William Charles Scully (29 October 1855 - 25 August 1943) is one of South Africa's best-known authors, although little known outside South Africa. In addition to his work as an author, his paid work was principally as a magistrate in Springfontein, South Africa, as well as in Namaqualand and the Transkei. His last position before retirement was as Chief Magistrate of Port Elizabeth, one of South Africa's larger cities. He organised the building of "New Brighton," a township for aboriginal African people in Port Elizabeth. At the time it was regarded as very progressive--a pleasant place to live. This book has been deemed as a classic and has stood the test of time. The book has been considered by academicians and scholars of great significance and value to literature. This forms a part of the knowledge base for future generations.

Acknowledgements The work underlying this study was performed at the Econometric and Special Studies Department of the Nederlandsche Bank, where many contributed to it. I am indebted to all the statistical assistants of the department, especially to Anja Wouters and Rob Vet for their patient assistance in building up the data sets and analysing the survey data. Also Corina den Broeder rendered devoted and persistent research assistance with respect to the multicountry analysis during her stay at the Bank and I am grateful to Mike Clements of the Bank of England for his careful reading and commenting on that part. My collegues Peter van Els and Carlo Winder made some valuable suggestions. Liesbeth Klein and Coen Collee helped me avoid a number of errors in English, and thanks to the skilful efforts of Marietta Bakker, Gita Gajapersad and Carolien Verhoeven the text looks as it does. Above all, lowe a debt of gratitude to Martin Fase, one of the pioneers in this field of research, for his efforts and contribution to the improvement of this study. INTRODUCTION We seem to be well on the way to a cashless society. Paradoxically, however, the majority of the transactions are still paid in cash even in the most advanced economies. A second paradoxical observation is that, despite the primary and common character of currency, the economic theory on the use of and demand for cash is only rarely supported by empirical evidence.
Having been on business travels for over 2 decades, I have accumulated several stories and experiences that I have captured on notes scribbled over the years. The non-travelling years of 2020 and 2021 due to Covid-19 have prompted me to reflect on these travels and the stories collected, and I felt this is an opportune time to put these stories and feelings into a book to share with fellow business travellers and with all who miss the magic in business travelling. This book gives a light-hearted read with stories including how to sleep well and stay healthy whilst on the road, travelling alone, sleeping through a hotel fire alarm in London, sharing a hotel room with a stranger in Los Angeles, getting a nasty bout of food poisoning in China, planting a tree in a Brazilian plantation, insightful chats with strangers, scrambling to get an air ticket before Hurricane Rita strikes, going on a bleisure trip with colleagues, various first-time experiences in business travelling, falling into the gap between the train and the platform at London Paddington station, how Covid-19 has turned business travels to virtual meetings, etc. Enjoy the book, and I hope reading it will help you to bring back your own memories of past business travel
The most compelling and exciting tales of lost and buried treasures associated with the Civil War have been collected, extensively researched and investigated, and are included in this entertaining book from one of America's foremost treasure hunters. They represent fortunes that have been lost for over one-and-a-half centuries and involve colorful characters from lowly privates up to famous officers, including Jefferson Davis, the President of the Confederacy. The thirty-one tales in this book provide backstory and pertinent information, are distributed between the Union and Confederate armies, and range from Texas to the Atlantic Cost, from Louisiana to the Canadian border.
