Long disregarded, female domestic violence is rapidly gaining awareness as research proves not only that it exists, but that the frequency of women abusing men is much higher than previously assumed. While certain core elements of intimate partner violence are shared among all offenders, female offenders face unique triggers, personal backgrounds and relationship dynamics. Now fully updated and revised, The STOP Program for Women Who Abuse is the most innovative and comprehensive manual to address domestic violence treatment specifically for female offenders, with a programme targeted to engage women in their own healing process. This second edition includes new sessions on the Five Love Languages, the Stages of Change and Stake in Conformity, and updates throughout the text reflect an increased emphasis on trauma theory, attachment theory, mindfulness techniques and gratitudes. Handouts and homework for participants (sold separately) provide structure for recovery in group sessions and at home.

Epicurus and the Singularity of Death

Epicurus and the Singularity of Death

David B. Suits

Bloomsbury Academic
2020
sidottu
In his Letter to Menoeceus, the ancient Greek philosopher Epicurus states that ‘death is nothing to us’. Few philosophers then or since have agreed with his controversial argument, upholding instead that death constitutes a deprivation and is therefore to be feared. Diverging from the current trend and sparking fresh debate, this book provides an imaginative defense of the Epicurean view of death. Drawing on Epicurus’s Principal Doctrines, Lucretius’s De Rerum Natura and Philodemus’s De Morte, David Suits argues that the usual concepts of harm, loss and suffering no longer apply in death, thus showing how the deprivation view is flawed. He also applies Epicurean reasoning to key issues in applied ethics in order to dispute the claim that there can be a right to life, to defend egoistic friendship, and to consider how Epicureanism might handle wills and life insurance. By championing the Epicurean perspective, this book makes a valuable contribution to the contemporary philosophical debate about death.

Analogy in Indian and Western Philosophical Thought

Analogy in Indian and Western Philosophical Thought

David B. Zilberman

Springer-Verlag New York Inc.
2006
sidottu
This book is unusual in many respects. It was written by a prolific author whose tragic untimely death did not allow to finish this and many other of his undertakings. It was assembled from numerous excerpts, notes, and fragments according to his initial plans. Zilberman’s legacy still awaits its true discovery and this book is a second installment to it after The Birth of Meaning in Hindu Thought (Kluwer, 1988). Zilberman’s treatment of analogy is unique in its approach, scope, and universality for Western philosophical thought. Constantly compared to eastern and especially classical Indian interpretations, analogy is presented by Zilberman as an important and in many ways primary method of philosophizing or philosophy-building. Due to its universality, this method can be also applied in linguistics, logic, social analysis, as well as historical and anthropological research. These applications are integral part of Zilberman’s book. A prophetic leap to largely uncharted territories, this book could be of considerable interest for experts and novices in the field of analogy alike.
Faith and Freedom

Faith and Freedom

David B. Burrell

Wiley-Blackwell (an imprint of John Wiley Sons Ltd)
2004
sidottu
FAITH AND FREEDOM In this book, David Burrell, one of the foremost philosophical theologians in the English-speaking world, presents the culmination of his work on creation and human freedom. Drawing on his philosophical and theological insights from the last twenty years, he develops an integrated argument with far-reaching consequences for capitalist cultures. Engaging with the Islamic, Judaic and Christian traditions, and with modern and pre-modern systems of thought, Burrell dismantles the ‘libertarian’ approach to freedom that dominates Western politics and economics, proposing that alongside freedom of choice we need freedom of consent. The author’s rigorous approach, wry humor and generous spirit are evident throughout.
