The Venerable Sayadaw U Pandita of Burma (also known as Myanmar), was one of the foremost authorities on vipassana (insight) meditation and a pioneer of the Western mindfulness movement. With thousands of students in centers worldwide, Burma's most senior Buddhist monk also trained hundreds of leading meditation teachers in both the East and West. Yet, despite all of this, and numerous influential books compiled from his public talks, he rarely gave interviews. In Wisdom for the World: The Requisites of Reconciliation, he breaks his silence to reveal some of his most compelling insights, delivered as his final teaching for the people of the world and his native country, Burma. Over 9 consecutive nights before he passed away in April 2016 at the age of 95, the Venerable Sayadaw weighed in on some of the most critical issues facing Burma and the world today through exceptionally rare and remarkable conversations with his first Western student, journalist, and friend of nearly 40 years, Alan Clements. Covering topics from religious extremism to systemic oppression, and the requisites for surmounting them, the Venerable Sayadaw deftly elaborated on the Mahasi Sayadaw system of mindfulness meditation and its application in our troubled world. "More important than victory of others is to be victorious over oneself," he says, illuminating the difference between right and wrong mindfulness and calling for a worldwide revolution in Spiritual Intelligence, or "SQ" (a key component of his teachings over the past 15 years). As the principle spiritual adviser to many of the leading figures in Burma's decades long non-violent democratic revolution, Wisdom for the World speaks a final time to those leaders and fosters hope for a country still convulsing from decades of dictatorship. Here, this beloved teacher elucidates the role of reconciliation in calming the turmoil of conflict faced by so many in the world today. With forbearance, wisdom and compassion, the Venerable Sayadaw outlines the theory and practice of gaining mindful control of one's own mind so that we may all move towards a more peaceful society. Essentially, Wisdom for the World provides the timeless psychological and spiritual guidance - the mindful intelligence - for anyone desiring to surmount intolerance, hatred and discrimination, in whatever form they take.Alan Clements Clements was among the first Westerners to ordain as a Buddhist monk in Burma, where he lived in a monastery practicing mindfulness meditation for nearly five years, before being expelled from the country in 1984 by the dictatorship, with no reason given. Leaving the monastic life, Clements returned to the West, becoming a spiritual maverick, journalist, and human rights activist engaged in Burma's nonviolent struggle for freedom while speaking up for political prisoners worldwide. Clements co-authored The Voice of Hope with Burma's Aung San Suu Kyi - the former political prisoner and Nobel Peace Laureate. In addition, his books include, Burma: The Next Killing Fields, and Revolution of the Spirit, both with forewords by the Dalai Lama and endorsed by 8 Noble Peace Laureates and former President Jimmy Carter. He's also written Instinct for Freedom and A Future To Believe In: 108 Reflections on the Art and Activism of Freedom. Clements has been interviewed on ABC National, Talk to America, CBC, VOA, BBC, the New York Times, Time and Newsweek magazines, the Sydney Morning Herald, Utne Reader, Yoga Journal, and scores of other media worldwide. He also delivered a keynote at Amnesty International's 30th Year Anniversary at the John Ford Theater in LA. You can learn more about Alan's work on his website: www.AlanClements.com. Contributing editor Fergus Harlow is a long time assistant to Alan Clements and World Dharma.
For Our Good Always: A Study of Morality Through The Ten Commandments
Throughout history, many people have rejected God because they wanted to act immorally--why does it seem like those walking away from God today believe God is the immoral one? There are so many competing visions of morality. One's culture, background, political affiliation and religious beliefs (or lack thereof) have profound impacts on our moral thought. What one person says is right another says is wrong, and vice versa, leading to much debate and confusion. The God of the Bible steps into this environment with robust clarity about what is truly right and wrong, good and evil. The issue is, we don't always understand why He says this or that, and we don't always like it if it competes with our pre-existing moral thought. And if at one point in time His design for human flourishing was at least respected--increasingly so it is derided as backwards, regressive, or even harmful. For Our Good Always argues that our thinking about morality is profoundly reductionistic, lacking necessary categories that different cultures and times might help us see more clearly. And it offers a truly important consideration: What if God's boundaries and rules for us are actually--deeply and unmistakably--for our good?Through the lens of the Ten Commandments, it explores that question and more, such as: Who gets to decide between right and wrong?Do we each get our own truth? Why does God give us rules and boundaries? What is going on with some of the things I don't understand in the Bible? Why are some of my Christian friends walking away from the faith? This book is published in conjunction with a teaching series at Midtown Fellowship, a family of churches in the Columbia, SC metro area. The Sexy Seniors of South Branch: Tilly and Elmer - Expanded Collection
This Expanded Collection edition of The Sexy Seniors of South Branch now includes ten short stories chronicling the adventures and misadventures of Tilly and Elmer, a sexagenarian couple from South Branch, Iowa. They've been married nearly fifty years, but they're still as frisky as they were back when they were dating in high school. (Their high school exploits are the subject of the Tilly and Elmer FlashbackX series, Coming of Age in South Branch). While they are just as frisky, they are not as thin, athletic, or flexible as they once were. Where there's a will there's a way though, and Tilly and Elmer manage to get themselves into, and usually out of, some funny, surprising, sexy, and occasionally embarrassing adventures.- Skinny-Dipping Scandal recounts Tilly and Elmer's attempt to recreate an afternoon of skinny-dipping and risky romance they remember from their younger days. No one observed them the first time, but this time not all of the tweets come from the birds overhead.- An awkward evening is the subject of Tilly and Elmer's 50th Class Reunion. Each meets an old flame, but like Tilly and Elmer, their fantasy paramours are 50 years older than they once were.- In Tilly and Elmer go to Las Vegas, Tilly and Elmer revisit Las Vegas to try and recapture their lost youth. They don't come back any younger, but when they get home, they find their misadventures have made them local celebrities.- Tilly and Elmer get Crazy when Tilly reads a magazine article on how to drive your man crazy in the bedroom. By the end, both Tilly & Elmer are a little crazy.- Elmer has restored the '52 Chevy pickup he had when he and Tilly were dating in high school. Their attempt to enjoy the intimacy of the small truck cab as they did back then, however, proves more painful than it used to be in Truck Tryst.- In Tilly and Elmer Get Warmed Up, they try to recreate a snowy tryst they had as teenagers, but this time, getting naked in the woods during mid-winter doesn't turn out to have the same appeal it once did. - Elmer goes out fishing, leaving Tilly home to spend the hot afternoon reading a sexy novel about a wench and a woodsman in Tilly's Afternoon Delight. When a young, handsome woodsman arrives in person to trim their backyard oak tree, her afternoon's entertainment becomes more complicated, especially after Tilly loses track of how many gin and tonics she's had.- Tilly and Elmer -in- Decent Exposure. Tilly and Elmer's formerly hidden talents, now shockingly revealed, are the talk of South Branch. - Our favorite sexagenarians' daughter and son-in-law arrive early for dinner and discover Tilly and Elmer, naked and Snug as Two Bugs, on the kitchen floor. - Elmer experiences his first nude beach, and tries a few other surprising things, when he and Tilly visit San Francisco inTilly and Elmer Trip Out.

Tilly and Elmer, high school sweethearts from South Branch, Iowa, tearfully depart for disparate colleges in San Francisco and Cedar Falls where they encounter wildly divergent experiences, and sex with a menagerie of new lovers. Distance, diversity, and dubious dalliances turn their love to disdain. Then they're imprisoned together in an old pickup on a long, troublesome road trip back home.August 8, 1967 - Somewhere in WyomingElmer slowly awoke from a dream in which a young female detective mercilessly interrogated him under an intense accusatory spotlight. She seemed convinced he was guilty of something; whatever it was, Elmer had an unsettling feeling she was right. He cautiously opened his eyes. The blinding spotlight was actually the early morning sun shining through the windshield of his well-used 15-year-old Chevy pickup. Shielding his eyes, Elmer was surprised to find himself in a desert of some kind. He turned to look around and felt a twinge of pain in his neck; he had been sleeping in the driver's seat with his head tilted awkwardly against the side window. As his thoughts cleared, he remembered that late last night the truck had begun to lose power and he had pulled off State Route 130 into an abandoned gas station at the edge of a small town, just west of the middle of nowhere. The town appeared doubtful; a dozen dilapidated dwellings and a tacky tavern that wouldn't open until noon, and where a long-haired, fresh-out-of-college kid in bell bottoms wouldn't be welcome anyway.Elmer suddenly felt apprehensive. Where was Tilly? He looked down to find her curled up asleep next to him, her dusty bare feet against his thigh. At least she was still there, looking beautiful and innocent. Her long peasant dress was pulled up and tucked between her knees; her uncombed long brown hair was sweetly entangled with her left arm, which covered her face. They had been sweethearts four years ago, back in high school, and he couldn't help remembering the delicious and delightfully dissolute things they had learned to do together in this very truck during their two years of do-it-yourself sex education. Evidence of their homework still discolored the seats here and there. Those had been the best days of Elmer's life, before Tilly had left for nursing school in San Francisco and he had departed for the State College of Iowa in Cedar Falls. EVERYTHING was different now.Tilly and Elmer were beginning the fourth day of their confinement in his cramped truck on an unwanted road trip back to South Branch, Iowa, their former hometown. These days they couldn't stand each other's company for four minutes, much less four days. It hadn't gone well so far, and they still faced more dismal days of stony silence alternating with acrimonious accusations.Elmer got out of the truck and slammed the door, awakening the already grumpy girl. He poked around under the hood for a few minutes and when he came back, she was fuming."Give me your panties " Elmer said in the most unromantic way possible, although the thought of her panties brought the hint of a smile to his face.Tilly gave him a look of loathing. "Are you kidding?" she hissed. She turned away from him and said under her breath, "What an asshole ""Damn it, Tilly I need them to fix the truck ""You need my PANTIES to fix the truck? How stupid do you think I am, Elmer?""I don't think you're stupid, but I doubt you're an expert on troubleshooting the fuel delivery system in a 1952 Chevy pickup. I would have used those pink panties Prudence left under the seat if you hadn't tossed them out the window in Winnemucca "
When Prophecies Fail: A Practical Response to the Voice of God
What happens when we receive prophetic promises, decrees or proclamations concerning finances, relationships, occupations, ministries, and physical welfare? We wait in anticipation for their fulfillment, trusting in what we believe is a divine or inspired word. However, when a prophetic word fails to come to pass, we may begin to question the message, the messenger or worse, Divine existence. In this work, Dr. Clements explores the various reasons for the failure of many end-time predictions and personal prophecies. He sheds light on the relationship between prophecies and personal convictions, beliefs, expectations, and behavior. The section on personal prophecies offers helpful insight on prophetic language and meanings while examining the role of human procrastination, suspicion, desire, and misunderstanding. Ultimately, we come to understand that there is no question about Divine interaction in human affairs; the main issue is one of interpretation.God's prophecies have never or will ever will fail. In this regard, "When Prophecies Fail" includes guidelines concerning what causes prophecies to be misinterpreted and, in some cases, unsanctioned, deriving from human ambition rather than Divine inspiration.

Is it psychic or prophetic? Is it demonic or physiological? Is it genuine worship or a spiritual fad? Having discernment is the key to determining the truth. In fact, discernment, the ability to make right decisions and judgments at critical moments, may be the significant difference between success and failure. The book explores discernment as it relates to: demons and angels; prophecy; disease and deliverance; entertainment and worship; and much more.

Whenever and wherever the church has been most influential, there has been an emphasis upon the Holy Spirit. The ministry of the Holy Spirit has sparked evangelism and revival in every sphere of human endeavor. Expanding congregations have required more space, time and programs. However, a most unusual cycle has been observed. The very Holy Spirit that sparked such revival and influence has been gradually nudged out. In fact, ministry programs, activities and entertainment have become a subtle substitute for the work of the Holy Spirit. This work explores this unusual cycle and offers some remedies.

Spend time at the International Criminal Court, and you will hear the familiar language of anti-impunity. Spend longer, and you will encounter the less familiar language of management – efficiency, risk, and performance, and tools of strategic planning, audit, and performance appraisal. How have these two languages fused within the primary institution of global justice? This book explores that question through an historical and conceptually layered account of management's effects on the ICC's global justice project. It historicises management, forcing international lawyers to look at the sites of struggle – from the plantation to the United Nations – that have shaped the court's managerial present. It traces the court's macro, micro and meso scales of management, showing how such practices have fashioned a vision of global justice at organisational, professional, and argumentative levels. And it asks how those who care about global justice might engage with managerial justice at an institution animated by forms, reforms, and the promise of optimisation.
