disability Studies in Education (DSE), this collection of six essays honors the scholar and activist Steven J. Taylor. The Centennial Professor of Disability Studies, and director of the Center on Human Policy at the Syracuse University School of Education was recognized internationally for his enduring commitment to disability policy, advocacy, and the meaningful inclusion of people with disabilities throughout society. His research, teaching, and scholarship shaped our understanding of disability through a sociological lens honed over decades of enquiry that trace back from his early work on deinstitutionalization and to the present disability trends and controversies. Taylor made clear how we socially construct humanness, belonging, community, and care in much the same way we construct deviance and stigma. Steven J. Taylor: Blue man Living in a Red World provides insight into the theoretical grounding that has fueled DSE research and scholarship for decades. You will also find opportunities for personal reflection about how one might find Taylor's work intrinsic to current efforts to challenge the persistent segregation and mistreatment of people labeled with intellectual or developmental disabilities. As the third volume in this series that is devoted to unraveling and better understanding the evolution of thought among those recognized as the early voices and critical leaders who laid the foundation for disability studies in education, the contributors to this text reexamine the impact of Taylor's scholarship on their own thinking, teaching, academic and civic activities. These essays will help you discover that Taylor continues his mentorship of those who ascribe to DSE tenets and more importantly, encourages each of us to use our positions to influence the next generation of disability activists and scholars. Contributors are: Julie Allan, Jennifer Randhare Ashton, Elisabeth De Schauwer, Cheryl M. Jorgensen, Nancy Rice, Janet Story Sauer, Ashley Taylor, Geert Van Hove and Linda Ware.

Steven Weinberg (1933-2021) was a theoretical physicist and Nobel laureate who contributed tremendously to particle physics. Until his death, Weinberg was regarded by many as the greatest living scientist. His most well-known work was the formulation of electroweak theory for which he earned the 1979 Nobel Prize with Sheldon Glashow and Abdus Salam, but his research spanned many other fields. Examples include effective Lagrangians, quantum chromodynamics, supersymmetry, quantum gravity, and cosmology.Weinberg's publications were renowned not only for their profundity and originality but also for their devastating logic and clarity. This volume brings together 37 of his most significant papers, together with commentaries, providing today's physicists with easy access to these seminal papers. More than just a collection, this selection by editor Michael Duff places each article into a comprehensive overview, providing the reader with the scientific and historical context of Weinberg's finest papers.
