Case Study Analysis in the Classroom

Case Study Analysis in the Classroom

Renee W. Campoy

"Case Study Analysis in the Classroom encourages students to consider best practices in teaching and to solve problems concerning students who are gifted, underachieving, resistant to classroom learning, or who have special needs. This book is a valuable way to introduce students to the complex world of teaching and learning."–Arthur T. Costigan, Queen's College, City University of New York Stories of students in need, or of teachers who are struggling, draw readers into the process of solving classroom problems in a manner that traditional textbook formats are unable to match. Presented in an engaging and stimulating manner, Case Study Analysis in the Classroom: Becoming a Reflective Teacher provides beginning teachers a variety of typical classroom problems to analyze and solve. Solving the case study problems helps new teachers develop the knowledge bases they need to solve real problems in their own classrooms. More than a book of cases, it is an important starting point for students learning about case study research, especially the analysis of cases and their potential uses in the classroom. In addition, readers will also be guided through the process of reflective problem solving, developing an educational philosophy, and writing their own case studies. Author Renee Campoy has written cases that tackle challenging and controversial problems. Her approach rests on the foundation that authentic learning and growth are best achieved through ideas that challenge assumptions and preconceived notions about education. A matrix of case studies is included that groups the cases by grade level, case focus, and primary educational topic, allowing students and instructors at all levels to customize their use of the book. Case study topics include * Low academic achievement* Learning disabilities* Low motivation* Misbehaving and disruptive students* Reluctant readers* High-stakes assessment* Inappropriate scaffolding* Cultural conflict * Socioeconomic issues* Attention deficit/hyperactive disorder* Parent conferences* Bilingual education To support the problem solving process, each case study includes a rubric that provides feedback to the reader about the quality of their solution. The rubric is research based and written according to the King and Kitchener model of reflective judgment. This approach encourages teachers to apply their classroom experiences, knowledge of content, and understanding of learning theory during classroom problem solving. Case Study Analysis in the Classroom is well suited as a text for courses throughout education curricula, including educational foundations, research methods, field experience and practicum, and instructional strategies courses. It will also be an invaluable desk reference for practicing teachers and administrators who need additional guidance on classroom problem solving.

Stalking Sociologists

Stalking Sociologists

Until recent years, the Federal Bureau of Investigation enjoyed an exalted reputation as America's premier crime-fighting organization. However, it is now common knowledge that the FBI and its long-time director, J. Edgar Hoover, were responsible for the creation of a massive internal security apparatus that undermined the very principles of freedom and democracy they were sworn to protect. While no one was above suspicion, Hoover appears to have held a special disdain for sociologists and placed many of the profession's most prominent figures under surveillance. In Stalking Sociologists, Mike Forrest Keen offers a detailed account of the FBI's investigations within the context of an overview of the history of American sociology. This ground-breaking analysis history uses documents obtained through the Freedom of Information Act. Keen argues that Hoover and the FBI marginalized sociologists such as W. E. B. Du Bois and C. Wright Mills, tried to suppress the development of a Marxist tradition in American sociology, and likely pushed the mainstream of the discipline away from a critique of American society and towards a more quantitative and scientific direction. He documents thousands of man-hours and millions of dollars dedicated to this project. Faculty members of various departments of sociology were recruited to inform on the activities of their colleagues and the American Sociological Association was a target of FBI surveillance. Keen turns sociology back upon the FBI, using the writings and ideas of the very sociologists Hoover investigated to examine and explain the excesses of the Bureau and its boss. The result is a significant contribution to the collective memory of American society as well as the accurate history of the sociological discipline."This ground-breaking book documents in meticulous detail decades of harassment and surveillance of major American sociologists by the FBI. The misuse of power...will outrage all Americans and raise significant professional issues within the social sciences."--Mary Jo Deegan, professor of sociology, University of Nebraska
The Guardianship of Best Interests

The Guardianship of Best Interests

Renée N. Lafferty

McGill-Queen's University Press

It is difficult to imagine how orphan asylums and children's homes - often depicted as places where abuse, deprivation, and cruelty were commonplace - once presented a viable solution to child neglect. Renee N. Lafferty examines this response as it played out in Halifax, demonstrating how these homes reacted both creatively and valiantly to their environment, despite chronic underfunding and a narrow vision of the possibilities available to disadvantaged children. The Guardianship of Best Interests traces the creation and administration of children's homes in Halifax from the mid-nineteenth century to their closure in the mid-twentieth. Against the backdrop of a city torn apart by race and religious politics, financial challenges, two world wars, and the devastating explosion of 1917, Halifax institutions frequently represented themselves as the cutting edge of professional child welfare methods. Placing their histories at the core of this study, Lafferty challenges the common assertion that such homes were readily abandoned in favour of the foster care method promoted by the Children's Aid Society. Through the unique perspective gained by considering inter-denominational competition, along with the effects of racism and the political posturing of the province's emerging welfare bureaucracy, The Guardianship of Best Interests unearths the significant similarities between past child welfare practices and our current approaches toward neglect and dependency.

Throughout history, humans have used dance as a benefit for mind, body, and soul. In some cases, governments or churches have banned certain dances for a variety of reasons. This work provides an exploration of dances banned around the world, then revived by a handful of brave proponents. The sixteen case studies--ranging from Argentina's Tango and Cambodia's Royal Classical Ballet to Brazil's Samba and Ireland's Step Dance--reveal the meaning of the dance to each culture and the importance of the art form to the creation of healthy sociological and political climates. Chapters detail each dance's origins, technical steps and movements, costumes, music, and political history, providing an informative overview of the oppression of dance culture through history. Instructors considering this book for use in a course may request an examination copy here.
