Kit Carson and the First Battle of Adobe Walls

Kit Carson and the First Battle of Adobe Walls

On a late November morning in 1864, Col. Kit Carson and his U.S. troops, under orders from the commander of the New Mexico Military Department, attacked Kiowa Chief Doh?san’s winter village in the Texas Panhandle. Warriors retaliated with stiff resistance as their women and children escaped. Fighting proceeded down the Canadian River to the abandoned trading post of Adobe Walls as hundreds more Kiowas and Comanches joined the battle. Nearing sunset, Carson’s troops burned Doh?san’s village, and although remarkably few lives were lost in the battle itself, the enduring consequences were hardly insignificant.Well-known as an explorer, guide, and frontiersman, Carson’s involvement at the First Battle of Adobe Walls has been overlooked. Beginning his research in the 1990s, Alvin Lynn set out to fill that void when he located and walked the 200-mile-long wagon road from Fort Bascom to Adobe Walls and collected 1,800 metal artifacts from 15 historic camps, including the burned Kiowa village. Among the recovered artifacts were fired friction primers verifying the placement of howitzers at the battle site. With nearly eighty battle site and artifact photographs taken by renowned photographer Wyman Meinzer, Kit Carson and the First Battle of Adobe Walls documents Carson’s military expedition from Fort Bascom to Adobe Walls and Lynn’s own journey more than a century later to discover what really happened.

This book addresses two common problems encountered by emergency services personnel: the design and implementation of evacuation warning systems to ensure citizen compliance with the directives of authorities and the permanent relocation of families threatened by hazards. The authors pay particular attention to the problems of constructing warning messages; to the citizen's interpretation of message content; the techniques of delivering warning messages; and the management of citizen movements out of threatened areas. Administrative issues related to variations in compliance among ethnic groups are also noted. In the second section, the authors explore the social psychological impact and the logistical, administrative, public policy, and political aspects of relocation. They elaborate a series of principles of positive relocation general enough to apply to a variety of relocation situations.

Managers in developing countries, whether operating in the private or public sectors, are constantly aware of the problems of underdevelopment. Effective management of international business activities in developing countries can improve the competitiveness and development prospects of these countries and, in turn, the companies operating within them. But to do so, managers need a developing country perspective on international trade agreements, international finance, foreign exchange, and national financial management. These topics, as well as practical chapters on the management of export production, financing exports, government export programs, and international investment make this very valuable reading for executives and those interested in international business.

Here are Alvin Greenberg's poems of experience, his grown man's tribute to negative capability. He knows we live in a world of indeterminacy, with our various ignorances and failures of language. Yet without prettying-up these conditions, his Hurry Back offers an unsentimental, clear-eyed paean to them, a kind of "elegiac lean-to / set right out in the weather because the weather's / what there is and where we do our loving".Though such sagacity pervades this book, these are not poems of resignation. Greenberg knows the birds on the highway "almost always fly up in time," but he's not going to let that "almost" stop him from driving a little over the speed limit.

The reader is invited into an exploration of the biblical text through the perspective of the prophetic. The author contends that the radical challenges of the prophetic are essential attributes of the biblical text which offers us profound possibilities for faithful living. It is through the lens of the prophetic where the American church in general, and the African American church in particular, can regain its focus for relevant proclamation and ministry. Begining with the Exodus story, Bernstine invites us to ponder the prophetic roots of the Judeo-Christian faith as he explores the various genres of the biblical text with a sensitivity to the Christian year. His commitment to include the influences of Judaism, Jesus's primary faith community, nuances the readings with radical freshness.
The Evening and The Morning: A Liberation Primer On The Creation Story
The evening and the morning represents a liturgical cadence that re-shaped the story of beginnings for a people who needed them. Exploring the Jewish perspective on the Creation Story, a hermeneutical lens is provided that gives powerful insight to what a people of faith can do to re-story a faith of resistance. Departing from the traditional evangelical understanding the Creation Story, the author follow its origin into one of the defining experiences of Jewish faith - the Exile. Exile defines and shapes the Hebrew Bible, and what evangelical Christians call the Old Testament. This is a concept that many of us chose to ignore, even while being exposes to it early our educational experiences. During this dark episode of debilitating oppression, the composers of the Creation Story redefined their reality by presenting a God who creates from the darkness, in opposition to the emptiness, and in spite of the chaos. The evening metaphorically serves as the acknowledgement of the darkness, while the morning provides the metaphor of hope of a new day. Each day, with the exception of the seventh day, addresses a dimension of the oppressive evening with the creative hope of the morning. The book is broken up into three sections, Chapters 1 through 3 are foundational, beginning with the fact that Hermeneutics Matter, secondly The Creation Story Matters, and thirdly, The Evening and The Morning Matters. The foundational chapters are used to shape a liberatory hermenutic and lens. Once the foundation has been establish, each day is presented as a homilietical response to the liberatory hermeneutic. From the perspective of the exilic experience of an African American, each day is shaped by the hermeneutical lens and questions are offered for personal thought and/or group discussions.
