America's research universities--some fifty leading intellectual centers--have assumed a unique set of responsibilities. In addition to educating undergraduates, they house most of the nation's basic research and train virtually all new scientists and scholars. The health of these institutions is critical to the nation's intellectual life as well as to its economic well-being, military posture, and foreign policy. Robert Rosenzweig, reporting on a project sponsored by the Association of American Universities, examines the core functions of the research universities and explores how they might best relate to their powerful patrons: the national government, foundations, business, and industry.

When Was it I Dared to Dream: The Journey of a soul incarnate

In July of 1949, Barbara Lee Duffy was struck down by Polio at the age of ten, paralyzed from her chin to her toes. Before that, she was an unhappy child, fearful of her mother's dismissive attitude and bouts of anger, her sister's fits of bullying and rage, harassment by the Nuns at Saint Pat's grammar school and a dirty old uncle groping under her skirt. She was also bothered by other things, like the sign in front of the U.S. Post Office that said, "KEEP OFF THE GRASS." "If I have to keep off of it, then what is it for," she ruminated? She despised being excluded from anything she might enjoy. She saw herself as two girls-the oppressed, bullied and rejected girl of yesterday and the new-world girl of today, who lay encased in an iron lung for eight months, surrounded by caring and indulgent Doctors, Nurses and Physical Therapists who actually liked her. She quickly learned how to keep the "old girl" stuffed down deep, so no one could find any reason to reject her. She learned how to quietly observe and comment to herself about what she liked and disliked about the people and things around her. She needed to stay quiet and focused about what could be mended on her body and what could not. She knew that her full participation in the treatments, was essential in her recovery, but there were other problems requiring solutions that she also had to grapple with-fears, anxiety, sexual identity problems, dealing with people in authority (especially self-assumed authority) who fought against the creative and life enhancing goals that she set for herself-like where and how she lived, who she loved, her educational and work goals, all taking place during that fantastic journey of her soul incarnate and with all the odds on earth against her, she did the one thing they said she would NEVER do. She did what they all said was impossible.

Education / Career and Personal Development The Woman’s Guide to Navigating the Ph.D in Engineering & Science "The Ph.D. is a challenging and tough endeavor for everyone because of the exploration into uncharted places of knowledge. There is no other instance in which one can feel quite the same ‘intellectual high’ and sense of accomplishment that one’s own Ph.D. work gives, so it is important to understand and learn to navigate the process." —Indira Nair Vice Provost for Education and Associate Professor of Engineering and Public Policy Carnegie Mellon University Designed to unravel some of the mystery around graduate school programs in science and engineering, this one-stop resource reinforces strategies for succeeding in graduate school. An Emergence Approach to Speech Acquisition

An Emergence Approach to Speech Acquisition

Barbara L. Davis; Lisa M. Bedore

Psychology Press

The central assertion in this volume is that the young child uses general skills, scaffolded by adults, to acquire the complex knowledge of sound patterns and the goal-directed behaviors for communicating ideas through language and producing speech. A child’s acquisition of phonology is seen as a product of her physical and social interaction capacities supported by input from adult models about ambient language sound patterns. Acquisition of phonological knowledge and behavior is a product of this function-oriented complex system. No pre-existing mental knowledge base is necessary for acquiring phonology in this view. Importantly, the child’s diverse abilities are used for many other functions as well as phonological acquisition.Throughout, an evaluation is made of the research on patterns of typical development across languages in monolingual and bilingual children and children with speech impairments affecting various aspects of their developing complex system. Also considered is the status of available theoretical perspectives on phonological acquisition relative to an emergence proposal, and contributions that this perspective could make to more comprehensive modeling of the nature of phonological acquisition are proposed. The volume will be of interest to cognitive psychologists, linguistics, and speech pathologists.

Developing Grounded Theory: The Second Generation Revisited is a highly accessible description of the rapid development of grounded theories and the latest developments in grounded theory methods.A succinct overview of the development of grounded theory is provided, including the similarities and differences between Glaserian and Straussian grounded theory. The method introduced by Schatzman, and the development of Charmaz’s constructivist grounded theory and Clarke’s situational analysis, are clearly presented. The book is divided into seven sections: each type of grounded theory is discussed by the developer (or their student), followed by a chapter describing a project that used that particular type of grounded theory. Bookending these chapters is the first chapter, which describes the development and landscape of grounded theory, and a final chapter describing the challenges to the future of grounded theory. This book is ideally suited for beginning students trying to come to grips with the field as well as more advanced researchers attempting to delineate the major types of grounded theory.

Today’s public schools represent a demographic of students that are more diverse than ever before. In turn, culturally responsive and affirming teaching practices should mirror the academic, social, and cultural needs of an ever-increasing population of diverse students. Through multicultural education students can discover the ways they are shaped by their own culture, as well as learn more about others. Multicultural education practices provide mutually beneficial dialogue between cultures, and the pedagogical practices increase learning outcomes for not just the ethnically and racially diverse, but all students who are participatory in the content. This book provides educational stakeholders with culturally relevant and affirming techniques for utilizing multicultural literature as a pedagogical tool in social studies, mathematics, science, and reading. Each chapter provides a brief summary about the selected multicultural text and also contains an instructional strategy to be used. Following this, an inquiry-based lesson is provided with supplementary materials and resources that allow for K-12 differentiation.
