Susan Glaspell's Century of American Women

Susan Glaspell's Century of American Women

Veronica Makowsky

Oxford University Press Inc
1993
sidottu
As a female writer in the shadow of the cultural nimbus generated by her male peers, and as a transcendentalist in the spirit of Emerson among modernists, Susan Glaspell has suffered from literary obscurity from the start. An accomplished playwright, and co-founder of the Provincetown Players, Glaspell created self-reliant female heroines in works which were often dismissed as "experimental" by her colleagues. Makowsky's engagingly written study, by focusing on the women of Glaspell's writing and their struggles with the issues of motherhood and social limitation, seeks to vindicate Susan Glaspell and to offer her work to the attention of a new generation of readers. At the same time, Makowsky offers a valuable and topical inquiry into the nature of the cultural and political forces that shape our perceptions of literary "greatness" and, ultimately, the canon.

The Sylloge of Coins of the British Isles aims to publish fully illustrated catalogues of British and Irish coins found in collections both at home and abroad, ranging from Ancient British issues to the seventeenth century, but covering Anglo-Saxon coinage in greatest detail. This Cumulative Index shows at a glance the vast range of material available in Volumes 21-40 of the Sylloge. In analysing the coin-legends by personal names (mainly moneyers but also rulers) and mints, and tabulating reigns, types, and find-spots, this volume brings in a great deal of new material. Especially important are the large corpora of tenth-century material from the British Museum, and the eleventh-century Danish dynasty coins from Stockholm. Of the previous index volume, covering the first 20 Sylloge volumes, Fran Colman wrote: That this corpus is made so accessible by the layout and content of the Index will be of immediate value to the student of philology, for it gives ready access to a body of material, viz, personal and place-names on coins, which has long been recognised as vital to the study of language variation in the history of English, but which up till now has not been available in such complete form. Nomina . Either as an independent source-book or as a key to the series, this volume will prove invaluable. This book is intended for numismatic scholars and collectors, Medieval historians, Old English/Old Norse philologists.
Slow Harms and Citizen Action

Slow Harms and Citizen Action

Environmental degradation is not new, yet the impact of pollution on human health and wellbeing is growing. According to the World Health Organization, 12.6 million people die annually from living or working near toxic pollution, amounting to one-quarter of global deaths. Ninety-two percent of these deaths occur in middle or low-income countries, where the majority of the global population lives. For the millions of communities around the world where pollution is a slow moving, long-standing problem, residents born into toxic exposure often perceive pollution as part of the everyday landscape, particularly in low-resource settings. Local communities may also be both victims of pollution and complicit in perpetrating it themselves. When and how do people mobilize around slow harms? Moreover, when does citizen action around slow harms unlock policy action? In Slow Harms and Citizen Action, Veronica Herrera chronicles the struggle against toxic exposure in urban Latin America. Comparing advocacy movements for river pollution remediation in the capital regions of Argentina, Colombia, and Peru, Herrera explains how citizen-led efforts helped create environmental governance through networks that included impacted communities (bonding mobilization) and resourced allies (bridging mobilization). Through bonding and bridging mobilization, citizen advocacy for slow harms activated the state's regulatory capacity. Moreover, Herrera illustrates how the most successful environmental movements occurred in settings where established human rights movements had previously helped dismantle state-sponsored militarized violence. By unpacking human rights movements as thoroughfares for environmental activism, Slow Harms and Citizen Action sheds new light on the struggles for environmental justice in Latin America.

The English Church and the Continent in the Tenth and Eleventh Centuries
This is the first comprehensive study of the connections between the English and Continental churches during the tenth and eleventh centuries. Veronica Ortenberg draws on the whole range of narrative, liturgical, art-historical, and documentary sources to establish the strong and continuing links between England and the countries of Christian Europe in culture, spirituality, and art. Her analysis of the various areas of contact - France, Flanders, the German lands, Italy, Byzantium, and the Holy Land - highlights the central place of the English church in early medieval christendom. Dr Ortenberg's work places the later Anglo-Saxon church exactly where it saw itself belonging: in the mainstream of European culture. Handsomely illustrated with thirty-one carefully chosen plates, this is a work of wide-ranging scholarship, which deepens our understanding of medieval culture and religion.
Rome, Ravenna, and Venice, 750-1000

Rome, Ravenna, and Venice, 750-1000

Veronica West-Harling

The richest and most politically complex regions in Italy in the earliest middle ages were the Byzantine sections of the peninsula, thanks to their links with the most coherent early medieval state, the Byzantine empire. This comparative study of the histories of Rome, Ravenna, and Venice examines their common Byzantine past, since all three escaped incorporation into the Lombard kingdom in the late 7th and early 8th centuries. By 750, however, Rome and Ravenna's political links with the Byzantine Empire had been irrevocably severed. Thus, did these cities remain socially and culturally heirs of Byzantium? How did their political structures, social organisation, material culture, and identities change? Did they become part of the Western political and ideological framework of Italy? This study identifies and analyses the ways in which each of these cities preserved the structures of the Late Antique social and cultural world; or in which they adapted each and every element available to them to their own needs, at various times and in various ways, to create a new identity based partly on their Roman heritage and partly on their growing integration with the rest of medieval Italy. It tells a story which encompasses the main contemporary narratives, documentary evidence, recent archaeological discoveries, and discussions on art history; it follows the markers of status and identity through titles, names, ethnic groups, liturgy and ritual, foundation myths, representations, symbols, and topographies of power to shed light on a relatively little known area of early medieval Italian history.
Responsibility for Negligence in Ethics and Law

Responsibility for Negligence in Ethics and Law

Verónica Rodríguez-Blanco

Oxford University Press

sidottu
Negligent or inadvertent action in both law and ethics is a matter of agency. The pre-theoretical and philosophical views agree that we are responsible for things that we do intentionally, but it is less clear whether we are responsible for inadvertent or negligent actions. The law of negligence in tort law attributes responsibility for inadvertent acts, while in ethics there is deep and serious scepticism about the responsibility for negligent or inadvertent action. How can we be responsible for things that happen beyond the realm of our knowledge or control? Positioned at the intersection of law and ethics, Responsibility for Negligence in Ethics and Law: Aspiration, Perspective and Civic Maturity responds to these fundamental questions by advancing the idea that the underpinning feature of negligent or inadvertent acts is the phenomenon of akrasia - the lack of integration of character and intelligent thinking. When we act akratically, we are acting contrary to our deliberated intention, due to an uneven development of character and thoughts about what is right, dutiful, and good. Using an Aristotelian-inspired model of deliberation, the book illustrates how legal decisions in negligence invite citizens to adopt a deliberative-aspirational perspective. This perspective encourages them to reshape, redescribe, and rethink their duties of care to meet the aspirational standard of the reasonable person. Consequently, the book argues that the purpose of negligence law is to promote values of citizen engagement and civic maturity. Combining tort law theory, Aristotelian conceptions of deliberation, and theories of practical rationality, responsibility, and action, this book invites us to rethink private law's purpose and methodology.
The Arrest of Ships in Private International Law

The Arrest of Ships in Private International Law

Verónica Ruiz Abou-Nigm

Oxford University Press

sidottu
By providing a private international law analysis of a field in which international conventions coexist with national law and regional law, this book offers different theoretical and methodological insights into the conflict of laws and the conflict of jurisdictions, aiming ultimately at the juridical continuity of legal relations across national borders. Central to the book is the jurisdictional function of arrest of ships. Forum arresti--the paradigmatic forum selection criterion in English and Scots law--has survived so far as a specific jurisdictional basis for maritime claims in the process of Europeanization of private international law. One of the main purposes of this book is to provide a theoretical framework within which forum arresti in the case of the arrest of ships gains legitimacy. It proposes a positive approach to jurisdictional issues through the lenses of international judicial co-operation and provides a theoretical justification for the triumph of forum arresti in the international maritime context where traditionally this has been justified by historical and practical reasons. Considering the the topic in the context of the Europeanization of private international law and the Brussels I Regulation, this book includes valuable insight into theories of characterisation as applied to uniform provisions such as the International Arrest Conventions, and challenges the indistinctive characterisation of the arrest of ships as an inherent part of the action in rem in English law. This is a scholarly analysis offering an expert perspective on the arrest of ships in the international commercial sphere to draw conclusions on the advancement of further harmonisation in this field. Through its focus on English and Scots law in the light of international conventions, this book provides a framework which will give practical answers to the many complex private international law issues that arise in relation to the arrest of ships.

Veronica Franco

Veronica Franco was a 16th-century Venetian beauty, poet, and protofeminist. This collection presents the eroticism and eloquence that set her apart from the chaste, silent woman prescribed by Renaissance gender ideology. As an "honored courtesan", Franco made her living by arranging to have sexual relations, for a high fee, with the elite of Venice and the many travellers - merchants, ambassadors, even kings - who passed through the city. Courtesans needed to be beautiful, sophisticated in their dress and manners, and elegant, cultivated conversationalists. Exempt from many of the social and educational restrictions placed on women of the Venetian patrician class, Franco used her position to recast "virtue" as "intellectual integrity," offering wit and refinement in return for patronage and a place in public life. Franco became a writer by allying herself with distinguished men at the centre of her city's culture, particularly in the informal meetings of a literary salon at the home of Domenico Venier, the oldest member of a noble family and a former Venetian senator. Through Venier's protection and her own determination, Franco published work in which she defended her fellow courtesans, speaking out against their mistreatment by men and criticizing the subordination of women in general. Venier also provided literary counsel when she responded to insulting attacks written by the male Venetian poet Maffio Venier. Franco's insight into the power conflicts between men and women and her awareness of the threat she posed to her male contemporaries make her life and work pertinent today.

The term mantle has inspired philosophers, geographers, and theologians, and shaped artists' and mapmakers' visual vocabularies for thousands of years. According to Veronica della Dora, mantle is the "metaphor par excellence, for it unfolds between the seen and the unseen as a threshold and as a point of tension." Featuring numerous illustrations, The Mantle of the Earth: Genealogies of a Geographical Metaphor is an intellectual history of the term mantle and its metaphorical representation in art and literature, geography and cartography. Through the history of this metaphor from antiquity to the modern day, we learn about shifting perceptions and representations of global space and of the nature of geography itself.

Studies of "Classic Hollywood" typically treat Hollywood films released from 1930 to 1960 as a single interpretive mass. Veronica Pravadelli complicates this idea. Focusing on dominant tendencies in box office hits and Oscar-recognized classics, she breaks down the so-called classic period into six distinct phases that follow Hollywood's amazingly diverse offerings from the emancipated females of the "Transition Era" and the traditional men and women of the conservative 1930s that replaced it to the fantastical Fifties movie musicals that arose after anti-classic genres like film noir and women's films. Pravadelli sets her analysis apart by paying particular attention to the gendered desires and identities exemplified in the films. Availing herself of the significant advances in film theory and modernity studies that have taken place since similar surveys first saw publication, she views Hollywood through strategies as varied as close textural analysis, feminism, psychoanalysis, film style and study of cinematic imagery, revealing the inconsistencies and antithetical traits lurking beneath Classic Hollywood's supposed transparency.
