`She thought that it was precisely when things get uncomfortable or can't be shown that something interesting comes to light. That is the point of no return, the point that must be reached, the point you reach after crossing the border of what has already been said, what has already been seen. It's cold out there.'This hybrid novel-part research notes, part fictionalised diary, and part travelogue-uses the stories of polar exploration to make sense of the protagonist's own concerns as she comes of age as an artist, a daughter, and a sister to an autistic brother. Conceptual and emotionally compelling, it advances fearlessly into the frozen emotional lacunae of difficult family relationships. Deserving winner of multiple awards upon its Catalan and Spanish publication, Brother in Ice is a richly rewarding journey into the unknown.

History has been full of battles, wars, and times of upheaval that lead to greater struggles. What if we were to look at these events as crime scenes, in which murder takes place at an extreme level? If we were to examine each crime scene, we would find two persons of interest who would bear closer attention. These persons of interest are Pluto, Lord of the Underworld, and Eris, Lady of Discord. Today, we know them only as dwarf planets, far out at the edge of the solar system. Yet, by observing their orbits and aspects, we can see that they appear at the crime scenes of the most violent events of history. When there have been cooperative aspects between these two dwarf planets, that was when the biggest struggles have taken place, such as World War II, the Taiping Rebellion, and the Thirty Years War. Challenging aspects between the dwarf planets have shown confused fighting, lopsided victories, and achievements which seem good at the time but which bring disaster later on. Conjunctions between these bodies can be a time of treachery, leading to a collapse of international power. This book examines 800 years of major aspects between these two bodies. Their appearances at times of trouble are well-documented. Astrological charts for the events provide snapshots of the crime scenes, with these bodies making a connection. There are also charts for historical figures taking part in these upheavals, with descriptions of how the dwarf planet transits were aspecting their natal charts. Thomas Canfield has previously examined the role of dwarf planet Eris in his book "Yankee Doodle Discord: A Walk with Planet Eris through USA History." His book explained the idea of the Eris Frenemy Principle, in which the most discord takes place when Eris is in cooperative aspects. In his work with historical events, he has found that connections between Eris and Pluto mark the most destructive times between nations or within nations. "Brother Pluto, Sister Eris" is an expansion upon this theme, showing how the cycles of the dwarf planets match the most violent cycles with humanity. Can future generations resist these cycles of violence, or will survival depend upon moving to the most neutral spot and then waiting out the conflict?

""Brother Death" is perhaps John Lodwick's most original and ambitious thriller, combining the moral questioning of Graham Greene with the edge-of-your-seat suspense of Geoffrey Household or Hitchcock." - Michael Moorcock "Mr. Lodwick writes with great accomplishment, softening his brutalities with a sardonic humour." - Lionel Hale, "Observer" "Mr. Lodwick is a clever writer who goes all out to be tough. It should gratify him to hear that this reviewer thinks "Brother Death" a perfectly horrid book, for he can hardly have meant it to be anything else.... there is no denying that Mr. Lodwick's style is admirable, that he can make a point with the minimum of words and can be very good company." - "Guardian" " O]ne of the wittiest and most original talents of his generation." - Peter Green, "Telegraph" "Mr. Lodwick is one of the few true craftsmen writing in English." - "The Observer" "John Lodwick has a richness of invention and a command of words equal to Evelyn Waugh." - "Daily Herald" Eric Rumbold is a mercenary adventurer, adrift in the back streets of Marseilles, where he makes a precarious living as a counterfeiter and black marketeer. Totally lacking either principles or moral scruples, Rumbold had been a top spy, saboteur, and killer for the British during the war but finds his talents of little use in peacetime. When the alluring Fiona Lampeter meets Rumbold, she knows she's found the man she's been looking for. Her young son stands in the way of her inheriting the family fortune: she wants the boy dead and is willing to make the job well worth Rumbold's while. Drawn into the Lampeter family's web of intrigue and deceit, Rumbold lays the plans for the horrific and cold-blooded murder of an innocent child ... and in the novel's unforgettable climax, at least one of them will make the acquaintance of Brother Death. One of the best selling authors of his day, John Lodwick's novels were characterized by their fast pace, sardonic humour, and brilliant prose. Admired by Somerset Maugham, John Betjeman, and Anthony Burgess, and often compared with Graham Greene and Evelyn Waugh, Lodwick fell into obscurity after his death in a car crash in 1959 at age 43. This edition of "Brother Death" (1948) is the first republication of any of his works since his death and includes a new introduction by Chris Petit.

Brother: A Story of Autism

Brother: A Story of Autism

Carlton Hudgens

Bridget and Carlton are as close as any sister and brother. But their relationship is particularly special. Carlton has autism and is almost completely nonverbal. He's smart, funny, creative, and loving. He has immense challenges in speaking full sentences. Bridget's fierce loyalty to and compassion for her brother led to an unbreakable bond that has helped the siblings cope with divorce and homelessness. Carlton's devotion to his family is loud and clear, even in his silence. Carlton Hudgens was diagnosed with autism spectrum disorder at three years old. He didn't speak or interact with the world around him, except with humming and flapping arms. The diagnosis provided a label, but not an answer. He was considered low-functioning, but all that meant was that there was a laundry list of tasks he couldn't do, and little recognition of what he could. Carlton's sister, Bridget, just a year younger, became his protector, sharing their birthdays so that he could open the presents first, taking the blame for a broken toy to spare him from being punished on Christmas Day. She understood that she was living in Carlton's world, not the other way around. Because Carlton doesn't speak in full sentences, Bridget has opted to tell his story. "My brother is brilliant in every way," Bridget says. "He just doesn't speak like we speak." When Carlton was five years old, he uttered his first words: "I love you, Mom " Bridget was elated. That sentence meant that he could hear her, that he could speak, and that she had a chance to reach her ultimate goal of bonding with her brother. Bridget was his protector, but Carlton became Bridget's savior. When Bridget was eleven years old, she and Carlton went to the public pool. Carlton was a natural swimmer, but Bridget couldn't swim at all. As the two played a game in the shallow end, they drifted closer to the deep end. Bridget panicked, swallowing water and crying for help. Carlton swam to her and pulled her to safety. No longer was he different, with special needs, or "that kid with autism." To Bridget, he was the big brother who had just saved her. Later on, he became a savior to others. Autism didn't stop him feeling compassion and love. It just made it harder for him to express those emotions. Their parents' divorce and the subsequent remarriage of their mother created a more stable life for Carlton, but Bridget had a hard time accepting the good changes. She had put herself second for so long, it was difficult to allow an adult to take over the care of her brother. By early adulthood, Bridget began to realize that the most fulfilling part of her life was forming a deeper connection with Carlton--an unbreakable bond that would shape brother and sister for the rest of their lives. It was Carlton's influence that led to her passion for helping others with special needs.
