Public Health and Primary Care

Public Health and Primary Care

Alison Hill; Siân Griffiths; Stephen Gillam

Oxford University Press
2007
nidottu
This book is written for people working in primary care, who want to understand more about how they contribute to improving the health and health care of the populations that they serve, and for people working in public health, who want to understand the essential contribution of primary care to improving health. It sets out the nature, purpose and relevance of public health approaches to primary care practitioners and primary care organisations. Primary care teams have had a long established role in public health, providing preventive services to populations, through the registered population in general practice. This model of a registered practice population has withstood multiple reconfigurations and reorganisations within the NHS and is the envy of many countries trying to create a public health system with primary care at its heart. There are clear differences in approach, with the inevitable conflicts between the rights of the individual set against the responsibility to ensure services are delivered fairly and equitably to whole populations. This book explores this dilemma, showing how people working in primary care can cross the divide to become part of the public health system, and in doing so are well placed to make a difference to the health of their populations.
Circular Dichroism and Linear Dichroism

Circular Dichroism and Linear Dichroism

Alison Rodger; Bengt Nordén

Oxford University Press
1997
sidottu
The aim of this book is to provide an introduction to all those who wish to use the complementary spectroscopic techniques of optical activity (circular dichroism, CD) and optical anisotropy (linear dichroism, LD) for the study of the structure of molecules and interactions between molecules in solution. The emphasis of the book is on what the techniques are and how to use them for both low and high molecular weight molecules. It is intended to be an easy guide to what a prospective user of CD needs to know and explains how LD is not merely an exotic technique only to be practised by experienced spectroscopists, but may be routinely and usefully employed as an aid to molecular structure determination. Circular Dichroism and Linear Dichroism is the first book that is an easy, directly applicable manual to the use and interpretation of both CD and LD. It will be of use to both novices and experienced researchers in the field.
Networking the Nation

Networking the Nation

How did nineteenth-century women's poetry shift from the poetess poetry of lyric effusion and hyper-femininity to the muscular epic of Elizabeth Barrett Browning's Aurora Leigh? Networking the Nation re-writes women's poetic traditions by demonstrating the debt that Barrett Browning's revolutionary poetics owed to a circle of American and British women poets living in Florence and campaigning in their poetry and in their salons for Italian Unification. These women poets--Isa Blagden, Elizabeth Kinney, Eliza Ogilvy, and Theodosia Garrow Trollope--formed with Barrett Browning a network of poetry, sociability, and politics, which was devoted to the mission of campaigning for Italy as an independent nation state. In their poetic experiments with the active lyric voice, in their forging of a transnational persona through the periodical press, in their salons and spiritualist séances, the women poets formed a network that attempted to assert and perform an independent unified Italy in their work. Networking the Nation maps the careers of these expatriate women poets who were based in Florence in the key years of Risorgimento politics, racing their transnational social and print communities, and the problematic but schismatic shift in their poetry from the conventional sphere of the poetess. In the fraught and thrilling engagement with their adopted nation's revolutionary turmoil, and in their experiments with different types of writing agency, the women poets in this book offer revolutions of other kinds: revolutions of women's poetry and the very act of writing.
Trade Marks and Competition Law

Trade Marks and Competition Law

Alison Firth; Spyros Maniatis; Ioannis Kokkoris; Noam Shemtov; Apostolos Chronopoulos

Oxford University Press

This book provides a critical analysis of the interface between trade mark law and competition law through a combination of practice, doctrine, and policy. The two legal regimes are at opposite ends of the scale, with one promoting monopoly and the other competition; they operate at parallel levels, often without regard for the objectives and regulatory tools of the other. However, an increasing number of cases from the European Union (EU) and beyond cover the intersection of the two regimes. This book highlights the ways in which the fundamentals of trade mark law are being challenged from a competition law perspective, and how trade mark principles affect the development and application of competition law. It provides a detailed overview of jurisprudence from Europe, the United States, and Australia, adopting a comparative approach. The book explores three practical areas. Firstly, it considers the jurisprudence on how trade mark law internalises competition considerations. Secondly, it examines how competition law internalises trade mark considerations. Thirdly, it looks at the hierarchy of the direct relationship between trade mark law as a set of exclusionary rules that lead to market power on one hand and competition law as a set of rules targeting market power and its abuse on the other. The book then focuses on identifying and 'codifying' the judicial toolkit developed by the courts in all of these, and positions this against a theoretical justificatory background. Finally, it tests the sustainability of the toolkit against the 'competition plus' context and provides an appropriate policy framework for the balancing between trade mark rights and competition rules.
Kant's Transcendental Deduction

Kant's Transcendental Deduction

Alison Laywine

Oxford University Press
2020
sidottu
In this book, Alison Laywine takes up the mystery of the Transcendental Deduction in Immanuel Kant's Critique of Pure Reason. What is it supposed to accomplish and how? She collects evidence from the Critique and his other writings to determine what Kant took himself to be doing on his own terms and argues that he deliberately adapted elements of his early metaphysics both to set the agenda of the Deduction and to carry it out. She shows that the most important metaphysical element Kant repurposed for the Deduction was his early account of a world: he had argued that a world is not just the sum-total of all substances created by God, but a whole unified by God's universal laws of community that externally relate any given substance to all others. From this conception of a world, Kant then extracted a distinctive way to conceive key elements in the Deduction: experience is thus the whole of all possible appearances unified by the universal laws human understanding gives to nature. This cosmological conception of experience drives the Deduction.
Homes and Haunts

Homes and Haunts

Alison Booth

Oxford University Press
2016
sidottu
This is the first full-length study of literary tourism in North America as well as Britain, and a unique exploration of popular response to writers, literary house museums, and the landscapes or "countries " associated with their lives and works. An interdisciplinary study ranging from 1820-1940, Homes and Haunts: Touring Writers' Shrines and Countries unites museum and tourism studies, book history, narrative theory, theories of gender, space, and things, and other approaches to depict and interpret the haunting experiences of exhibited houses and the curious history of topo-biographical writing about famous authors. In illustrated chapters that blend Victorian and recent first-person encounters that range from literary shrines and plaques to guidebooks, memoirs, portraits, and monuments, Alison Booth discusses pilgrims such as William and Mary Howitt, Anna Maria and Samuel Hall, and Elbert Hubbard, and magnetic hosts and guests as Washington Irving, Wordsworth, Martineau, Longfellow, Hawthorne, James, and Dickens. Virginia Woolf's feminist response to homes and haunts shapes a chapter on Mary Russell Mitford, Gaskell, and the Brontës, and another on the Carlyles' house and Monk's House. Booth rediscovers collections of personalities, haunted shrines, and imaginative re-enactments that have been submerged by a century of academic literary criticism.
