Recent film works from the international duo exploring cultural change Working together for a decade, artists Bárbara Wagner (born 1980, Brazil) and Benjamin De Burca (born 1975, Germany) produce films and video installations that feature protagonists engaged in cultural production. The duo typically collaborates with nonactors to make their films, from writing scripts to staging performances on camera. The resulting works are marked by economic conditions and social tensions present in the contexts in which they are filmed, giving urgency to new forms of self-representation through voice, movement and drama. Accompanying the exhibition at the New Museum—which focuses on projects that the artists filmed in Brazil over the past seven years, as well as a new commissioned piece featuring the theater group Coletivo Banzeiros—this volume includes a conversation between the artists and Margot Norton, as well as texts by Vivian Crockett, Bernardo Mosqueira and Wendelien van Oldenborgh.

A revered Seattle-based artist calls for hope, faith, and truthBarbara Earl Thomas's new body of work carries within it the sediments of history and grapples with race and the color line. At the heart of it lies a story of life and death, hope and resilience—a child's survival. With her quietly glowing portraits of young Black boys and girls, Thomas puts before us the humble question: can we see, and be present to, the humanity, the trust, the hopes and dreams of each of these children?The Geography of Innocence offers a reexamination of Black portraiture and the preconceived dichotomies of innocence and guilt and sin and redemption, and the ways in which these notions are assigned and distorted along cultural and racial lines. Two interconnected visual arguments unfold: a portrait gallery of children from the artist's extended community and an illuminated environment that appears like a delicate paper lantern. To accompany the visual elements, the book's essays examine Thomas's work in the context of different art historical portraiture traditions and political relevance. Thomas also contributes an interview and an essay reflecting on the current climate in which the work exists.

Chicago-based artist Barbara Jones-Hogu (1938–2017) was a central figure of the Black Arts Movement and a founding member of the African Commune of Bad Relevant Artists (AfriCOBRA). Throughout her career she worked in painting, printmaking, film, education, and contributed to major projects including Chicago’s Wall of Respect mural. The Barbara Jones-Hogu: Resist, Relate, Unite catalog is the first monograph of Barbara Jones-Hogu’s work. The book includes a foreword by DPAM Director and Chief Curator Julie Rodrigues Widholm, essays by Tate Modern curator Zoé Whitley and Chicago artist Faheem Majeed, an interview with the artist by art historian Rebecca Zorach, and 22 illustrated plates, a selected bibliography, exhibition history, and checklist. The limited edition catalog was designed by Matt Austin of Candor Arts and features a hand silk screened cover.
