Loving Life on the Margins

Loving Life on the Margins

In Loving Life on the Margins: the Story of the Agape Community, the authors say they attempt to do what Jesus asked: "Interpret the present time" (Luke 12:56) through the lens of the past. The authors hope the reader of this book, will find in the Agape story something worthy of interpretation as a commentary on the lineage and future of small faith communities like ours.Over the years, the authors have been drawn to the image of God as the Divine Feminine, that God's heart and ungraspable power is Mother as well as Father. The authors have come to believe that the womb-love of God gives birth to voices joined in prayer and song, souls born into longing and pain, struggling to be reflections of what is possible in short time on this imperiled, glorious planet.

Scholars have discussed the work of C. S. Lewis (1898--1963) for decades, but they have focused on Lewis's Christian and pagan allusions and have largely ignored his other important themes. Narnia and the Fields of Arbol: The Environmental Vision of C. S. Lewis is the first book dedicated to Lewis's vision of our relationship to nature and the environment. Matthew T. Dickerson and David O'Hara examine The Chronicles of Narnia and the Ransom books, as well as The Great Divorce, The Abolition of Man, and Lewis's essays and personal correspondence, connecting his writing with that of authors more traditionally associated with environmentalism, such as Wendell Berry, Aldo Leopold, and Gary Snyder. Narnia and the Fields of Arbol offers a fresh way for readers across disciplines to understand the work of this literary legend.

* Marshalls the arguments for affirmative action* Offers strategies for actionWhy is affirmative action under attack? What were the policy’s original purposes, and have they been achieved? What are the arguments being arrayed against it? And–for all stakeholders concerned about equity and diversity on campus–what’s the way forward, politically, legally, and practically? The authors explore the historical context, the philosophical and legal foundations of affirmative action, present contemporary attitudes to the issue on and off campus, and uncover the tactics and arguments of its opponents. They conclude by offering strategies to counter the erosion of affirmative action, change the basis of the discourse, and coordinate institutional support to foster inclusive college environments and multi-ethnic campus communities. This book analyzes the ideological and legal construction of colorblind legislation that has led to the de facto exclusion of people of color from institutions of higher education. It addresses the role of the courts in affecting affirmative action in higher education as a workplace and place of study. It documents the under-representation of collegians of color and presents research on student opinion on race-based policies at two- and four-year institutions. It details the pervasiveness of the affirmative action debate across educational sectors and the status of race among myriad factors considered in college admissions. Finally, it considers affirmative action as a pipeline issue and in the light of educational policy.

Calculus teachers recognize Calculus as the leading resource among the "reform" projects that employ the rule of four and streamline the curriculum in order to deepen conceptual understanding. The Sixth Edition uses all strands of the 'Rule of Four' - graphical, numeric, symbolic/algebraic, and verbal/applied presentations - to make concepts easier to understand. The biblical themes of creation and new creation are inextricably bound to each other. For the God who created the world is the same God who recreates humanity in Jesus Christ and the same God who promises a new heaven and a new earth. How might the relationship between creation and new creation be informed by and reflected in the arts? This volume, based on the DITA10 conference at Duke Divinity School, brings together reflections from theologians, biblical scholars, and artists to offer insights on God's first work, God's future work, and the future of the field of theology and the arts. The Studies in Theology and the Arts series encourages Christians to thoughtfully engage with the relationship between their faith and artistic expression, with contributions from both theologians and artists on a range of artistic media including visual art, music, poetry, literature, film, and more.

As a background to this study of the Arians and Vandals in North Africa, and their impact on the Catholic Church, three books have been written recently by John Martyn, investigating the same period (late sixth century) and the same country. They are, firstly, Pope Gregory's Letters (published with commentary and translation by P.I.M.S, three vols, 2, 2004); see introduction pp 32-42 and epp 1.74, 2.36 and 11.7, and for the Manichean heresy, see epp 2.31, 5.7 and 6.14. Next, the Life of Saint Gregory, bishop of Agrigento (published with his commentary and translation by Edwin Mellen, 2004), is set in North Africa in chapters 7-30, and also covers the main schisms of that time. Finally, in a book on Saint Leander, Archbishop of Seville, soon to be published by Lexington Books, in Maryland, he shows that Leander's parents and baby sister were forced to flee from their home in Cartagena to Carthage, from where the Vandals had recently been expelled. Note also his review of L'Afrique Vandale et Byzantine: Ie Partie,' Paris, 2002, which was published in Parergon, 21,1,2004, pp 155-157, and involved a study of the same schisms, history and archaeology of North Africa.

The pros and cons of each system are highlighted. This up-to-date, superbly illustrated book is the most comprehensive guide to corneal topography currently available.
