Such placodes also give rise to sensory neurons that transmit information to the brain as well as to many neurosecretory cells. This book focuses on the development of sensory and neurosecretory cell types from cranial placodes by introducing the vertebrate head with its sense organs and neurosecretory organs and providing an overview of the various cranial placodes and their derivatives, including evidence of common embryonic primordia. Schlosser discusses how these primordia are established in the early embryo and how individual placodes develop. The latter chapters explain how various placodally derived sensory and neurosecretory cell types differentiate into discrete structures.

It summarizes our current understanding of vertebrate evolution, clarifies conceptual issues relating to homology and evolutionary innovation of cell types, compares the sensory and neurosecretory cell types with similar cell types in other animals, and addresses the question of how cranial placodes evolved as novel structures in vertebrates by redeploying pre-existing and sometimes evolutionarily ancient cell types.

Although it traces its beginnings to 1963, until recently it has only been available on main-frame computers because of its relatively large resource requirements. In 1980 I predicted (1) that by the mid-1980's it would be possible to obtain personal computers in the $10,000 $20,000 range capable of running REDUCE. I am therefore delighted to see that machines of the power of the IBM PC can now run this system, even though these computers are more modestly priced than my 1980 vision of the personal algebra machine. In addition to the need for the more widespread access that personal computers can now provide, there has been a longstanding need for a textbook to help the beginning user become better acquainted with the system. I am therefore very glad that Dr. Rayna has undertaken to write such a book, just as the era of the REDUCE personal algebra machine is beginning. In order to understand the nature of REDUCE, a little history is in order. In 1963 I met Dr. John McCarthy, the inventor of LISP.

Some 350 years ago, in his Discorsi e Dimostrationi Matematici [Galilei], Galileo Galilei discussed whether or not light propagated with a finite though very high velocity, or with infinite speed, instantaneously. The ques­ tion was an open one then, with prominent proponents for either position. For example, Rene Descartes argued on philosophical grounds that light dispersed itself into all of space instantaneously, whereas Galileo was more inclined toward the idea of a finite velocity. In fact, he even reported about an early experiment, which, however, would have to be refined and per­ 1 formed again to reach a definite conclusion. "Sagredo: ... However, of which kind, and how high might we estimate the velocity of light? Is the appearance instantaneous, momentaneous, or, like other movements, temporal? Could one decide this experimentally? Simplicio: Daily experience teaches us, that the spreading of light be instantaneous; if in a large distance the artillery per­ forms shooting exercises, we see the glare of the flame without the ear perceives the sound only after some time delay, while considerable time.

In December 2005 the 3 rd Generation Partnership Project (3GPP) standardization body for Universal Mobile Telecommunication Standard (UMTS) decided to make a new technology the core of an evolving universal terrestrial radio access network: Orthogonal Frequency Division Multiplexing (OFDM). This book explores the success of this new technology and provides a comprehensive treatment of physical layer topics such as basic transmission principles, channel impairment analysis, channel estimation and synchronization, use of multiple antennas, and peak power reduction techniques. Particular emphasis is placed on the multi-user capacity region and development of "close-to-capacity" transmission schemes in the context of general coding problems, involving trade off analysis with respect to different performance criteria useful in practice. This 1992 study of Tennyson evolves its themes from the weaving figure of The Lady of Shalott, which becomes a kind of parable for the author and his texts. Taking its derivation from the Latin texere, 'to weave', Professor Joseph's focus on poetic texture and a sense of textuality leads to a consciousness of his own critical and interpretative weaving, while revealing a pattern in the fabric of Tennyson's work. This procedure brings together a theory of perception, developed in the first part of this study, with an analysis of the gendering of Tennyson's characters in the second part, and engages with the methodologies of deconstruction, psychoanalysis, and gender theory. Neostoicism was one of the most important intellectual movements of the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries. It started in the Protestant Netherlands during the revolt against Catholic Spain. Very quickly it began to influence both the theory and practice of politics in many parts of Europe. It proved to be particularly useful and appropriate to the early modern militaristic states; for, on the basis of the still generally accepted humanistic values of classical antiquity, it promoted a strong central power in the state, raised above the conflicting doctrines of the theologians. Characteristically, a great part of Neostoic writing was concerned with the nationally organized military institutions of the state. Its aim was the general improvement of social discipline and the education of the citizen to both the exercise and acceptance of bureaucracy, controlled economic life and a large army.
