Author's Notes: This evil table IS REAL. IT can be found in Parinacota, Chile inside the tiny village's adobe church. Still today, the people who live in Parinacota keep the little wooden table chained to the altar so that it cannot roam the streets and steal souls. The picture on the back cover is the ACTUAL table and the church that houses it today. When I was looking for a story to write, I was inside the church of Paranicota with my family. We asked the church-keeper why the ugly, old table was chained. The old man replied, "The table, it is evil, it drags itself down the street and next morning someone inside the house is dead." I became interested in why the table why was evil and since when. No one from the little village knew the answer. Hence, I created that story. I started in modern day, and somehow ended up back in time, in 1712. I love the bygone days of tall ships so I got the idea and my ship was created. Now I needed a name for her and had already decided that it would also be the name of my novel. She was a carrack, grand and majestic, built in 1683. I searched the web to find what astronomic discovery was made that year: Stellar Wind is what I found. (Stellar wind is a flow of gas ejected from the upper atmosphere of a star). To be as accurate as possible, I studied what sailors and people wore and ate back then, which ports were friendly, what was traded IN to and from the different ports, where pirates normally raided ships and their pirate lingo. It was important to know religious customs and where natives were uprising against the white man. The Mayans are weaved into the story along with Pacal Votan, the Long Count Calendar, the Dying World of the Fourth Sun, the different tribes in South America and more. This research was not only fun for me but also very enlightening. I hope that you enjoy Stellar Wind's adventure as much as I enjoyed writing it.
What is your plan for the end of the world as we know it? How will you protect the people you love? What will you leave to them when you are gone? The good news is this is not the first time the world has ended. What's more, men were made for times like these. And the men of the past--the good ones, anyway--have left us a plan to follow. They built houses to last--houses that could weather a storm. This book contains their plan. "With wit and flair and a manly willingness to face the facts of life, Wiley shows us how to have a real household rather than a chilly wayside inn, and how to help build again the real local communities that require such households for their existence. Without a recovery of manhood, it is not going to happen. Pastors, this book is for you, too." --Anthony Esolen, Providence College; author of Out of the Ashes: Reclaiming American Culture, and Real Music: The Timeless Hymns of the Church C. R. Wiley is the Senior Pastor of the Presbyterian Church of Manchester in Manchester, Connecticut. He has written for Touchstone Magazine, Modern Reformation, Sacred Architecture, The Imaginative Conservative, and Front Porch Republic. He blogs for Patheos on the Evangelical Channel. His short fiction has appeared in The Mythic Circle (published by the Mythopoeic Society) and he has published young adult fiction. A Rose Croix Oratory offers a comprehensive, powerful, and transformative system of self-directed inner work, drawing deeply from the waters of the Rosicrucian stream with its currents of Christian esotericism, Cabala, Magic, Hermeticism, Alchemy, and compassionate service to others. Combining his many decades of experience practicing and teaching contemplative and inner work with the fruits of his personal explorations, C.R. "Chuck" Dunning, Jr. provides a unique, insightful, and captivating journey through the history, symbolism, and philosophy of Rosicrucianism, particularly through the lens of the Scottish Rite Rose Croix degree. This book is a precious resource of inspiration and instruction, not only for those just beginning to sense their connection to the Rose and the Cross, but also the most experienced travelers through these sublime mysteries."In A Rose Croix Oratory, Dunning explores the nexus between Rosicrucianism and the Masonic Rose Croix Degree. But he does far more than this: he provides a complete primer for understanding the essential history, symbols, principles, teachings, and objectives of Rosicrucianism in a fresh, holistic manner that seeks to inspire readers to go beyond merely sitting in lodge and attending meetings. The meditations, exercises, and rituals make A Rose Croix Oratory a valuable textbook for Rosicrucian self-initiation. This is a spiritual manual for those seeking to truly live a Rosicrucian life." Chic Cicero and Sandra Tabatha Cicero, authors of Self-Initiation into the Golden Dawn Tradition and The Essential Golden Dawn"Rarely does a book deserve to be called an instant classic. A Rose Croix Oratory is one of the very few books I've seen recently that deserves that title. Using the Rosicrucian tradition as a bridge, it unites the worlds of Christian esotericism and Masonic teaching in an extraordinary synthesis complete with a richly developed system of inner psychospiritual practice. It will be of compelling interest to any student of the inner traditions of the West, and especially to any brother of the Craft whose search for 'more light' leads to the portals of the Mysteries." John Michael Greer, author of The Way of the Golden Section, The Ceremony of the Grail, and Mystery Teachings from the Living Earth"Freemasonry and Rosicrucianism are like conjoined twins - ever connected and ever unique in their own ways. This peculiar union is no better expressed than in the 18th Degree of the Scottish Rite, the Rose+Croix Degree. Dunning's personal journey through these Mysteries is a welcome example of ora et labora, 'prayer and work', applied to their intertwined paths through the lenses of Hermeticism and Christian esotericism. As such, this book will be of value to anyone with such interests, regardless of their affiliation or lack thereof, and it may even find itself as part of a broader curriculum for working groups as well." Mark Stavish, M.A., 32 , author of The Path of Freemasonry: The Craft as a Spiritual Practice"Can Rosicrucian wisdom be consumed like a neatly packaged TV dinner, and will it yield the sustenance of the real thing? Some Rosicrucian Orders send cozy study materials that way. In contrast, Masonry leaves many things unsaid so that its esotericism needs to be unpackaged. A Rose Croix Oratory is the reward of one who has undertaken that journey for himself and opens the way for others to follow. The reader will start with a solid foundation in the tradition and gain the Rosicrucian mindset, and the symbols of the tradition are presented so that you can draw out the vital sustenance of that most holy Rosy Dew for yourself." Samuel Robinson, author of Alois Mailander: A Rosicrucian Remembered and The Rosicrucian Fraternities in the Wake of J.B.Kerning and Alois Mailander
" Friedman's] knack for being in the right place at an extraordinary amount of right times, coupled with his ability to size up noteworthy characters and scenes, has secured his place as one of the most important and recognized photographers of youth culture...If it wasn't for these photos and these words, the story of the Z-Boys may have never been told, and the impact skateboarding's had on the world would have been significantly reduced."--Strength Magazine" An] amazing collection of images from Friedman, who was a skater and friend of the Z-Boys and managed to be there for a ridiculous amount of the important sessions (Tony Alva's first frontside air ever? )...The book picks the best of the best from Stecyk's] articles and photos, and coupled with Friedman's you get a very personal and complete sense of what the whole deal was really about... A]s a skater, you not only owe it to yourself to check these things out and learn what went down way back when, but you owe it to these guys who changed skating forever."--SLAP Magazine"Fueled by Stecyk's often cryptic prose and stark black-and-white photography, these pieces of poetic propaganda proliferated the defiantly aggressive Dogtown skateboarding style that flew in the face of the more wholesome image propagated by the media and then fledgling skateboard industry. With help from prescient (yet barely pubescent at age 14) photographer Glen E. Friedman, who published iconic shots of the Z-Boys for SkateBoarder, the Dogtown scene set the gritty, urban, counter-culture tone that would come to define modern skating...A must-have companion piece."--SurferIn the early 1970s, the sport of skateboarding had so waned from its popularity in the 1960s that it was virtually nonexistent. In the DogTown area of west Los Angeles, a group of young surfers known as the Zephyr Team (Z-Boys) was experimenting with new and radical moves and styles in the water, which they translated to the street. When competition skateboarding returned in 1975, the Z-Boys turned the skating world on its head. DogTown: The Legend of the Z-Boys is a truly fascinating case study of how an underground sport ascended in the world. These are the stories and images of a time that not only inspired a generation but changed the face of the sport forever. This volume has been described as "the DogTown textbook" and an indispensable companion piece to the Sony Pictures Classics film Dogtown and Z-Boys. Now spanning 1975-1985 and beyond, the first section of the book includes the best of the DogTown articles written and photographed by C.R. Stecyk III as they originally appeared in SkateBoarder Magazine. The second half compiles hundreds of skate images from the archives of Glen E. Friedman--many of which appear in the movie. (Stecyk and Friedman acted as executive producers and advisors for the film.)The bigger, newly designed edition of the book includes many never-before-seen Friedman photos, along with a new postscript by Stecyk.
