In 1900, Edith Wharton burst into the settled summer colony of Lenox. An aspiring novelist in her thirties, she was already a ferocious aesthete and intellect. She and her husband, Teddy, planned a defiantly classical villa, and she became a bestselling author with The House of Mirth in 1905. As a hostess, designer, gardener and writer, Wharton set high standards that delighted many, including Ambassador Joseph Choate and sculptor Daniel Chester French. But her perceptive and sometimes indiscreet pen also alienated potent figures like Emily Vanderbilt Sloane and Georgiana Welles Sargent. Author Cornelia Brooke Gilder gives an insider's glimpse of the community's reaction to this disruptive star during her tumultuous Lenox decade.

What drew Nathaniel Hawthorne to a remote village deep in the Berkshire Hills of Western Massachusetts in 1850? Slip into the fascinating social scene he encountered in the drawing rooms and on the croquet lawns of Lenox s country retreats. Here, under the benevolent spell of the Sedgwick family, the separate worlds of high-minded Bostonians and high-powered New Yorkers were stitched together by conversation, recreation and even marriage. Nurturing the lively exchange of ideas on everything from art to abolition, Lenox s cottages played host to a community that enlightened a nation. Luminaries such as Caroline Sturgis Tappan and Oliver Wendell Holmes resume their vibrant lives through the rare photographs and engaging sketches of everyday life in Hawthorne s Lenox: The Tanglewood Circle, which also includes a delightful retrospective visit from Henry James and Edith Wharton."
Baker Island is a quintessential Maine island, frozen in time. It was settled in 1806 by one family, and the island's population peaked at about two dozen people in five households at mid-century. The US government made use of the island's strategic location at the entrance to Frenchman's Bay with a lighthouse and military facilities. Wealthy, artistic, and academic summer visitors to the region--so-called rusticators--discovered its charm as a day trip destination. However, by 1930, only the lightkeeper's family remained. Now mostly part of Acadia National Park, these 123 acres are precious to a disproportionate number of people. Every season, visitors flock to the area, scenic tour airplanes fly overhead, and narrated boat tours skirt the shoreline. Park rangers lead interpretive tours almost daily, leaving from Bar Harbor for half-day visits. Each summer, thousands moor their private boats and row ashore--honeymooning, celebrating, and even scattering ashes. Five generations of rusticators have held picnics on the tempestuous south shore's expansive pink granite surface known as the "Dance Floor."
