The Changing Nature of the Maine Woods

The Changing Nature of the Maine Woods

The Changing Nature of the Maine Woods is both a fascinating introduction to the forests of Maine and a detailed but accessible narrative of the dynamism of these ecosystems. This is natural history with a long view, starting with an overview of the state's geological history, the reemergence of the forest after glacial retreat, and the surprising changes right up to European arrival. The authors create a vivid picture of Maine forests just before the impact of Euro-Americans and trace the profound transformations since settlement.Ambitious in its geographic range, this book explores how and why Maine forests differ across the state, from the top of Mount Katahdin to the coast. Through groundbreaking research and engaging narratives, the authors assess key ecological forces such as climate change, insects and disease, nonnative organisms, natural disturbance, and changing land use to create a dramatic portrait of Maine forests-past, present, and future. This book both synthesizes the latest scientific discoveries regarding the changing forest and relates the findings to an educated lay and academic audience.

Complete in Him: The Radical Simplicity of Paul's Gospel
The Apostle Paul was given a radical message to deliver to the world. Paul preached that we are brought into possession of everything that God has for us, not by strenuous moral effort, good works, or self-sacrifice, but by simple faith in Christ alone. Furthermore, he taught that we cannot improve upon the finished work of Christ in our lives by ascetic activities such as fasting or other forms of self-denial. As Christians, we are "complete in him," and there is no room for improvement. This book presents a detailed analysis of Colossians 2 and Galatians 3, two important chapters dealing with Christian liberty and grace.

The authors identified disputes among roles, missions, and functions (RMF) that have endured as problems for the U.S. Air Force, factors associated with major RMF changes, and reasons why reform efforts failed. In crafting a framework for analyzing the RMF implications of strategic-level guidance and emerging operational concepts, the authors considered how future leadership choices will influence relative attractiveness of RMF courses of action.

This book explores men's attraction to violent extremist movements and terrorism. Drawing on multi-method, interdisciplinary research, this book explores the centrality of masculinity to violent extremist recruitment narratives across the religious and political spectrum. Chapters examine the intersection of masculinity and violent extremism across a spectrum of movements including: the far right, Islamist organizations, male supremacist groups, and the far left. The book identifies key sites and points at which the construction of masculinity intersects with, stands in contrast to and challenges extremist representations of masculinity. It offers an insight into where the potential appeal of extremist narratives can be challenged most effectively and identifies areas for both policy making and future research.

This compact open access reference delves beyond popular concepts of educated consumers and an informed public by examining the science behind deliberative engagement. Using data from four longitudinal studies, the authors assess public engagement methods in deliberative discussions of ethical, legal, and social issues concerning innovations in nanotechnology. Coverage includes the theoretical origins of the studies, forms of engagement and variations used, and in-depth details on cognitive, affective, and social components that go into the critical thinking process and forming of opinions. Not only are the findings intriguing in and of themselves, but researchers from varied fields will also find them useful in pursuing their own projects. Featured in the coverage: Experimental methods and measures used in relation to specific outcomes.Forms of deliberative engagement affecting objective and subjective knowledge.Effects ofengagement variables on attitude formation, change, and polarization.Tracing the processes leading to policy acceptance and support.Study conclusions and evaluation.Plus supplemental materials giving readers access to full study data. Since public engagement methods are widely regarded as valuable for policy input, planning purposes, and understanding societal processes, Deliberative Engagement with Science stands to have a wide audience among psychologists, researchers, academics, and policymakers, as well as professionals in the corporate sphere and the tech industries.

Robust Computational Techniques for Boundary Layers

Robust Computational Techniques for Boundary Layers

Paul Farrell; Alan Hegarty; John M. Miller; Eugene O'Riordan; Grigory I. Shishkin

CRC Press
2019
nidottu
Current standard numerical methods are of little use in solving mathematical problems involving boundary layers. In Robust Computational Techniques for Boundary Layers, the authors construct numerical methods for solving problems involving differential equations that have non-smooth solutions with singularities related to boundary layers. They present a new numerical technique that provides precise results in the boundary layer regions for the problems discussed in the book. They show that this technique can be adapted in a natural way to a real flow problem, and that it can be used to construct benchmark solutions for comparison with solutions found using other numerical techniques. Focusing on robustness, simplicity, and wide applicability rather than on optimality, Robust Computational Techniques for Boundary Layers provides readers with an understanding of the underlying principles and the essential components needed for the construction of numerical methods for boundary layer problems. It explains the fundamental ideas through physical insight, model problems, and computational experiments and gives details of the linear solvers used in the computations so that readers can implement the methods and reproduce the numerical results.

Second homes are once again a source of political and social contention in rural areas. The British government's decision to reduce Council Tax discounts on second homes in England in April 2004 has caused wide debate in local communities, local authorities, and the media. The debate has not only focused on the vexed Council Tax issue, but on wider rural housing concerns. Questions have been raised as to whether second homes are a major cause of housing affordability problems in rural areas, and whether they lead to the displacement of local people in rural communities. In the face of anecdotal evidence being presented to answer these questions, Second Homes: European Perspectives and UK Policies, offers a more comprehensive analysis of the second homes question as it now exists. This up-to-date and authoritative analysis of second homes draws on the latest research and offers a critical insight into current housing problems in rural communities. Those interested in rural and housing studies will find the book valuable.

Translation is an art as taxing as any of the fine arts practiced by humankind. The translator is caught between the need to render the original in a readable and polished version of the target language and the obligation not to depart too far from the original, which might have fine nuances not easily transferred from one language to another. The problem is so well known that generations of students have given their years to studying languages so as not to lose those drops of the original distillation that are inevitably spilled in the process of transfer. The translator cannot retreat from the confrontation and must do the best he can. In translating Israel W eissbrem's work one is faced with a complicating factor: The author was writing in a language that was in the process of revivification after a long era during which it had been able to cope with the demands made upon its resources. The literary demands up until then were largely of the philosophical and theological order with which the extant lexicographical inventory could cope. Then, in the nineteenth century, belles lettres, poetry, the novel, and the essay made demands that necessitated updating the Hebrew language into a vernacular that could muster an inventory of phrases for every life setting.
