A wholly new kind of coming-of-age story about lust, punishment, artistic drive and desires that defy the hard-won boundaries of the self'Deeply empathetic and horny' CARMEN MARIA MACHADO'Will quietly engulf you in flames' LING MA'So incredibly hot' RACHEL YODER'Hypnotic, sexy, smart' MELISSA FEBOSWhen she first meets the choreographer at an artists' residency, they don't hit it off. She finds him loud, conceited, domineering. He thinks her serious, guarded, too precious about her work. But when he invites her to watch his dance company perform, something shifts.Their interaction at the show sets off a summer of expanding sexual boundaries. Over weekends sequestered at his summer house in upstate New York, her body learns to obediently follow his, and his desires quickly become inextricable from her pleasure - and her pain. Back in Boston, her roommate's concern amplifies her own doubts about these heady weekend retreats. What does it mean for a young, queer woman to be with an older man? For a fledgling artist to attach herself to an established one? Is she following her own agency, or is she merely following him? And does falling in love have to mean eviscerating yourself?
The Elephant In The Room - A Poet's Journal VII
In many ways we all struggle with the need to be heard. Come 2018, my poetry's one of those ways for people to hear me out. It's a way to make sure I'm making sense of everything. A way to hear myself. Society and politics haven't changed. However, my views on public scrutiny, and ostracization, have. Your mental health, your sanity, is harder to keep now than ever. It's as if you have to walk on eggshells with your words. The fear of offending someone gets greater every day. This year, part of me let this fear go. I said what I needed to say, in a hopefully non-offensive way. So I keep talking (writing) in hopes that someone may hear (read) something that helps. These journals are a way for you to hear what's said to myself in my head. An example of how I cope with my illness. My hopeful path to better self-esteem, confidence, break-downs, and build-ups. I hope you enjoy the journey!

The Social Fabric of Fifteenth-Century Florence
The Arte dei rigattieri (merchants of second-hand goods in Florence) has never been ??the subject of a systematic study, even in scholarship devoted to the history of trades. Underpinned by a large collection of archival material, this book analyzes the social life and economic activity of rigattieri in fifteenth-century Florence. It offers invaluable information on issues such as the relationship between socio-political affiliations and economic interest as well as the structures of consumption and the spending power of different social groups. Furthermore, through the lens of the Arte dei Rigattieri, this work examines the connection between the development of the political bureaucracy, the establishment of Medicean power, and contemporaneous processes of identity construction and social mobility.
Deindustrialization and Casinos

Deindustrialization and Casinos

As governments increasingly legalize and expand the availability of casinos, hoping to offset the impacts of manufacturing decline through the advancement of gambling commerce, this book examines what casinos do—and do not do—for host communities in terms of economic growth. Examining the case generally made by those seeking to establish casino developments—that they offer benefits for the "public good"—the author draws on a case study of Canada’s automotive capital (Windsor, Ontario), which was a pilot site for potential further casino development in the region. The author asks whether casinos do, in fact, offer good jobs, revenue generation, and economic diversification. A study of the benefits of casino developments that considers the question of whether they constitute a ready answer to the problems of industrial and economic decline, this volume will appeal to scholars of sociology and urban studies, with interests in the gambling industry, economic sociology, the sociology of work, and urban regeneration.

Shifting Food Facts

Shifting Food Facts

Alissa Overend

TAYLOR FRANCIS LTD

This book offers a much-needed reframing of food discourse by presenting alternative ways of thinking about the changing politics of food, eating, and nutrition. It examines critical epistemological questions of how food knowledge comes to be shaped and why we see pendulum swings when it comes to the question of what to eat.As food facts peak and peril in the face of conflicting dietary advice and nutritional evidence, this book situates shifting food truths through a critical analysis of how healthy eating is framed and contested, particularly amid fluctuating truth claims of a “post-truth” culture. It explores what a post-truth epistemological framework can offer critical food and health studies, considers the type of questions this may enable, and looks at what can be gained by relinquishing rigid empirical pursuits of singular dietary truths. In focusing too intently on the separation between food fact and food fiction, the book argues that politically dangerous and epistemically narrow ideas of one way to eat “healthy” or “right” are perpetuated. Drawing on a range of archival materials related to food and health and interviews with registered dietitians, this book offers various examples of shifting food truths, from macro-historical genealogies to contemporary case studies of dairy, wheat, and meat. Providing a rich and innovative analysis, this book offers news ways to think about, and act upon, our increasingly complex food landscapes. It does so by loosening our empirical Western reliance on singular food facts in favour of an articulation of contextual food truths that situate the problems of health as problems of living, not as individualistic problems of eating. It will be of interest to students, scholars, and practitioners working in food studies, food politics, sociology, environmental geography, health, nutrition, and cultural studies.
Charity in Rabbinic Judaism

Charity in Rabbinic Judaism

Alyssa M. Gray

Studying the many ideas about how giving charity atones for sin and other rewards in late antique rabbinic literature, this volume contains many, varied, and even conflicting ideas, as the multiplicity must be recognized and allowed expression. Topics include the significance of the rabbis’ use of the biblical word "tzedaqah" as charity, the coexistence of the idea that God is the ultimate recipient of tzedaqah along with rabbinic ambivalence about that idea, redemptive almsgiving, and the reward for charity of retention or increase in wealth. Rabbinic literature’s preference for "teshuvah" (repentance) over tzedeqah to atone for sin is also closely examined. Throughout, close attention is paid to chronological differences in these ideas, and to differences between the rabbinic compilations of the land of Israel and the Babylonian Talmud. The book extensively analyzes the various ways the Babylonian Talmud especially tends to put limits on the divine element in charity while privileging its human, this-worldly dimensions. This tendency also characterizes the Babylonian Talmud’s treatment of other topics. The book briefly surveys some post-Talmudic developments. As the study fills a gap in existing scholarship on charity and the rabbis, it is an invaluable resource for scholars and clergy interested in charity within comparative religion, history, and religion.

From the Grave to the Throne is an illustration of the love and redemption shown towards Alesha from The Father. At the young age of four, Alesha was separated from and rejected by all of her family, with the exception of her mother. This spirit of rejection, cultivated her heart for the spirit of perversion to enter through early exposure to pornography and sexual acts. By the young adult age of 22, Alesha was a lesbian stud who abused drugs and alcohol. After ten years of being submerged in the "lyfe," Alesha was drawn to seek the Truth. In her passionate pursuit, not only did she meet the God of Truth, but she also became intimate with the God of Grace, that would transform her from the inside out. Truth and Grace began to show up in supernatural and glorious ways, not only to heal her but also to set her free. This book is an illustration of words and art that will demonstrate the love and provision that God has for all of his children. It vividly displays Alesha's journey to freedom through prophetic dreams and visions that she candidly shares through her testimony of salvation. This book will give readers hope and encouragement to seek God for forgiveness, truth and freedom to take back your God-given identity.

Islamic Tolerance

Although pluralism and religious tolerance are most often associated today with Western Enlightenment thinkers, the roots of these ideologies stretch back to non-Western and premodern societies, including many under Muslim rule. This book explores the development of pluralism in Islam in South Asia through the work of the poet, historian and musician Amir Khusraw and sheds new light on how Islam developed its own culture of tolerance. Countering stereotypes of Islam as intrinsically intolerant, the book provides a better understanding of how rhetorics of pluralism develop, which may aid in identifying and encouraging such discourses in the present. Khusraw, a practicing Muslim who showed great affection toward Hindus and used much indigenous imagery in his poetry, is an ideal figure through whom to explore these issues. Addressing issues of ethnicity, religion and gender in the early medieval period, Alyssa Gabbay demonstrates the pre-modern precedents for pluralism, conveying the broad sweep of Perso-Islamicate culture and the profound transformations it underwent in medieval South Asia.Accurately depicting the paradoxicality and jaggedness involved in the development of its composite culture, this book will have great relevance to scholars and students of Islam in South Asia, gender, religious pluralism, and Persian literature.
