During the summer of 1964, hundreds of American college students descended on Mississippi to help the state's African American citizens register to vote. Student organizers, volunteers, and community members canvassed black neighborhoods to organize the Mississippi Freedom Democratic Party (MFDP), a group that sought to give a voice to black Mississippians and demonstrate their will to vote in the face of terror and intimidation. In For a Voice and the Vote, author Lisa Anderson Todd gives a fascinating insider's account of her experience volunteering in Greenville, Mississippi, during Freedom Summer, when she participated in organizing the MFDP. Innovative and integrated, the party provided political education, ran candidates for office, and offered participation in local and statewide meetings for blacks who were denied the vote. For Todd, it was an exciting, dangerous, and life-changing experience. Offering the first full account of the group's five days in Atlantic City, the book draws on primary sources, oral histories, and the author's personal interviews of individuals who were supporters of the MFDP in 1964.

From the summer of 1933 to the fall of 1934, more than 38 million fairgoers visited a 3-mile stretch along Lake Michigan, home to Chicago’s second World’s Fair. Millions more experienced the Century of Progress International Exposition through newspaper and magazine articles, newsreels, and souvenirs. Together, all marveled at the industrial, scientific, consumer, and cultural displays, many of which were housed in fifty massive and colorful exhibition halls, the largest architectural project realized in the United States during the Great Depression. In the richly illustrated Building a Century of Progress, Lisa D. Schrenk explores the pivotal role of the 1933 Chicago World’s Fair in modern American architecture. She recounts how the exposition’s architectural commission promoted a broad definition of modern architecture, not relying on purely aesthetic characteristics but instead focusing on new design solutions. The fair’s pavilions incorporated recently introduced building materials such as masonite and gypsum board; structural innovations (for example, the first thin-shell concrete roof and the first suspended roof structures built in the United States); and new construction processes, most notably the use of prefabrication. They also featured curiosities like the giant, constantly operating mayonnaise maker and the glass-walled House of Tomorrow, which had no operable windows. Schrenk shows how the halls’ designs reflected cultural and political developments of the period, including the expanding relationships between science, industry, and government; the rise of a corporate consumer culture; and the impact of the Great Depression. Many of the designs provoked intense responses from critics and other prominent architects, including Frank Lloyd Wright and Ralph Adams Cram, fueling heated debates over the appropriate direction for architecture in the United States. Demonstrating the rich diversity of progressive American building design seen at the fair, Building a Century of Progress captures a crucial moment in American modernism. Lisa D. Schrenk is assistant professor of architecture and art history at Norwich University and former education director of the Frank Lloyd Wright Home and Studio Foundation.

From the moment Dove Gray discovered the existence of a being as wonderful as 'horse', she knew without doubt magic had something special in store for her.In the wake of heart-wrenching incidents, a perversely-humored, highly opinionated stallion is literally dropped on Dove Gray's doorstep. Suddenly the life lessons she'd learned by the time she was five years old--keep to yourself, do it yourself, and be quiet--no longer suffice to ground her. As for the magic she unwittingly partnered with via a discarded drawing pad and pencils, she feels its once supportive endeavors have hopelessly abandoned her.It will take Cloud-the stallion, an enigmatic, equally-scarred questioner disturbing her dreams, and a few extremely patient friends, to put Dove wholly together for the first time in her life as she 'hears' the stallion talking to her, and she begins to falter in the day to day running of Creekside Stables-- even as repairs seem to literally take care of themselves Perhaps it's only the horse riding lessons she gives which keep her on her feet or the way her best friend, Sheer, an Arabian mare, needs her. Or perhaps it's the box of dropped-off kittens added to the mix which has her finally crying for help- instigating 'something'...Or is the magic instituting its own covert agenda?

When Lisa Bonchek Adams was diagnosed with breast cancer in 2006 at the age of 37, she decided to start writing a blog about her life as a legacy to leave for her family. Her readership grew quickly, and Lisa discovered she had a remarkable gift for expressing what others could not find the words to say. Lisa fearlessly addressed difficult topics such as what to say to friends and family; how to make good decisions and handle bad news; and, most importantly, how to keep going when things start to seem hopeless. She helped those with cancer feel understood, and those without cancer to understand. When Lisa died in 2015, her readers asked for a book that would bring together her most popular writings in one place. Persevere: A Life With Cancer is the result. Equal parts poetry, journal, and memoir, it is a moving and inspiring portrait of what it means to live with a terminal illness, and a guide for patients, families, friends, and caregivers.
