The St. Valentine's Day Massacre

The St. Valentine's Day Massacre

A Case of Bad Timing and Poor JudgmentThe machine-gun murders of seven men on the morning of February 14, 1929, by killers dressed as cops became the gangland “crime of the century.” Or so the story went. Since then it has been featured in countless histories, biographies, movies, and television specials. The St. Valentine’s Day Massacre, however, is the first book-length treatment of the subject. Challenging the commonly held assumption that Al Capone ordered the wholesale slayings to gain supremacy in the Chicago underworld, authors William J. Helmer and Arthur J. Bilek assert the crime was a case of bad timing and poor judgment by a secret crew from St. Louis known to Capone’s mostly Italian mob as the “American boys.”The target of the murder squad was indeed Bugs Moran, but the American boys, who were dressed as policemen and arrived in two bogus police cars, entered the garage where the massacre took place before Moran arrived. Not knowing who Moran was or what he looked like, the counterfeit cops stupidly killed everyone to make sure they got their man.Based on a careful review of reliable evidence, a critical reading of news accounts of the time, a 1935 manuscript written by the widow of one of the gunmen, and a lookout’s long-suppressed confession, The St. Valentine’s Day Massacre is a fresh new look at the crime that captured the nation’s imagination. In the end, the machine-gun bullets heard ’round the world marked the beginning of the end for Al Capone.

Organized as a series of authoritative discussions, this book presents the application of Jewish law - or Halakhah - to contemporary social and political issues. Beginning with the principle of divine revelation, it describes the contents and canons of interpretation of Jewish law. Though divinely received, the law must still be interpreted and 'completed' by human minds, often leading to the conundrum of divergent but equally authentic interpretations. Examining topics from divorce to war and from rabbinic confidentiality to cloning, this book carefully delineates the issues presented in each case, showing the various positions taken by rabbinic scholars, clarifying areas of divergence, and analyzing reasons for disagreement. Written by widely recognized scholars of both Jewish and secular law, this book will be an invaluable source for all who seek authoritative guidance in understanding traditional Jewish law and practice.
Max Weber's Sociology of Intellectuals

The social role of intellectuals was a pervasive motif in Weber's thought, particularly in his works on religion and politics. Comprehensively examining and extending Weber's work on the subject, Sadri provides a new perspective on the intelligentsia and its role in society. He also provides a synthetic typology of intellectuals which spans both Eastern and Western traditions. Culling Weber's scattered observations on the subject, Sadri lays a theoretical foundation for a Weberian sociology of intellectuals, making it a valuable resource for scholars interested in the reflections of this great thinker.

Rayna and her husband Bill edited the Kuomintang's English-language newspaper in Wuhan. Rayna's account of her intimate involvement in the Chinese Revolution brings to life the eventful Wuhan years of 1926-27, which shaped the revolution's course. Her letters illuminate from a personal angle the battle for China's future and include remarkable portraits of some of the people who shaped the Communist and Nationalist movements of the time. The book consists of letters Prohme wrote to her closest friend and her husband in the period immediately before, during and after the Wuhan interlude. Her reporting brought her into contact with many major political figures including Madam Sun Yat-sen (a prominent figure in the opposition to Chiang Kai-shek) and Mikhail Borodin (a chief Soviet advisor in China). This book provides an unusual and often moving insight into a fascinating period in modern Chinese history.

This is the first book devoted to an oral history of a British university during the 'swinging sixties'. Students, lecturers and support staff are interviewed about teaching and working on campus in the mid-twentieth century. Told in their own words, it is a story of struggle and sacrifice, pride and commitment. It reveals how the modern university transformed lives, how new technologies propelled path-breaking research, and how with new skills its graduates could remodel society. The University of Strathclyde was created in central Glasgow in 1964 from the merger of two higher-education colleges. The Andersonian started in 1796 as Britain's first college to offer technical-based higher education to both women and artisans, whilst the Commercial College's opening literary night in 1847 was chaired by Charles Dickens. By the 1950s, both colleges still offered students 'useful knowledge' in engineering and commercial subjects, and launched them into local employment according to family traditions. But then in the mid-1960s, industrial decline struck Glasgow.Against the backdrop of the city's tough reputation and devastating social problems, lecturers and students with a mission to improve society came to a new University that offered opportunity -- especially to women, mature students, the working classes and minority groups. Eschewing institutional history, this book debunks the myth of the drop-out generation of sixties' students, their drugs and underground culture. It shows how one University developed as a community of the dedicated and brilliant, creating the learning and researching environment which made 'Going to the Unie' the classic formative experience of the British people in the late twentieth century.

This book is about the power of statistical experiments. In the past, books on experimental design focused almost entirely on manufacturing problems. In contrast, although this book is relevant to manufacturing and includes useful examples in that area, its emphasis is on applications to marketing and service operations. The authors provide a fresh and practical treatment of the key topics in designing and analyzing experiments. Testing in the business world is commonplace, and the usual approach is to change one factor at a time while holding other factors constant. This approach may seem logical and appealing, but, as the authors explain, it is highly inefficient, and may lead to wrong conclusions. The better method, the authors propose, is to test all factors simultaneously. Doing so not only reduces the costs of experimenting but also provides the decision-maker with better information. Throughout the book, the authors illustrate concepts with practical examples. In addition, the book includes a set of 13 separate real-world cases based on the actual implementation of experimental design methods.
