Studies on Eighteenth-Century Geology

Studies on Eighteenth-Century Geology

Rhoda Rappaport; edited by Kenneth L. Taylor

Routledge

nidottu
In a scholarly career spanning five decades, Rhoda Rappaport published perceptive analyses of science in the culture of early Modern Europe, France in particular, with strong emphasis on geology's early development. Of the sixteen papers in this volume, most focus on aspects of geology's cultivation during the 'long' 18th century, from the times of Hooke, Leibniz, and Fontenelle to those of Lavoisier, Werner, and Cuvier. Among the topics most closely treated here are the French mineralogical mapping project initiated by Guettard; contemporary efforts to interpret the earth historically (such as through Noah's Flood); and difficulties presented by the vocabulary often used in traditional histories of geology. Much of Rappaport's research addressed two problems prevalent within 18th-century earth science: the proper understanding of petrifactions, or fossil objects; and struggles to establish reliable knowledge of the earth's past. She also examined the chemistry of G.-F. Rouelle, which she saw as effectively an attempt at systematic comprehension of the entire mineral realm; trans-national features of scientific pursuits as illustrated in the careers of the naturalist Vallisneri and the mineralogist (and philosophe) d'Holbach; and aspects of science's promotion in France through government patronage and academic privilege.

Grandparents/Grandchildren

Arthur Kornhaber; Kenneth L. Woodward

In this book Kornhaber and Woodward explore the vital connections that link generations to each other and expose a new social contract that destroys the emotional bonds between grandparents and grandchildren. This is the first book that reviews, in a careful ethnographic manner, the relationship of grandchildren to grandparents and the place of love at one end and abandonment at the other by grandparents. The authors probe the deep, unexplored emotional histories of hundreds of grandparents: how they feel about themselves, their grandchildren, and their loss of function within today's nuclear family. With sharp increases in the number of broken families and working mothers, grandparents are more vital than ever and also more available than ever. This basic research document shows how grandparents recover their natural role as elders of the family and of society. The authors' basic premise is that to exist is to be connected, and that no matter how grandparents act, they affect the emotional well-being of their grandchildren, for better or for worse, simply because they exist.

Challenging the Growing Scholarly Orthodoxy on the American Founding Not too long ago, recognizing the achievement of the American Founding and the U.S. Constitution was a bipartisan undertaking. But many politicians and scholars now attack the Constitution-or they simply disregard it. Not all scholars, though. This book brings together a dozen leading thinkers who challenge this growing orthodoxy. Here you will find fascinating essays by such respected scholars as Pepperdine University's Gordon Lloyd, Catholic University's Claes Ryn, the University of Louisville's Gary L. Gregg II, and the late Peter Augustine Lawler. Defending the Republic honors the work of one of the nation's foremost constitutional scholars, Georgetown University's George W. Carey (1933-2013). Carey repeatedly warned about the importance of defending the Constitution and the political order it established-warnings that, now more than ever, we must heed.
Who Will Care for the Orphan?

Who Will Care for the Orphan?

Feeding, providing potable water, clothing, housing, education, and access to healthcare for orphans and vulnerable children will provide the United Methodist Church its raison d'ê·tre for the 21st century and beyond. It will serve to re-unite and re-ignite the Wesleyan flame that flickers tentatively today. Who Will Care for the Orphan: If you are a United Methodist, It Could Be You is more than simply a title. It is an invitation to authentic Christian discipleship. Caring for orphans and vulnerable children is Biblically-based: the Bible commands its readers to care for orphans (often coupled with caring for widows and resident aliens) thirty-one times, as seen in this well-known but oft-ignored passage: “Religion that is pure and undefiled before God, the Father, is this: to care for orphans and widows in their distress, and to keep oneself unstained by the world” (James 1:27). Service to orphans and vulnerable children is consistent with John Wesley’s two-pronged means of grace, consisting of the works of piety and the works of mercy. Wesley himself wrote these words to George Whitefield: “Can anything on earth be a greater charity, than to bring up orphans?” Who Will Care for the Orphan offers United Methodists an alternative to the bitter infighting that has defined, divided, and created deep divisions within the denomination for the past forty years. Suggesting that United Methodist must agree to disagree on some political and theological positions, this proposed path forward replaces internal debate with service to the least, the last, and the lost. Dr. Lavender, drawing from decades of pastoral leadership, personal stories, and extensive research, presents the compelling needs of orphans and vulnerable children around the planet, laying out the case that caring for these little ones is a key to true peace with justice.

TOP KNIFE: The Art & Craft of Trauma Surgery

TFM Publishing Ltd

Operative trauma surgery is a key element of surgical training world-wide, but many surgical trainees have only limited exposure to it throughout their training. The aim of this book is to provide a detailed technical guide for trauma surgery by two experienced surgical educators who are experts in the field. The original concept behind this text (compared to other operative surgery texts) is a special emphasis on intra-operative judgement, decision-making, and thought processes, as well as technical 'tips and tricks'. The book will be generously illustrated with black-and-white line drawings, but will NOT be a surgical atlas, because there will not be a step-by-step sequence of illustrations for each procedure. The illustrations will be incorporated into the text rather than appearing on separate pages. As such, the book will be an 'operative surgery' book, along the lines of such British classics as Peter Jones' 'Emergency Abdominal Surgery', Hugh Dudley's editions of 'Hamilton Bailey's Emergency Surgery' and Keen's 'Operative Surgery and Management'.

Practical Pharmacology for Alzheimer’s Disease

In this book, the four leading experts on the ACE inhibitors donepezil, galantamine, and rivastigmine and the NMDA receptor antagonist memantine explain the practical pharmacology of these symptomatic drugs with the aim of providing a sound basis for their clinical use in patients with Alzheimer’s disease. In addition, an introductory chapter considers the basic theory of pharmacology for Alzheimer’s disease and the book closes with an overview of the ways in which symptomatic drugs for dementia are used. The wide acceptance of the amyloid cascade hypothesis has led to vigorous development of disease-modifying drugs for Alzheimer’s disease, such as amyloid vaccinations and gamma- or beta-secretase inhibitors. The failure of clinical trials of these drugs to yield satisfactory results has, however, meant that for the time being patients continue to be treated only with symptomatic drugs. There is accordingly a need to become more proficient in the use of symptomatic medicines, and it is against the background of this quest that Practical Pharmacology for Alzheimer’s Disease will be of wide interest.

The second edition of Hair Transplant 360: Volume 4 – Follicular Unit Extraction (FUE) is an illustrated guide to this minimally invasive procedure, involving the grafting of hair follicles that are genetically resistant to balding, onto a bald scalp. This book is edited by Samuel M Lam, from the Lam Institute for Hair Restoration, Texas, and Kenneth L Williams Jr from Orange County Hair Restoration, California. With the advent of hybrid-punch technology for follicular unit excision (FUE) in 2017, the first edition of this book became outdated and required a major revision. The new edition more than doubles the scope of the prior edition from 25 chapters in a single book, to 60 chapters in two hardcover volumes. The first volume updates and expands on the previous edition’s sections and is divided into the following: Basics, Operative Fundamentals, Practice Considerations, and Devices. The second volume is entirely new and is sectioned into Concepts, Techniques, Adjunctive Measures, Regional and Ethnic, Complications and Repair, and How I Do It and Special Topics. This unique, comprehensive text provides practical, up to date knowledge on FUE and incorporates over 100 videos that cover a range of subjects showcasing operative technique, interviews, video lectures and much more, all easily accessed via a QR code embedded in each chapter. In addition, full digital access is available on a mobile responsive web-browser.

Kluwer Law International

Completely revised and updated, this seventh edition of a well-received desk reference offers in one volume a comprehensive review of United States (US) copyright, patent, and trademark laws. Like its previous editions, the book's thorough and sophisticated treatment of this complex material escapes the cumbersome overelaboration of a multivolume treatise on the one hand and a superficial "nutshell" on the other hand. Maintaining the systematic structure that makes it easy for users to zero in on any particular matter, the new edition incorporates the changes that have entered into force since the sixth edition and expertly examines their effects. The three major categories of copyright, patent, and trademark are covered in turn-along with a fourth part on chip protection-with detailed but concise examination and analysis of such issues and topics as the following and much more: subject matter of protection; conditions of protection; registration procedures; scope of exclusive rights; transfer of interests; fair use; rights in unregistered marks; protection of computer software, code, and databases; remedies and defenses; and procedural issues in infringement actions. The authors examine significant case law, updated for this edition, in the course of their analysis.
