Helmut Isaak is one of the least visible ministers of the Mennonite churches on three continents. He is well-known in Paraguay, Bolivia, and some places in British Columbia, Alberta, and Germany. The story of his commitment and devotion to the church of Christ has remained largely hidden from the Mennonite churches. This book tells that dramatic story of his love and devotion to that church. Helmut Isaak is an extraordinarily gifted person. He was born into and raised in a strong family in Fernheim, Paraguay. He saw devoted commitment to church and community demonstrated by his father, a minister, and his mother, soul of a household of twelve children. His lively intellect led to his acquiring an education to the doctoral level which fitted him for his vocation. To his native Low German were added over the years the languages High German, Spanish, Dutch, English, as well as the biblical languages Hebrew and Greek. He was an accomplished teacher, and a decisive administrator. As a pastor and preacher he was passionate and wise about the gospel. He had the ability to see through thickets of confusion and resistance to the heart of a matter, and thus able to help resolve many an apparently intractable problem. He was a counsellor who listened patiently to those who came to him. As a skilled carpenter he built houses for his family. As a scholar he wrote and published the important book Menno Simons and the New Jerusalem. His education in the Netherlands gave him scholarly distinction as well as an ecumenical spirit. These were the gifts he needed to live out a truly international vocation. Beginning in Paraguay and continuing in British Columbia, Alberta, and Germany, he was teacher and pastor. In Alberta, Mexico, and Bolivia he was teacher and counsellor to troubled people.
The book tells two complimentary stories about events at the end of World War II in Germany. Eva describes how her large Mennonite family flees from their farm in East Prussia, pursued by the Russian army, to settle in the west of Germany. In interesting detail, she describes the hardships and the kindness they received while trekking for two month in horse-drawn wagons through war-torn Germany, often slipping out of the Russian noose. Occasionally, she recounts memories of her childhood and shares the difficulties of starting new careers. Helmut, a young soldier, starts on an adventurous, dangerous journey from his military hospital in West Germany. He hitchhikes to his home village in East Prussia in search of his mother. In gripping detail, he describes life-threatening confrontations with Russian soldiers who now occupy his home country. Later he is expelled from his home by Polish militia and escapes from being jailed in a Polish labor camp.
Mapping Canada's Music is a selection of writings by the late Canadian music librarian and historian Helmut Kallmann (1922â2012). Most of the essays deal with aspects of Canadian music, but some are also autobiographical, including one written during retirement in which Kallmann recalls growing up in a middle-class Jewish family in 1930s Berlin under the spectre of Nazism. Of the seventeen selected writings by Kallmann, five have never before been published; many of the others are from difficult-to-locate sources. They include critical and research essays, reports, reflections, and memoirs. Each chapter is prefaced with an introduction by the editors. Two initial chapters offer a biography of Kallmann and an assessment of his contributions to Canadian music. The variety, breadth, and scope of these writings confirm Kallmann's pioneering role in Canadian music research and the importance of his legacy to the cultural life of his adopted country. In the current climate of cuts to archival collections and services, the publication of these essays by and about a pre-eminent collector and historian serves as a timely reminder of the importance of cultural memory.
Aseptic food processing has become important as a safe and effective method for the preparing and packaging of a variety of foods. This recent book, prepared by a team of European specialists, provides a detailed guide and reference to aseptic food processing technology. All aspects are presented systematically: principles, practice, equipment, applications, packages and packaging, quality control, and safety. All applicable food and beverage categories are examined. More than 130 photographs, diagrams, and other schematics illustrate equipment and their function and a variety of procedures. Tables and graphs provide important quantitative data in convenient form.
The rheology of polymer melts plays an important role today in industry and academia. Although several textbooks on this subject are available, with very few exceptions they cover homogeneous products only. This book is unique in that it focuses on heterogeneous systems such as particle-filled materials and polymer blends, which are highly important in the world market. It deals with similarities and differences of the flow properties of these two classes of material, providing both a fundamental and a practical understanding.Key points of the book are the viscous and elastic properties of engineering polymers filled with functional particles and the influence of nanoparticles on rheological properties. Two key aspects of rheological measurements are discussed: the influence of heterogeneous structures on the flow of materials important for processing and the use of rheological means to get an insight into morphological features. Both approaches are applied to particle-filled melts and to polymer blends. In the latter case it is shown in detail in which way the deformation of droplets formed by the dispersed phase can be affected by outer deformation, particularly in elongation. With the purchase of this book, you also receive a free personal access code to download the eBook.
Understanding the elastic properties of polymer melts is necessary for ensuring successful polymer processing and thus producing high-quality plastic parts. This book is the first to focus on this important topic. Experimental methods and the dependence of elastic behavior on experimental parameters are then presented. Elastic properties of filled and unfilled systems are also directly and polymer blends are also considered. The effects of these effects are included in the plastics processing industry, such as extrudate swells, internal stresses, and shrink films.
A labyrinth is an ancient circular diagram found in cultures around the world. Since antiquity, stories of the labyrinth--closely associated with the ancient sages of the Minotaur, Theseus and Ariadne, and Daedalus and Icarus--have caught the Western imagination. In fact, the labyrinth as an object of contemplation and meditation might be considered the "mandala" of the Western world. In its classical form, this sacred diagram consists of a single circular path with no possibility of going astray (as in the church type of labyrinth, exemplified by the labyrinth of Chartres Cathedral in France). In contrast, the modern labyrinth (more properly called a maze) is a system of misleading paths with a multitude of choices, some of which turn out to be dead ends--a metaphor for a difficult, confusing situation that may end in either good or ill fortune. Taking an approach both reflective and playful, Helmut Jaskolski traces our fascination with this ambiguous ancient motif and shows, through stories ranging from myths and medieval tales to the labyrinthine fiction of Umberto Eco, that the labyrinth is a living symbol for our time.
Originally delivered as a lecture at the Bayerische Akademie der Wissenschaften, this volume was published in 2002 as "AElfric von Eynsham und seine Zeit," introducing, as Gneuss says, "an Anglo-Saxon author . . . who was the first, and for a long time the only, master of prose written in English."
This is not a book of exegetical theology but a readable and relevant communication in Christianity, a message of uncommon literary and theological merit. The familiar passages of the Sermon on the Mount once again are invested with fresh meaning for our day. Professor Thielicke explains the meaning of the biblical texts to the moderns who are all too prone to regard the Sermon on the Mount as a collection of lovely but impossible ideas. He feels the Sermon will never be understood; indeed it will be misunderstood, if we separate the word spoken from the One speaking. The words themselves, apart from Christ, are nothing but a devastating statement of God's radical demands. Only in Christ do these words of the law become the glorious gospel, promising that for everyone life can begin again. Delivered originally in the crisis situation of stricken postwar Germany, the sermons have about them an almost apocalyptic spirit which catches something genuine in the perennial human situation. Thielicke's words on the uncertainty, anxiety, aimlessness, and restlessness of life, are delivered with a warmth and catholicity of spirit.
The short stories in Feathers in the Wind are like feathers blown about helter-skelter in, at times, a gentle breeze and sometimes in a powerful gale. The Nightingale Revisited tells of love found, then lost, and found again. In American Tolstoy, a struggling writer learns that life itself is the most intriguing story of all.In the light-hearted story For Mozart Lover's Only, we meet Mr. Klein, who loves Mozart's music more than anything else in the world, and it is through this love that he meets the beautiful Natalie Brown. Will they find their bliss humming Mozart tunes together? We read about a knight, who delights in threatening the lives of others, only to learn through a young boy that it is his own life that could have been ended by one stroke of a sharp razor In Vaya Con Dios, two elderly widows meet on a cruise ship and learn that this beautiful song played a deeply emotional role in both of their lives. These, and the other stories, take you from Chicago to the Mexican Riviera, from Vienna to Russia, and to many places in between. And in each story, Helmut Stefan makes it seem as if he is talking directly to you, just to you, inviting you to share the joys and sorrows of his characters who all, in some way, have touched his life, too.
This book is dedicated to the countless millions who came to this country seeking a better life for themselves and their children. Their limitless stories of suffering and joy, of despair and fulfillment, are the stories of the fate of mankind. To be sure, no writer, no matter how great, could hope to match the depth and breath of the stories that these people have told, are telling now, and will continue to tell for generations to come. Their stories are a major part of the history of America.I was eleven years old when I first heard my parents say that we were going to America. Going to America - what could be greater than that? America, the land of cowboys and Indians; rock 'n' roll; chewing gum, Coca-Cola; and unlimited opportunities. Now, sixty years later, I take a look back at that adventurous journey across the sea to a new world, and at that unique journey that has been my life up to now. Yes, there has been pain and sorrow, but most of all, I realize that I have been blessed beyond all measure - blessed with a loving family, good friends and an appreciation for all that is beautiful.Who can ask for more than that?
