Tina lived in a time when there was no name or diagnosis for mental illnesses nor an understanding of the various types of mental ailments and treatment for them. As the years passed, the medical science of mind matters, psychiatry, and help for dysfunctional personalities came into its own. Today, in our modern world, there is help and medical professionals trained to work in the field of the human mind. So many trigger points and causes lead to these behavior patterns-from trauma to the simple struggle of living day by day with all that this brings to us. Some of us are more resilient, more able to deal with stress and strain. Many are not for a variety of reasons and causes. Please consider her story, and if you identify with her or you see that your loved one or a family member does, please be brave and reach out for help. Make the choice deliberately and on purpose to get the help you need. Don't waste time waiting for later and, while you do, destroy those around you and your own chance to be happy and to heal.

Alida lives in paradise, so what could go wrong? When she meets a boy from the opposing tribe, their friendship quickly blossoms into something more....What will happen if someone discovers their forbidden love? This story is a great way to get children to see the world in a more creative light. Kids will love learning about the Ta no culture through dynamic illustrations and playful verbiage. Perfect for the classroom or home library to inspire and bring a little magic to young readers. This retelling of this Ta no legend brings an ancient cultureーand a young loveーto colorful life. Reader's Favorite Five-Star Review: "Taino Tales: The Secret of the Hummingbird by Vicky Weber is a beautiful story that tells young readers about how the hummingbird came to be in Taino legend. Olha Melnyk's colorful and vivid images breathe life into the characters and the story and give it a good pace and movement. The story is both educational and informative and teaches readers about the culture of the Taino tribe, the indigenous people that lived in the Caribbean. Taino Tales is a wonderful story for parents and tutors to read out to children to teach them about the Taino tribe in an entertaining way. The Taino Tidbits section at the end of the book is interesting and gives readers interesting facts about the Taino tribe." -Mamta Madhavan from Readers' Favorite"This is a beautiful retelling of a Taino tale. The stunning illustrations of the village and characters are each art pieces suitable for framing. While I was unfamiliar with this story, it is reminiscent of Romeo and Juliet, but the fate of these loves is far more sweet. Imagine finding a soulmate and being told you cannot be together. Vicky's book is one I would adopt for a folklore unit in class without hesitation. I wholeheartedly give it a well earned 5 stars." -R. Jones"The illustrations are beautifully done, the story fun and swift. Id love to see more tales like this in this style, with the strong visual storytelling. It's wonderful to see a book like this that also teaches about a culture that not everyone would otherwise have a chance to learn about. 10/10 for me."-Elizabeth Russell

A ghost holds the key to a stolen fortune... Tina is fourteen years old. She is argumentative, surly, disobedient, and hails from a dysfunctional family. She has had various unsuccessful stays in foster care, as her behaviour always remains challenging. When she is moved to Sunrise Court, a children's home, she is soon in trouble for breaking the rules, and is horrified to discover she has to barricade herself into her bedroom every night to evade the wandering hands of a certain member of staff. Devoid of hope for the future, she starts a diary at the beginning of January 1997 as she approaches her fifteenth birthday. Will the New Year will bring an improvement in her situation? 'Tina's Diary: 1997' reached the finals of the 2023 Page Turner Writing Award. Review by D.G Kaye, author of Conflicted HeartsTina is a fifteen year old girl living in an orphanage home. She is an angry and rebellious girl, but very resourceful. She drops out of school but is quite clever and streetwise, and carries a lot of resentment toward her parents for her predicament. Tina's mother was a drug addict and alcoholic who over-dosed when Tina was ten and her philandering father had long gone, and remarried. Tina has an estranged and resentful relationship with her cheating, alcoholic father who typically visits her once a year at Christmas, and occasionally on her birthday, to leave her money and whatever stolen goods he may have acquired that she may be able to use.Tina doesn't like rules and uses her bedroom window to escape out at nights for dates with all the wrong kinds of shady characters. She's also quite clever and learns how to make some spending money on the side, because it's a 'short stint for a decent payoff'.This story begins as a diary of Tina's life in the home, and then all the little plot twists that come along in her life, keep us turning the pages. The author did a marvelous job of writing Tina's story in this epistolary style of writing, and writing from the mind of a lonely, angry, and confused young teenager facing situations and decisions at an age with adult-sized problems. Tina's shenanigans with a twist of paranormal make for an interesting read.

Norma Dunning

Drawing on both lived experience and cultural memory, Norma Dunning brings together six powerful new short stories centred on modern-day Inuk characters in Tainna. Ranging from homeless to extravagantly wealthy, from spiritual to jaded, young to elderly, and even from alive to deceased, Dunning's characters are united by shared feelings of alienation, displacement and loneliness resulting from their experiences in southern Canada. In Tainna--meaning "the unseen ones" and pronounced Da-e-nn-a--a fraught reunion between sisters Sila and Amak ends in an uneasy understanding. From the spirit realm, Chevy Bass watches over his imperilled grandson, Kunak. And in the title story, the broken-hearted Bunny wanders onto a golf course on a freezing night, when a flock of geese stand vigil until her body is discovered by a kind stranger. Norma Dunning's masterful storytelling uses humour and incisive detail to create compelling characters who discover themselves in a hostile land where prejudice, misogyny and inequity are most often found hidden in plain sight. There, they must rely on their wits, artistic talent, senses of humour and spirituality- for survival; and there, too, they find solace in shining moments of reconnection with their families and communities.

When Tanna’s father brings home an abandoned owl, she is not eager to take care of the needy, ugly little bird. Tanna must wake at 4:00 a.m. to catch food for the owl. She must feed it, clean up after it, all while avoiding its sharp, chomping beak and big, stomping talons. After weeks of following her father’s instructions on how to care for the owl, Tanna must leave home for school. Her owl has grown. It has lost its grey baby feathers and is beginning to sprout a beautiful adult snowy owl coat. As she says good-bye to the owl, she is relieved not to have to care for it anymore, but also a bit sad. And the heart of this story is true, even if the things said or done have been switched around a bit.” In this follow-up to the critically acclaimed Tanna’s Owl, Tanna finds a small, grey lemming, far too cute to turn over to the scientist who has sent the children out to gather lemmings for his research. Instead, Tanna deems Fluffi to be a family member and attempts to raise the lemming in her home. But when the lemming strays from its cozy bed behind the stove and into Tanna’s mother’s things, Tanna is forced to consider whether she has really done what is best for Fluffi. Is it possible to treat something poorly by trying to treat it well?
