The Adventures of Roderick Random is a picaresque novel written by Tobias Smollett written before 1748. The book follows the misadventures of the eponymous main character, Roderick Random, as he navigates through life in 18th-century Britain. Roderick is a young man of humble origins who dreams of making his fortune and rising in society. However, he is constantly beset by misfortune and finds himself at the mercy of cruel fate and the nefarious actions of those around him. Throughout the novel, Roderick experiences a series of wild and often comical adventures, including being press-ganged into the Navy, working as a quack doctor, and falling in love with a woman who turns out to be a thief. The Adventures of Roderick Random is considered one of the earliest and most influential examples of the picaresque novel genre, which portrays the adventures of a rogue or antiheroic protagonist. It remains a beloved classic of English literature and a testament to Smollett's skill as a writer.

Despite being aggressive and frequently violent, Roderick is still very loving and giving. His father lost his inheritance and fled Scotland, leaving his son impoverished. The innocent Roderick arrives in London after serving a brief apprenticeship to a surgeon. There, he runs into various outlaws.
The Seasons of Rick Roderick explores the remarkable life of a West Texas–born philosopher who rose to fame in the early 1990s as one of America’s most beloved philosophy professors. Known for his dynamic lectures recorded by The Teaching Company, Rick Roderick captivated audiences nationwide with his wit, humor, and ability to make complex ideas accessible. Admirers included cultural icons such as George Lucas and U.S. Senator Orrin Hatch. But behind the brilliance was a man shaped by a difficult Texas childhood, struggles with anxiety and depression, and the devastating loss of a loved one during his teenage years. Roderick’s longtime friend, novelist Thomas Zigal, offers a deeply personal account of their thirty-year friendship, interwoven with excerpts from Roderick’s unfinished autobiography at the time of his death in 2002. Part biography, part memoir, The Seasons of Rick Roderick is a bittersweet portrait of a charismatic professor whose vibrant teaching style and sharp mind inspired thousands of listeners. As a volume in the TCU Press Texas Writer’s Series, this book sheds light not only on the legacy of a unique philosopher but also on the enduring power of friendship, resilience, and the pursuit of knowledge.
