After recounting his early days as a naval cadet, including a voyage to the Far East aboard the cruiser _K ln_, and as the navigator/observer of the floatplane carried by the pocket battleship _Admiral Scheer_ during the Spanish Civil War, the author describes his flying training as a Stuka pilot. The author's naval dive-bomber Gruppe was incorporated into the Luftwaffe upon the outbreak of war. What follows is a fascinating Stuka pilot's-eye-view of some of the most famous and historic battles and campaigns of the early war years: the Blitzkrieg in France, the Dunkirk Evacuation, the Battle of Britain, the bombing of Malta, North Africa, Tobruk, Crete and, finally, the invasion of the Soviet Union. The author also takes the reader behind the scenes into the day-to-day life of his unit and brings the members of his Gruppe to vivid life; describing their off-duty antics and mourning their loss in action. The story ends when he himself is shot down in flames by a Soviet fighter and severely burned. He was to spend the remainder of the war in various staff appointments.
Als Helmut Wendt mir vor einiger Zeit erz hlte, er sei dabei, ein Buch ber die Pflege dementiell Erkrankter durch Angeh rige zu schreiben, war mein erster Gedanke: "Schon wieder ein Buch ber Demenz " Dann aber bekam ich die ersten Ausz ge des eingearbeiteten Tagebuches einer pflegenden Tochter zu Gesicht und mit jeder Fortsetzung wartete ich gespannt auf noch mehr Informationen, denn ich stellte fest: Dies ist kein Buch wie alle anderen Hier wird der t gliche Ablauf bei Pflege und Betreuung aufgezeigt, wie er wirklich war und wie er auch jederzeit bei anderen Angeh rigen und Betroffenen auftreten kann. Unterlegt wird der Verlauf der Pflege und der Betreuung durch zahlreiche Dokumente wie Briefe, Gutachten, Gerichtsschreiben, Arztberichte, usw.. Ganz deutlich wird auch gezeigt, welche Kraft pflegende Angeh rige t glich oft rund um die Uhr aufbringen m ssen und welche b rokratischen H rden dazu h ufig noch genommen werden m ssen. In meinen Gespr chen mit hilfesuchenden Angeh rigen von dementiell Erkrankten stelle ich immer wieder fest, dass Pflege und Betreuung am Anfang sehr stark untersch tzt werden, sich dann aber sehr schnell der im Buch dargestellten Situation n hern. Auf unseren Informationsveranstaltungen zu Demenzerkrankungen wird mir immer wieder erz hlt: "Ein bisschen mehr einkaufen, kochen usw. werden die Kinder doch wohl noch schaffen " "Wir stellen doch keine gro en Anspr che ..." "Ich habe ganz liebe Kinder, die machen das schon ..." "Die Eltern sind doch bescheiden und pflegeleicht ..." Oder Gespr che verlaufen so: "Du wohnst im Haus (oder in der N he), da kannst Du doch wohl ..." "Wir waren doch auch immer f r dich da, wenn du als Kind mal krank warst ..." "Machen Sie sich nicht zu viel Gedanken, Sie haben doch Kinder, die werden sich schon um sie k mmern ..." - sind teilweise Aussagen von rzten. "Eine Vorsorgevollmacht ist wirklich wichtig, wir machen sie dann, wenn wir sie brauchen ..." Pflege und Betreuung wird meistens sehr stark untersch tzt. "Das bisschen Pflege ..." wird oft von den sp ter zu pflegenden Familienmitgliedern aber auch von Angeh rigen (die nicht pflegen wollen/k nnen) vorgebracht, besonders denen gegen ber, die dann f r die Pflege und/oder die Betreuung zust ndig sein sollen. Das Buch wendet sich nicht nur an Angeh rige, sondern auch an die Menschen, die bei der Pflege helfen oder entlasten wollen (so wie wir von der Alzheimer-Gesellschaft) und an Menschen, die sich fr hzeitig Gedanken machen ber den Lebensabschnitt, den sie nicht mehr eigenverantwortlich bestimmen k nnen. The book tells two complimentary stories about events at the end of World War II in Germany. Eva describes how her large Mennonite family flees from their farm in East Prussia, pursued by the Russian army, to settle in the west of Germany. In interesting detail, she describes the hardships and the kindness they received while trekking for two month in horse-drawn wagons through war-torn Germany, often slipping out of the Russian noose. Occasionally, she recounts memories of her childhood and shares the difficulties of starting new careers. Helmut, a young soldier, starts on an adventurous, dangerous journey from his military hospital in West Germany. He hitchhikes to his home village in East Prussia in search of his mother. In gripping detail, he describes life-threatening confrontations with Russian soldiers who now occupy his home country. Later he is expelled from his home by Polish militia and escapes from being jailed in a Polish labor camp.
Mapping Canada's Music is a selection of writings by the late Canadian music librarian and historian Helmut Kallmann (1922â2012). Most of the essays deal with aspects of Canadian music, but some are also autobiographical, including one written during retirement in which Kallmann recalls growing up in a middle-class Jewish family in 1930s Berlin under the spectre of Nazism. Of the seventeen selected writings by Kallmann, five have never before been published; many of the others are from difficult-to-locate sources. They include critical and research essays, reports, reflections, and memoirs. Each chapter is prefaced with an introduction by the editors. Two initial chapters offer a biography of Kallmann and an assessment of his contributions to Canadian music. A labyrinth is an ancient circular diagram found in cultures around the world. Since antiquity, stories of the labyrinth--closely associated with the ancient sages of the Minotaur, Theseus and Ariadne, and Daedalus and Icarus--have caught the Western imagination. In fact, the labyrinth as an object of contemplation and meditation might be considered the "mandala" of the Western world. In its classical form, this sacred diagram consists of a single circular path with no possibility of going astray (as in the church type of labyrinth, exemplified by the labyrinth of Chartres Cathedral in France). In contrast, the modern labyrinth (more properly called a maze) is a system of misleading paths with a multitude of choices, some of which turn out to be dead ends--a metaphor for a difficult, confusing situation that may end in either good or ill fortune. Taking an approach both reflective and playful, Helmut Jaskolski traces our fascination with this ambiguous ancient motif and shows, through stories ranging from myths and medieval tales to the labyrinthine fiction of Umberto Eco, that the labyrinth is a living symbol for our time.
