Immorality

Immorality

Ronald Dmitri Milo

Princeton University Press
2014
pokkari
This book explores a much-neglected area of moral philosophy--the typology of immorality. Ronald D. Milo questions the adequacy of Aristotle's suggestion that there are two basic types of immorality--wickedness and moral weakness--and argues that we must distinguish between at least six different types of immoral behavior. Originally published in 1984. The Princeton Legacy Library uses the latest print-on-demand technology to again make available previously out-of-print books from the distinguished backlist of Princeton University Press. These editions preserve the original texts of these important books while presenting them in durable paperback and hardcover editions. The goal of the Princeton Legacy Library is to vastly increase access to the rich scholarly heritage found in the thousands of books published by Princeton University Press since its founding in 1905.

Perpendicular Magnetic Recording

Perpendicular Magnetic Recording

Sakhrat Khizroev; Dmitri Litvinov

Springer-Verlag New York Inc.
2004

Magnetic recording is expected to become core technology in a multi-billion dollar industry in the in the very near future. Some of the most critical discoveries regarding perpendicular write and playback heads and perpendicular media were made only during the last several years as a result of extensive and intensive research in both academia and industry in their fierce race to extend the superparamagnetic limit in the magnetic recording media. These discoveries appear to be critical for implementing perpendicular magnetic recording into an actual disk drive. This book addresses all the open questions and issues which need to be resolved before perpendicular recording can finally be implemented successfully, and is the first monograph in many years to address this subject. This book is intended for graduate students, young engineers and even senior and more experienced researchers in this field who need to acquire adequate knowledge of the physics of perpendicular magnetic recording in order to further develop the field of perpendicular recording.
Cognitive Radio Networks

Cognitive Radio Networks

This book describes a communication paradigm that could shape the future of wireless communication networks, Opportunistic Spectrum Access (OSA) in Cognitive Radio Networks (CRN). While several theoretical OSA approaches have been proposed, they are challenged by the practical limitations of cognitive radios: the key enabling technology of OSA. This book presents an unprecedented formulation of the OSA problem in CNR that takes into account the practical limitations encountered due to existing technologies. Based on such a problem formulation, this book presents a framework and protocol details implementing the analytically-optimized solution of this problem. Unlike the state-of-the-art of CRN implementations that typically target software define radios which are not suitable for real systems, this book describes the implementation of distributed OSA, using practical radio transceiver technologies. It provides a thorough characterization of the gains available to theoretical OSA approaches if the practical limitations are taken into consideration. Tackles the cognitive radio networks performance optimization problem, taking into account the practical limitations of today’s technologies; Provides thorough performance evaluation in arbitrary, large-scale networks, as well as microscopic, small-scale performance evaluation, using realistic hardware implementation;Presents an empirical study of the gains available over existing techniques by adopting practical approaches;Tackles the cognitive radio networks performance optimization problem, taking into account the practical limitations of today’s technologies; Provides thorough performance evaluation in arbitrary, large-scale networks, as well as microscopic, small-scale performance evaluation, usingrealistic hardware implementation;Presents an empirical study of the gains available over existing techniques by adopting practical approaches;

Magnetospheric MHD Oscillations

Magnetospheric MHD Oscillations

Magnetospheric MHD Oscillations A groundbreaking new theory of the magnetosphere The magnetosphere is the region around Earth in which our planet’s magnetic field exerts its influence to trap charged particles. Waves in this magnetosphere, known as magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) oscillations, are caused by interactions between these charged particles, Solar wind pulses, and the magnetic field. The predictable interval between these oscillations enables them to serve as tools for understanding the magnetospheric plasma which comprises the field. Magnetospheric MHD Oscillations offers a comprehensive overview of the theory underlying these waves and their periodicity. Emphasizing the spatial structure of the oscillations, it advances a theory of MHD oscillation that promises to have significant ramifications in astronomy and beyond. Magnetospheric MHD Oscillations readers will also find: Theorizing of direct relevance to current satellite missions, such as THEMIS and the Van Allen ProbeIn-depth discussion of topics including Alfven resonance, waveguides in plasma filaments, and many moreDetailed appendices including key calculations and statistical parameters Magnetospheric MDH Oscillations is ideal for plasma physicists, theoretical physicists, applied mathematicians, and advanced graduate students in these and related subfields.

Linear Algebra for Economists

Linear Algebra for Economists

Hasan Ersel; Dmitri Piontkovski

Springer-Verlag Berlin and Heidelberg GmbH Co. K
2011
sidottu
This textbook introduces students of economics to the fundamental notions and instruments in linear algebra. Linearity is used as a first approximation to many problems that are studied in different branches of science, including economics and other social sciences. Linear algebra is also the most suitable to teach students what proofs are and how to prove a statement. The proofs that are given in the text are relatively easy to understand and also endow the student with different ways of thinking in making proofs. Theorems for which no proofs are given in the book are illustrated via figures and examples. All notions are illustrated appealing to geometric intuition. The book provides a variety of economic examples using linear algebraic tools. It mainly addresses students in economics who need to build up skills in understanding mathematical reasoning. Students in mathematics and informatics may also be interested in learning about the use of mathematics in economics.
