Teachers Under Pressure

Teachers Under Pressure

Cary Cooper; Cheryl Travers

Our education system has undergone a process of enormous and rapid change, and all too often teachers have found that insufficient support has been offered to help them cope with this. As a result, most teachers now find that they experience stress of one sort or another at some point during their careers. As a direct reaction to this, the National Association of Schoolmasters and Union of Women Teachers (NASUWT) have commissioned a comprehensive study of the issue of teacher stress. This book reports on the findings of that study, and the implications this has not only for teachers, but also for the pupils they teach. Cary Cooper and Cheryl Travers' book: * helps to identify which teachers are currently at risk of stress * explores how teacher's problems vary according to where they work, their grade, whether they are male or female and the age range they teach * suggests ways in which the problems of teachers can be helped * suggests preventative action to minimise stress and maximise educational experience
Public Relations and Whistleblowing

Public Relations and Whistleblowing

There is a growing interest in corporate whistleblowing, but no comprehensive research has yet focused on public relations practice. Drawing on extensive research on Fortune 1000 and Wilshire 5000 corporations, this book reveals executives’ attitudes and relationships toward their organizations and their impact on whistleblowing.Perhaps unsurprisingly, it reveals that wrongdoing in corporations and the privileges of power coexist. Top-ranking public relations executives, who are mostly white and male, are more likely to be aware of wrongdoing but no more likely to blow the whistle, fundamentally due to their positive relationship with their employers. Using the new lens of evolutionary theory, this study explains whistleblowing, retaliation, and relationships, and in the light of the connection between whistleblowing behavior and executives’ attitudes, it proposes a new theory of the phenomenon of Golden Handcuffs. As public attitudes to corporations, corporate social responsibility (CSR), and transparency harden, these findings have serious implications for companies globally. Researchers, scholars, and advanced students in public relations, organizational communication, corporate communication, strategic communication, corporate reputation, and CSR will find this book full of revealing insights.

As governments throughout the world experience increasing fiscal challenges, the pressures on public sectors to streamline services and harness technological advances is unprecedented. Many have undergone huge budgetary cuts as a result, but what are the effects of this intense organisational change on such a large and varied workforce? And how can managers within the public sector meet the challenge of delivering services whilst maintaining the health and wellbeing of staff tasked with carrying out the work?Managing Health and WellBeing in the Public Sector: A Guide to Best Practice is the ideal companion to any manager in these challenging times. Exploring the realities of working in the public sector, and those factors which can add meaning and purpose to working life, the book provides managers with a practical toolkit for creating the best working environment, as well as nurturing resilience and motivation within their staff. Written by two authors with a lifetime of experience in the field, the book also examines why promoting occupational health and wellbeing is beneficial to organizations, drawing on a wealth of international research to support this argument. It concludes with a series of case studies in which an international range of public sector managers discuss initiatives they have implemented, and how successful they have been. This is the ideal companion for any manager working in the public sector. It will also be instructive reading for students or researchers of occupational or organizational psychology, as well as HRM.

It's the first day on the job for Giles and Felix - and they're already late. But maybe they don't know what they're stepping into. The term "occupational hazard" takes on an entirely different meaning altogether for our two anti-hero zeros. Especially when they realize the sizable shoes that must be filled. At least they know that at the end of a long day, there's always Max's The Bar. And maybe even a story? Book Three of the series.

It's been a long day for everyone at Max's The Bar. Sally decides to tell Giles and Felix a story. It's a fun little tale about a magician, a clockwork girl, progress, and a magic word. Curious yet? Maybe you need another drink to get you through it. Or, perhaps, it's best to sit back, not say anything, and just enjoy the ride.

Giles and Felix came home drunk again. Did Sally's story get under Giles' skin, perhaps? He seems more frustrated than usual. Felix is still just along for the ride, but waking up the next morning is proving to be more difficult with each passing day. Having to go back to work ain't so great either. Especially when you're really just waiting to go back to Max's The Bar again. At least the boss ain't around, right? Book Five of the series.

Harry Rusper, a trader in other people's discarded golden trinkets, has been discovered dead by his wife in their kitchen just outside Lincoln, with a claw hammer embedded in his skull. At the same time in the cathedral city, Harry's younger brother has had his home ransacked while he dined out in a local restaurant. Is the timing sheer coincidence or had Danny been at home would the same fate have come knocking on his door? Swedish born DI Inga Larsson realised right from the outset that this wasn't a run-of-the-mill domestic gone badly wrong. She knew for certain that this Harry Rusper was just as dead as any other murder victim, but with gold as a defining issue. Inga had to consider that this could very well be a case of both brothers being made to pay the price for Harry's brash dealing indiscretions. Her hunt for the killer and the truth will lead Inga down a road she could never have imagined. A road that will unleash a secret which, if revealed, would make headlines across the world.

Swedish-born DI Inga Larsson stood in the barn that chilly morning looking down at the body of the poor young wretch. It may now be a world of phones that are too smart and Beats headphones, of kissy-kissy greetings and social media the British public get fussed about. But in some aspects, life has not changed one iota. Being dead is still as dead as it has always been. Two squabbling factions come to the attention of Larsson and her team - not the usual hoodlums or drug gangs. These two outfits are Lincoln's amateur dramatic groups, both overflowing with odd balls, antagonistic miscreants, and eccentrics who refuse to see eye-to-eye. As Larsson digs deeper, she comes face-to-face with homophobic and racist attitudes, with unadulterated snootiness served as a side dish. Has an innocent young woman become embroiled in their dispute in the name of art and paid the price with her life? As Shakespeare put it: Murder most foul, as in the best it is; But this most foul, strange, and unnatural.

On the First day of Christmas Allan Townend, the Chief Constable, discovered an oven-ready Partridge from Waitrose wrapped in festive paper on his doorstep at home. On the Second day, having been to watch a local football match, David Lavender, the Deputy Chief Constable, found a card depicting two doves glued to his windscreen. On the Third day another senior police officer had three eggs thrown at his front door. Then as the sequence unfolded in accordance with the centuries old rhyme, five gold coloured curtain rings arrived in a jiffy bag, seven swans were poisoned on the Brayford in Lincoln, and then a magistrate was just one of many subjected to a childish prank, before the whole episode took a dark sinister turn. Should you be eagerly looking forward to a tale about a jolly old fat bearded bloke in a red suit with a few reindeer, you're going to be mightily disappointed. On the Twelfth day of Christmas my true love sent to me...a dead body. Lincolnshire Murder Mystery No 6
