Egli diventa cosi Adriano Meis, e va a stabilirsi a Roma, in una pensione di famiglia, popolata da curiosi personaggi. Sono questi i personaggi che cominciano a ricreare attorno a Mattia la vita sociale alla quale egli aveva pensato di sfuggire. Alla fine il protagonista, non potendo liberarsi altrimenti dalla nuova realta cresciutagli intorno se non "morendo " di nuovo, decide di uccidere Adriano Meis e di riprendere la sua antica personalita di Mattia Pascal. Cosi ritorna al paese, trova la moglie sposata a un suo antico innamorato e con una figlioletta, si rifiuta di riprendere il suo posto nella vita civile e familiare, rimane il fu Mattia Pascal che ogni tanto si reca a visitare la propria tomba (Aonia edizioni).
Since the first edition of this book was written in 1977, there has been a tremendous increase in the use of Pascal. This increased use has had two significant effects. (1) It has produced a bett er understanding of the facilities of Pascal and their use. (2) It has fostered the production of the ISO standard for Pascal. This second edition reflects both this better understanding and the clarifications and changes to Pascal which have resulted from the production of the BSljlSO Pascal standard. The standard (BS 6192, which supplies the technical content for ISO 7185) is the definitive document on Pascal. My work on the Pascal standard has convinced me that the description of a programming language may be tutorial, or it may be definitive, or it may be neither! The chapters of this book do not constitute a definitive description of Pascal. They are essentially tutorial. The book is based on an introductory lecture course given at Manchester. In addition to lectures, the course consists of two kinds of practical work. The first is based on the solution of short pencil-and-paper exercises. The second requires the student to write complete programs and run them using interactive computer terminals. Each chapter of the book concludes with exercises and problems suitable forthese purposes. Although solutions to all of these are not presented in the book, teaching staff may obtain them by application to the authors.
Mattia Pascal vive in un immaginario paese ligure, Miragno, dove il padre, che si era arricchito con i traffici marittimi e il gioco d'azzardo, ha lasciato in eredit alla moglie e ai due figli una discreta fortuna. A gestire l'intero patrimonio un avido e disonesto amministratore, Batta Malagna, la cui nipote, Romilda, viene messa incinta da Mattia dopo che non riuscito a farla sposare all'amico Pomino. Mattia viene costretto a sposare Romilda e a convivere con la suocera vedova che non manca di manifestare il suo disprezzo per il genero che considera inetto. Tramite l'amico Pomino, Mattia ottiene un lavoro come bibliotecario ma dopo un po' di tempo, infelice per il lavoro che trova umiliante e per il matrimonio che si rivelato sbagliato, decide di fuggire da Miragno e di tentare l'avventura in Francia. Arrivato a Montecarlo e fermatosi a giocare alla roulette, in seguito ad una serie di vincite fortunate, diventa ricco. Deciso a ritornare a casa per riscattare la sua propriet e vendicarsi dei soprusi della suocera, un altro fatto muta il suo destino. Mentre in treno legge per caso su un giornale che a Miragno stato ritrovato nella roggia di un mulino il cadavere di Mattia Pascal. Sebbene sconvolto, comprende presto che, credendolo tutti ormai morto, pu crearsi un'altra vita. Cos , con il nome di Adriano Meis, inizia a viaggiare prima in Italia e poi all'estero, fintantoch decide di stabilirsi a Roma in una camera ammobiliata sul Tevere. Si innamora, ricambiato, di Adriana, la dolce e mite figlia del padrone di casa, Anselmo Paleari, e sogna di sposarla e di vivere un'altra vita, ma presto si rende conto che la sua esistenza fittizia. Infatti, non essendo registrato all'anagrafe, come se non esistesse e pertanto non pu sposare Adriana, non pu denunciare il furto subito da Terenzio Papiano, un losco individuo che lo ha raggirato, e non pu fare tutte quelle cose della vita quotidiana che necessitano di una identit . Finge cos un suicidio e, lasciato il suo bastone e il suo cappello vicino a un ponte del Tevere, ritorna a Miragno come Mattia Pascal. Sono intanto trascorsi due anni e arrivato al paese, Mattia viene a sapere che la moglie si risposata con Pomino e ha avuto una bambina. Si ritira cos dalla vita e trascorre le sue giornate nella biblioteca polverosa dove lavorava in precedenza a scrivere la sua storia e ogni tanto si reca al cimitero per portare sulla sua tomba una corona di fiori. I temi che vengono affrontati in "Il fu Mattia Pascal" sono molteplici ma tra i principali si ricordano il tema della forma, quello della famiglia, quello dell'identit , quello dell' "inettitudine", e infine quello del "gioco d'azzardo e dello spiritismo".
