This manual is the definitive guide to GNU Octave, an interactive environment for numerical computation. GNU Octave provides a convenient command-line interface for solving linear and nonlinear problems using vectors and matrices. This updated edition of the manual covers version 3.8.2 of GNU Octave, and includes documentation for new features such as the new graphical userinterface, sparse matrices, linear programming and computational geometry. GNU Octave is free software, distributed under the GNU General Public License (GPL). As GNU Octave became such a big project over the years, we had to split this reference manual in two parts that are two seperate physical books. To keep it consistent with our digital manual, the references and page numbers cover both physical books as it were one. Therefore please note that you probably want to have both parts.

Canada’s Constitution cannot be understood without a thorough foundation in the judicial interpretation of its provisions and principles. This collection of leading decisions by the relevant high courts – the Judicial Committee of the Privy Council until 1949 and the Supreme Court of Canada thereafter – provides that grounding. The third edition of this seminal text is updated to include the most salient, enduring, and influential high court decisions to date. It introduces students to trends and nuances in jurisprudence affecting the major dimensions of the Canadian Constitution, including the federal division of powers, the Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedoms, Indigenous rights, and constitutional change. Each of the 58 decisions in this collection features an introductory essay and discussion questions . The book contains a comprehensive essay on the institutional and historical determinants of judicial interpretation of the Constitution and a bibliography for further reading. Readers will acquire an appreciation of both the legal and political influences on judicial interpretation, the complexity of our constitutional structures, and the influences of the personalities and predilections of Canada’s senior jurists. Proceeding from the conviction that history and institutions matter, this collection will give readers a sophisticated understanding of the Constitution, the work of Canada’s courts, and the development of the Canadian liberal democratic regime.

"Justine Bateman was famous before selfies replaced autographs, and bags of fan mail gave way to Twitter shitstorms. And here's the good news: she took notes along the way. Justine steps through the looking glass of her own celebrity, shatters it, and pieces together, beyond the shards and splinters, a reflection of her true self. The transformation is breathtaking. Revelatory and raucous, fascinating and frightening, Fame is a hell of a ride." --Michael J. Fox, actor, author of A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Future "If you've ever dreamed of being famous someday, you need to read this book. If you've ever called a celebrity, a 'has-been' or a 'flash in the pan' on social media, then you really need to read this book. Justine Bateman has crafted the most compelling and comprehensive treatise on the nature of fame that you're ever likely to read. Through a fearless act of self-examination, which she conducts with the scientific detachment of an anthropologist, Bateman illuminates both the short- and long-term effects of attempting to navigate the labyrinth of celebrity." --Ernest Cline, author of Ready Player One "I thought my ideas about fame were intractable until Justine Bateman took them apart with her relentlessly truthful and engrossing investigation. She mines the subject with bracing honesty, and by including herself in the whole experiment she makes it hard for the reader to avoid examining their own ego, their own social agenda. Justine's voice is fresh: she throws down with a free-associating slam that you won't expect but can identify with, and the searching and sometimes profane rant that accompanies each idea is one you can't help but trust. She distills it all into the questions: Why do we value this person over that one? And why do we ultimately resent the ones we overvalue? An honest and imminently quotable rumination by a qualified and intellectually formidable source." --Mary-Louise Parker, actress, author of Dear Mr. You "Justine Bateman, in a voice both empathetic and take-no-prisoners, has produced a fascinating look at the psychology of present-day Fame. She traces its roots down to humble beginnings in the injured psyche of every human, hoping to find a cure for what ails us all. In these early, heady days of the ascension of social media, in which everyone seems able to fulfill the Warholian dictum of fifteen minutes, Bateman casts a sober, never overly serious eye on today's media landscape and emerges without cynicism on the hard-won side of love and acceptance." --David Duchovny, actor, author of Bucky F*cking Dent "A raw look into stardom and how notoriety got to now with a style that would make Bukowski proud. Justine gives us a vivid, sharp and forceful read." --Jerry O'Connell, actor "A smart, unflinching, touching, riveting, one-of-a-kind hybrid of memoir and cultural analysis. Fame in its contemporary form is strange and powerful and deeply American; so is Fame." --Kurt Andersen, author of Fantasyland Mining decades of experience, Justine Bateman writes a visceral, intimate look at the experience of fame. Combining the internal reality-shift of the famous, theories on the public's behavior at each stage of a famous person's career, and the experiences of other famous performers, Bateman takes the reader inside and outside the emotions of Fame. The book includes twenty-four color photographs to highlight her analysis.

" W]holly riveting." --New York Times Book Review "Instead of crashing and burning, Bateman has found a life outside the maelstrom, ably described in this sharp, take-no-prisoners book." --Kirkus Reviews ENTERTAINMENT SHOWS, MAGAZINES, WEBSITES, and other channels continuously report the latest sightings, heartbreaks, and triumphs of the famous to a seemingly insatiable public. Millions of people go to enormous lengths to achieve Fame. Fame is woven into our lives in ways that may have been unimaginable in years past. And yet, is Fame even real? Contrary to tangible realities, Fame is one of those "realities" that we, as a society, have made. Why is that, and what is it about Fame that drives us to spend so much time, money, and focus to create the framework that maintains its health? Mining decades of experience, writer, director, producer, and actress Justine Bateman writes a visceral, intimate look at the experience of Fame. Combining the internal reality-shift of the famous, theories on the public's behavior at each stage of a famous person's career, and the experiences of other famous performers, Bateman takes the reader inside and outside the emotions of Fame. The book includes a sixteen-page, full-color photo insert to highlight her analysis and a brand-new preface to the paperback edition.
Local Place and the Arthurian Tradition in England and Wales, 1400-1700
The first in-depth study of Arthurian places in late medieval and early modern England and Wales. Winner of the 2024 Dhira B. Mahoney Prize for Outstanding Scholarly Book in Arthurian Studies Places have the power to suspend disbelief, even concerning unbelievable subjects. The many locations associated with King Arthur show this to be true, from Tintagel in Cornwall to Caerleon in Wales. But how and why did Arthurian sites come to proliferate across the English and Welsh landscape? What role did the medieval custodians of Arthurian abbeys, churches, cathedrals, and castles play in "placing" Arthur? How did visitors experience Arthur in situ, and how did their experiences permeate into wider Arthurian tradition? And why, in history and even today, have particular places proven so powerful in defending the impression of Arthur's reality? This book, the first in-depth study of Arthurian places in late medieval and early modern England and Wales, provides an answer to these questions. Beginning with an examination of on-site experiences of Arthur, at locations including Glastonbury, York, Dover, and Cirencester, it traces the impact that they had on visitors, among them John Hardyng, John Leland, William Camden, who subsequently used them as justification for the existence of Arthur in their writings. It shows how the local Arthur was manifested through textual and material culture: in chronicles, notebooks, and antiquarian works; in stained glass windows, earthworks, and display tablets. Via a careful piecing together of the evidence, the volume argues that a new history of Arthur begins to emerge: a local history.

I have written four books containing my poetry, 'Twisted Spiritual Poetry' 1 & 2, 'Memoirs and Poems of a Misguided Junkie', and Healing Rhymes. This will be my fifth poetry book. My books are available on Amazon, have many poems both in my files here at home, 'Sedro Woolley', Washington, and here on allpoetry.com. As I navigate the many different poets on this site, I have never read a poem I didn't like; they are all very gifted and skillful poets in your own rite. Please read my poetry and then tell me honestly what you feel when you read my poems. This is my fifth book, a sequel to my first, second, third, and fourth books. Although this has a different title, which I loved. And this is an extraordinary poetry book because I have included my own and my friends' illustrations, drawings, and images too. I've been an addict for many years, and these have been the darkest years of my life. This book is about healing broken hearts, encouraging those who feel hopeless, and giving to the needy.
