Devil's Own Luck: Pegasus Bridge to the Baltic 1944-45
Although strictly forbidden to keep diaries, Denis Edwards managed to record his experiences throughout nearly all his time in Europe in 1944-45. He brilliantly conveys what it was like to be facing death, day after day, night after night, with never a bed to sleep in nor a hot meal to go home to. This is warfare in the raw ' brutal, yet humorous, immensely tragic, but sadly, all true.
Bridges to Spiritual Insight: Understanding the Parable's Miraculous Work
The parable of the sower, of the mustard seed, of the pearl of great price, of the talents, of the lost sheep, of the tares, and so many more are stories that place visual images of people, places, things, and events in our minds. Jesus purposefully told these tales to give us the ability to understand spiritual truth by placing those images in our minds. These word pictures give us the framework that holds all the myriad detail of truth given to us in the Word of God. Without them our minds could not grasp or properly place those many statements of truth. The ineptitude of the carnal mind to comprehend spiritual truth is clearly stated in I Corinthians: "But the natural man receiveth not the things of the Spirit of God: for they are foolishness unto him: neither can he know them, because they are spiritually discerned." (I Corinthians 2: 14)Parables are the bridge between the natural mind and spiritual truth. Yet, there is effort required on our part to cross that bridge. This effort is the first step in determining if the parable will have its intended affect on us as it is read. Simply, we must care. The desire to understand is a prerequisite to receiving the revelation that the parabolic teaching is designed to facilitate. If the desire is not within us, then the mystery of the parable will remain veiled. However, one of the parable's purposes is still served, as our lack of spiritual hunger has been judged by it. Our spiritual growth, therefore, is stunted; or worse yet, our spiritual birth is aborted. Indeed, our spiritual lives are dependent on our understanding concepts, which the natural man cannot grasp. The parables of the Bible, however, are not there to condemn us, but rather to reveal the wonderful mysteries of the Kingdom of God, including our entrance into it... "...except a man be born again he cannot see the kingdom of God." (John 3: 3)We see then, the parables both conceal the truth and reveal the truth, as stated by Jesus in His response to the disciples' question of why He taught in parables."Because it is given unto you to know the mysteries of the kingdom of heaven, but to them it is not given. For whosoever hath, to him shall be given, and he shall have more abundance: but whosoever hath not, from him shall be taken away even that he hath." (Matthew 13: 11)As the mysteries are revealed the unity of the Kingdom is evidenced because we all have put away our private interpretations of the scripture and understand it through the eyes of the concepts laid forth in the parable. Even the concepts of the Lord Himself. The wonderful visuals afforded us by the parabolic teaching method of Jesus (and indeed of the whole Bible) are our bridges to the awesome mysteries of the Kingdom of God. The parable is intended to bring revelation of those Kingdom mysteries to us. It is my prayer that you hunger for the true manna... the hidden manna that God is eagerly waiting for you to receive.
Rebecca Bridges Amateur Sleuth: Margie's Mysterious Masterpiece (Case #7)
Rebecca, her friends, and her father, William, accompany Margie Johnson to her home in Minnesota. They had been asked to help her sort, pack, and move back to Fremont to live with her sister, Annie Owens, Rebecca's neighbor. During the flight to Denver, Margie invites Rebecca to search for hidden compartments in an antique secretary her husband Ben had purchased shortly before his death.Upon arrival at Margie's home, the group is quickly engaged in the task of sorting and packing. By the end of the day, they managed to make their way to the back of the garage where the lofty, secretary had stood for the past three years. Rebecca wanted to begin examining the masterpiece immediately, but the hour was late, and they were all very tired. However, when Margie informed Rebecca, her father, and the others, of the potential value of the desk, interest was piqued. The crew settled around William as he searched the internet via his laptop.Unbeknownst to Margie, her realtor had told several people of the beautiful antiques that Margie owned and would be selling at a yard sale prior to her move. The realtor had given the impression that Margie could be enticed to sell some valuable pieces that she planned to keep. Word spread and during the first night of their stay at Margie's, Rebecca noticed would-be burglars prowling around Margie's garage, as she peered out the upstairs window. The police were summoned, a shot was fired by one of the perpetrators, and the hunt was on. The police caught the perps shortly thereafter. Rather than take all the blame for their actions, they related a complicated set of events that resulted in their attempt to steal Margie's antiques. With the help of police officers on patrol, and the teamwork of Rebecca and her friends, Margie's antiques were safe from another attempted burglary. Margie held her sale early in the morning on the scheduled day and quickly sold out. They were enabled to start the trip to Fremont a day ahead of schedule. The road trip was exhausting and filled with some fun, and some not-so-fun experiences. The blooming romances between Rebecca and Lucas, and Adam and Carrie, continue to deepen. The kids think they are hiding their feelings very well from their parents, but Margie informs Rebecca that their parents already know. Rebecca is stymied because she thought they had all been so careful.Upon arriving home to Fremont, the masterpiece is unloaded into the Bridgeses' garage. Rebecca begins immediately to try and find a hidden compartment before going to bed. Her parents join the search and what they find will change Margie's life forever
