Carnage in the classroom, misogynists in high office, sociopaths in uniform, masculinity is a killer. From styles of dress to the stunted capacity for expressing a diversity of emotions, becoming a man involves killing off and repudiating anything that in our society is held as feminine. When a person is unable to show compassion and tenderness, or when exposed for their frailties, feels angry and humiliated, they have problems. Problems that none of us are immune to. Masculinity, Cremin provocatively declares, is a generic disorder of a sick society that afflicts even the best of us. Neither a condition of being human nor even of male, it is a disorder, as she illustrates, of a capitalist society that depends and even thrives upon its very symptoms. From the perspective of a trans woman raised to be a man, the book maps the disorder and speculates on the possible means to overcome it. Instead of signifying weakness, catastrophes can be prevented when the qualities men often fear and women often feel subordinated to are prioritised, affirmed and nourished. Drawing, amongst others, on Marx and Freud, Cremin eloquently demonstrates why there can be no future other than one in which we are all reconciled as a society with the feminine. In such a future, the terms ‘masculine’ and ‘feminine’ will neither define us nor determine our relationship to one another.

In an alternate Ireland, the politicians are young and the Government is seemingly left-leaning. The Health and Wellness Act, hurriedly signed into law just one year ago, has made it illegal to possess or consume unhealthy food or ‘junk’. When Eadie sees an opportunity to get close to high ranking Government officials, she takes it. Can she find out what happened to her sister or will the same fate befall her?Aftertaste is a new play by Ciara Elizabeth Smyth that offers a theatrical exploration into a world full of violence, greed and food.

Criminal Women in Contemporary French Crime Fiction

Criminal Women in Contemporary French Crime Fiction

An exploration of representations of female criminality in contemporary French crime fiction, this book offers a literary, sociological and feminist analysis of the stereotypes surrounding women and crime. Surveying how these stereotypes are both invoked and disrupted, it covers Pierre Lemaitre’s Alex, Fred Vargas’s Quand Sort la Recluse (This Poison Will Remain), Leïla Slimani’s Chanson Douce (Lullaby) and Hannelore Cayre’s La Daronne (The Godmothe) in their English translations. Addressing the gap of scholarly interest in legal and cultural representations of female violence in crime fiction, Ciara Gorman evaluates the subversive ways in which archetypes of female criminality — ranging from the femme fatale to the witch, and from the mère fatale to the bitch — are deployed not as reductive shorthands about femininity, but as motors of innovation and resistance. The form and plot of each text is examined for its potential as a polar féministe (feminist thriller), a crime novel which weaves the concerns of feminism — be that the prevalence of sexual and sexist violence in society, or the legacy of misogynist representation of women in the crime genre as a whole. Criminal Women considers the female criminal character as a figure of opportunity, the point at which readers and writers alike may reassess their assumptions about female criminality, and about the feminist potential of crime fiction itself.

The portrayal of Ireland on screen has been problematic due to a lack of a sustained indigenous film industry before the establishment of the Irish Film Board in 1980 and the Northern Ireland Film Council in 1989. However, before this, many talented and proficient non-professional filmmakers were capturing events that hold valuable clues to an internal social and historical perspective on twentieth-century Ireland. Northern Ireland has a rich heritage of amateur and independent cinema that includes several prolific filmmakers and collectives. Many of these image makers garnered awards on the prestigious international independent film circuit and had their work shown in film festivals and on television. Crucially, they offered an alternative and illuminating view to the mainstream-cinema and broadcast-media imagery of a conflicted region that was often filmed but little understood. They also laid the groundwork for the vibrant film culture that exists in Northern Ireland today. This book will offer the first scholarly exploration of these 'cine auteurs'.
