Have the music and movie industries lost the battle to criminalize downloading? This penetrating and informative book provides readers with the perfect systematic critical guide to the file-sharing phenomenon. Combining inter-disciplinary resources from sociology, history, media and communication studies and cultural studies, David unpacks the economics, psychology and philosophy of file-sharing. The book carefully situates the reader in a field of relevant approaches including network society theory, post-structuralism and ethnographic research. It uses this to launch into a fascinating enquiry into: the rise of file-sharingthe challenge to intellectual property law posed by new technologies of communicationthe social psychology of cyber crimethe response of the mass media and multi-national corporations. Matthew David concludes with a balanced, eye-opening assessment of alternative cultural modes of participation and their relationship to cultural capitalism. This is a landmark work in the sociology of popular culture and cultural criminology. It fuses a deep knowledge of the music industry and the new technologies of mass communication with a powerful perspective on how multinational corporations seek to monopolize markets, how international and state agencies defend property, while a global multitude undermine and/or reinvent both.

THE ANGEL OF MUSIC is the complete series of four novels, loosely based on the novel The Phantom of the Opera, by Gaston Leroux. BOOK 1 SANTA MONICA Twelve-year-old Christine Daa travels with her widowed father to Los Angeles where he hopes to enroll her in the Belen Conservatory of Music. Homeless and destitute, they work as street performers to earn money for food. Raoul Chagny hears Christine singing on the Santa Monica Pier and he is instantly smitten by the beautiful young girl with an angelic voice. BOOK 2 SAINT-TROPEZ Christine receives an unexpected invitation to spend two weeks at the Chagny beach house in Saint-Tropez. The rekindling of romance with Raoul in the south of France is interrupted, however, when Christine meets a handsome, charming, and possibly dangerous new boy, Erik. She returns to school at the Belen Conservatory after a brief, glorious, tragic summer. BOOK 3 SANTA FE Christine travels to Santa Fe where she is offered a summer job working backstage at the legendary Santa Fe Opera House. Rumors abound among the crew that the Opera Ghost has returned. Before singing a single note from the new opera, Sangre de Cristo, the diva La Carlotta becomes violently ill on stage, and Christine is plucked from the audience to sing the leading role. BOOK 4 SANGRE DE CRISTO After being kidnapped off the stage by the Opera Ghost in front of a sold-out house Christine suddenly finds herself the most famous young soprano in the world, swarmed by reporters and paparazzi. Tickets for "reopening night" of Sangre de Cristo are at a premium as Christine takes the stage at the Santa Fe Opera House.

Punk Slash! Musicals

Punk Slash! Musicals is the first book to deal extensively with punk narrative films, specifically British and American punk rock musicals produced from roughly 1978 to 1986. Films such as Jubilee, Breaking Glass, Times Square, Smithereens, Starstruck, and Sid and Nancy represent a convergence between independent, subversive cinema and formulaic classical Hollywood and pop musical genres. Guiding this project is the concept of "slip-sync." Riffing on the commonplace lip-sync phenomenon, "slip-sync" refers to moments in the films when the punk performer "slips" out of sync with the performance spectacle, and sometimes the sound track itself, engendering a provocative moment of tension. This tension frequently serves to illustrate other thematic and narrative conflicts, central among these being the punk negotiation between authenticity and inauthenticity. Laderman emphasizes the strong female lead performer at the center of most of these films, as well as each film's engagement with gender and race issues. Additionally, he situates his analyses in relation to the broader cultural and political context of the neo-conservatism and new electronic audio-visual technologies of the 1980s, showing how punk's revolution against the mainstream actually depends upon a certain ironic embrace of pop culture.
Twenty Thousand Roads: The Ballad of Gram Parsons and His Cosmic American Music
As a singer and songwriter, Gram Parsons stood at the nexus of countless musical crossroads, and he sold his soul to the devil at every one. His intimates and collaborators included Keith Richards, William Burroughs, Marianne Faithfull, Peter Fonda, Roger McGuinn, and Clarence White. Parsons led the Byrds to create the seminal country rock masterpiece Sweetheart of the Rodeo, helped to guide the Rolling Stones beyond the blues in their appreciation of American roots music, and found his musical soul mate in Emmylou Harris. Parsons' solo albums, GP and Grievous Angel, are now recognized as visionary masterpieces of the transcendental jambalaya of rock, soul, country, gospel, and blues Parsons named "Cosmic American Music." Parsons had everything-looks, charisma, money, style, the best drugs, the most heartbreaking voice-and threw it all away with both hands, dying of a drug and alcohol overdose at age twenty-six. In this beautifully written, raucous, meticulously researched biography, David N. Meyer gives Parsons' mythic life its due. From interviews with hundreds of the famous and obscure who knew and worked closely with Parsons-many who have never spoken publicly about him before-Meyer conjures a dazzling panorama of the artist and his era. Praise for Twenty Thousand Roads NAMED ONE OF THE BEST BOOKS OF THE YEAR BY THE LOS ANGELES TIMES NAMED ONE OF THE FIVE BEST ROCK BOOKS OF THE YEAR BY ROLLING STONE "Far and away the most thorough biography of Parsons . . . skewers any number of myths surrounding this endlessly mythologized performer."-Los Angeles Times "A terrific biography of a rock innovator that hums with juicy detail and wincing truth. . . . Page after page groans with the folly of the '60s drug culture, the tragedy of talent toasted before its time, the curse of wealth and the madness of wasted opportunity."-The Atlanta Journal-Constitution "The definitive account of Gram Parsons' life-and early death. From the country-rock pioneer's wealthy, wildly dysfunctional family through his symbiotic friendship with Keith Richards, Meyer deftly illuminates one of rock's most elusive figures."-Rolling Stone "Meticulously researched . . . Though Meyer answers a lot of long-burning questions, he preserves Parsons' legend as a man of mystery."-Entertainment Weekly"Meyer gives Parsons a thorough, Peter Guralnick-like treatment."-New York Post Visit the official website: www.twentythousandroads.com

The Book of the Ring: A Novelistic Rendition of Wagner's Music-Drama: Der Ring Des Nibelungen
"The Book of the Ring" is a prose narrative version of Wagner's "Ring-Cycle", presented here in the form of a novel, in the style and tradition of the greatest romances known to the world. If you have loved the tales of Snow White and Sleeping Beauty, The Hobbit and The Lord of the Rings, King Arthur and the Dragon, Jason and the Golden Fleece, Tristan and Isolde, you will want to read "The Book of the Ring". All these, and many more of the greatest myths and legends of all time, have their echoes, often their sources, in the Nibelungensaga, a mixture of Germanic and Norse mythology that reached its literary apotheosis in legends of the royal family of the Burgundians around the 5th century. In creating his greatest work, one of the greatest operas of all time, the Festspiel (Music-Drama) in four parts which he called "The Ring of the Nibelungen", Wagner took the original Nibelungensaga as his starting-point, but retold the tale in his own way, changing some names, adding new characters, and providing an ending that has had huge historical ramifications. In "The Book of the Ring", David Prashker has taken Wagner's libretto and stage directions and transformed into prose narrative what is performed as musical-theatre in opera houses all around the world, retelling this extraordinary tale of love and betrayal, of heroism and perfidy, of the rule and the fall of the gods, and of the curse of the ring fashioned from the Rheingold. An essential introduction to one of the greatest works in the history of music. David Prashker's fictional autobiography of Wagner, "A Pilgrimage To Bayreuth", is also available from The Argaman Press.

An iconic Parisian club, a cinema masterpiece, and now Broadway musical the Moulin Rouge has been a fascinating phenomenon of popular culture for over a century. The 2019 Broadway debut of Moulin Rouge! The Musical astounded theatre critics the New York Times Ben Brantley declaring the show euphoric and his Critic s Pick. It quickly became near impossible to get a ticket, breaking box office records for the Al Hirschfeld Theatre, with a slew of locals, tourists, and celebrities lining up to visit the latest incarnation of the red windmill. How was it that a musical, based on a twenty-year-old film, which in turn was inspired by a 130-year-old French club, was able to electrify Broadway? Celebrated theatre writer and critic David Cote has been given unrestricted access to the show s creative team, cast, and crew to retrace the steps of how Moulin Rouge! The Musical came to be. From a 2009 meeting with Baz Luhrmann in Sydney, chance introductions, years of music rights negotiation and re-writes, not to mention a partial theatre collapse and a pandemic, come what may, this was a show that was destined to be made. In six chapters of lush photo essay, the process of crafting Moulin Rouge! The Musical comes to life with images drawn from the creative team s personal archives, from early sketches, to swatches, historical research, technical diagrams, and photos. Accompanied with first-hand accounts of the highs and lows of creating a show that referenced as much as it reinvented the Broadway musical, this is a book for bohemians and aristocrats alike.

García recounts Rodríguez's battle for recognition at the height of "mambo mania" in New York City and the significance of his music in the development of salsa. With firsthand accounts from relatives and fellow musicians, Arsenio Rodríguez and the Transnational Flows of Latin Popular Music follows Rodríguez's fortunes on several continents, speculating on why he never enjoyed wide commercial success despite the importance of his music. García focuses on the roles that race, identity, and politics played in shaping Rodríguez's music and the trajectory of his musical career. His transnational perspective has important implications for Latin American and popular music studies.
