Alex's Dad Goes to Prison

Alex's Dad Goes to Prison

Lorna Brookes; Emily Livsey

WATERSIDE PRESS
2022
nidottu
Alex's Dad Goes to Prison is the first in the new Parent in Prison Series of books for children of imprisoned parents. It portrays the challenges they face and allows them to understand they are not alone. The book seeks to explain in simple terms why the parent was arrested and sent to prison. It describes what happens whilst the parent is in prison (such as visits and letters) and makes suggestions like starting a box in which to keep letters from and photos of the absent parent. The series aims to reduce stigma, feelings of isolation, and to show that children with a parent in prison can thrive. The series is pitched at younger readers and inspired by real life stories and events. Some 312,000 children have a parent in prison in the UK alone (2022) many of whom fall within the target age range (below) of this book. The figure is one in every 100 across Europe, millions of children worldwide, giving this vividly illustrated and attractively written work considerable potential.

On 6 September 2007, an African Grey Parrot named Alex died prematurely at 31. His last words to his owner, Irene Pepperberg, were ‘You be good. I love you.’ Alex & Me is the remarkable true account of an extraordinary relationship between Irene and Alex — a relationship that disproved the widely accepted idea that birds possess no potential for language or anything comparable to human intelligence. In the thirty years he spent with Irene, Alex demonstrated an incredible ability to communicate and understand complex ideas. Yet this is much more than the story of a scientific breakthrough. Alex and Irene were emotionally connected: he missed her when she was away; he was jealous when she paid attention to others; and, nearly every day, they each said,‘I love you.’ Astonishing, moving, and unforgettable, Alex & Me is a powerful reminder of the bond that can exist between humans and animals.

Alex Webb & Rebecca Norris Webb: Memory City
"A meditation on working with photographic film in the former center of the imaging universe” —James Estrin, The New York Times Located in Rochester, New York, Eastman Kodak was one of the world’s leading manufacturers of photographic film for 125 years. Following the company’s declaration of bankruptcy in 2012, photographers Alex Webb (born 1952) and Rebecca Norris Webb (born 1956) traveled to Rochester to capture images of the city during the twilight of Kodak’s existence. Memory City responds to the uncertain future of Kodak film as a medium by presenting a view of Rochester that reflects the city’s prosperous past and current troubles. Usually known for his color work, for this project Alex Webb used his final rolls of Kodachrome--a color film now only able to be processed in black and white--to capture Rochester’s fading grandeur. He also photographed the city’s streets in digital color. Rebecca’s photographs consist of color portraits and still-lifes of Rochester’s women, both young and old, taken using Portra--one of Kodak’s last films. For this publication, the artists have also created a timeline of Rochester’s cultural history, tracing the evolution of the complex, once-vibrant city. This book also contains quotations from many of the famous writers and thinkers who have been connected to Rochester and its environs, including women’s rights activist Susan B. Anthony, abolitionist Frederick Douglass, and poets John Ashbery and Ilya Kaminsky.
Alex Israel - Self-Portraits
Alex lsrael’s (born 1982) series of Self-Portraits were developed through the evolution of a logo based on the artist's profile—an iconic representation of facial features that calls to mind the famous silhouette of Alfred Hitchcock—originally created for the video piece As It Lays, a beguiling and campy work of talk show–style interviews for which Israel cast himself as host, presented at Reena Spaulings' New York gallery in March 2012. Made with the same techniques used for manufacturing surfboards, and produced at the Warner Bros. Studios in Burbank, the sculptures, through the very process of their production, reflect on the context of Los Angeles, the culture of hedonism and the cult of personality from which they spring.
Alex Webb & Rebecca Norris Webb: Waves
A pandemic logbook in words and images, with gorgeous Cape Cod panoramas and poetical meditations “Far from the vibrant urban worlds where I’ve often photographed, I followed the subtle movements of time and tide, wind and water. Meanwhile, Rebecca photographed the waves of light as they washed through our house of many windows—and wrote spare text pieces to try to emotionally navigate this unsettling time, when so many we know have been caught in its undertow.” –Alex Webb, May 2021 Inspired by Virginia Woolf’s novel The Waves, this collaborative project brings together the work of creative partners Alex Webb and Rebecca Norris Webb. This intimate collection serves as a pandemic logbook in words and images, created while the couple was largely sequestered on Cape Cod from March 2020 through May 2021. Rebecca provides original, handwritten poetry that punctuates her lyrical photographs and Alex’s panoramic seascapes. Their images serve as poignant meditations on what it means to be both deeply connected to the world around us and profoundly isolated from much that we hold dear. Alex Webb (born 1952) has published more than 15 photography books, including the survey The Suffering of Light. His most recent books include La Calle: Photographs from Mexico and the collaboration Brooklyn: The City Within, with Rebecca Norris Webb. Originally a poet, Rebecca Norris Webb (born 1956) often interweaves her text and photographs in her nine books, most notably with her monograph, My Dakota. Her most recent book, Night Calls, was published by Radius Books in 2020.

Alex Katz: Beauty
Elegant monochrome glamour in Katz's new print series This handsome clothbound catalog gathers Alex Katz’s recent titular print portfolio. The series of 25 prints features close-up, black-and-white portraits that remove the subjects from any contextual backdrop, emphasizing instead subtle shifts in expression. Rendered in bold lineation and tightly framed, the women depicted recall the models and celebrities featured in mid-20th-century fashion imagery, underscoring Katz’s ongoing fascination with perceptions of beauty and glamour that permeate the public sphere. The portraits are bookended by a pair of meditations on beauty: Carter Ratcliff imagines a comedically philosophical dialogue between himself and beauty, and Jarrett Earnest shares 31 encounters with beauty in art and life. Alex Katz (born 1927) is one of America’s most iconic and prolific artists. His work has been the subject of more than 250 solo exhibitions and 500 group exhibitions since 1951 and can be found in over 100 public collections worldwide. Katz is best known for his large-scale canvases of flatly rendered figures cast against a monochrome background.
