This is the first full-length biography of Dorothy Morland (1906–99), to date the only female director of the Institute of Contemporary Arts (ICA) in London. Based on unpublished letters and other archival sources, as well as interviews and personal recollections, this book traces her busy private and public life from the 1930s up until the 1990s. It tells the story of one of the unacknowledged contributors to the success of the ICA and to the understanding of the international avant garde in post-war Britain. As a female arts administrator, Dorothy Morland’s work has been largely overlooked, and this book aims to highlight her significant contribution to the public understanding of modernism. She was part of a network which included the Surrealist Roland Penrose, art critic Herbert Read, architect Jane Drew and wealthy philanthropists, Peter Gregory and Peter Watson. She was also the protector and advocate for the Independent Group. Dorothy Morland always mixed business with pleasure (dancing with Picasso in Antibes while there on ICA business), and tirelessly oversaw the chaotic organisation that was the ICA in Dover Street from 1950 until 1968. After leaving the ICA she worked hard on assembly the organisation’s archives and securing their safekeeping at Tate.

First published in 1908, "Dorothy and the Wizard in Oz" is the fourth book in L. Frank Baum's "Oz" series. In this installment of the charming adventures of Dorothy, she has returned from Australia and goes with her Uncle Henry and her cat Eureka to California to visit relatives. There she meets her cousin Zeb and soon they are transported to lands of magic and fantasy when the buggy they are riding in falls through a crack in the ground. Dorothy, Zeb, Eureka, and a cab-horse named Jim land in the underground realm of the Mangaboos, who are vegetable people growing on vines and living in glass buildings. There Dorothy is reunited with the Wizard of Oz when he floats down in his hot air balloon and saves them from a terrible fate at the hands of the Mangaboos. The adventurers are later aided by invisible people in the Valley of Voe and must escape several unfriendly mythical creatures before they may finally return to Oz. Baum's vivid imagination and creativity are readily apparent in this entertaining and timeless work that takes place in a land at once familiar and yet full of exciting possibility.
Dorothy Wordsworth's Rydal Journals

Dorothy Wordsworth's Rydal Journals

LIVERPOOL UNIVERSITY PRESS

Although Dorothy Wordsworth’s journals have long been celebrated for their vibrant and keen-eyed portraits of everyday life, until now only brief excerpts have been available from her most extensive set of diaries – the fifteen notebooks from 1824–35 that have come to be known as the Rydal Journals. This scholarly edition of the complete contents of these journals therefore marks a watershed moment for the study of this remarkable woman and, more generally, the shifting literary, cultural, and political realities of Reform-era Britain. The first half of the Rydal Journals chronicles the comings and goings of a buoyant fifty-something still in her physical and intellectual prime, capturing her bustling social life when at home in the Lakes and her zeal for new adventures when travelling to Manchester, Yorkshire, the Midlands, the Welsh Marches, and the Isle of Man. The ensuing half, by contrast, offers an alternately inspiring and heart-breaking record of the diarist’s attempts to find joy and meaning amid the sudden onset of old age and disability that followed her near-fatal illness of 1829. Besides providing long-overdue access to what may be the last great trove of unpublished life writing by a major English Romantic, this edition surrounds the text of the journals with dozens of illustrations, a wealth of explanatory footnotes, and engaging introductions to the people, places, and events that helped define this pivotal decade of Dorothy Wordsworth’s life.

Dorothy Macardle (1889–1958) was a political and social activist, journalist, novelist, broadcaster, playwright, and one of the most popular and influential Irish historians of her time. Smith’s biography traces her life from her involvement in the War of Independence to her role as a leading civil libertarian in the 1950s. Smith explores her literary career and her international human rights work. An Irish nationalist writer with an international reputation, Macardle was a fascinating woman, and her career sheds light on modern Irish political history, and Irish literature.

At one point in her life, Dorothy Paget was described by journalist Quintin Gilbey, as `so much in the public eye that she became, apart from royalty, the best-known woman in the land.’ Synonymous with Golden Miller, perhaps the greatest racehorse ever to jump a fence, Paget ploughed fortunes into racing and breeding, buying – despite never visiting – the Ballymacoll Stud in Ireland. She also happened to be the biggest gambler ever to walk the turf. Living an eccentric lifestyle, she would spend most of the day in bed and rise at night, placing bets with bookmakers and their staff, specifically employed for these late night duties. She was even allowed to place bets on races that had already been run the previous day. This long overdue telling of the life of an extraordinary, larger-than-life character is now available in paperback.

Leeann Lane

Dorothy Macardle - literary teacher, propagandist journalist, political playwright, gothic fiction novelist - is a multi-faceted woman who has remained too often below the radar of historical recognition. In Dorothy Macardle Leeann Lane intends to change this. She is most remembered as the author of The Irish Republic (1937): a full-scale history of the revolutionary period from an anti-Treaty perspective commissioned by de Valera. A bestseller, it became the definitive book of the period fixing Macardle's reputation for too long as merely de Valera's mouthpiece. Yet, as Leann Lane puts forth, Macardle was much more than its author. An intellectually strong, politically persuasive and stoically independent woman: Macardle was beholden to no one. From Sinn Fein propagandist to the gradualist republicanism of Fianna Fail to ardent feminist and gothic novelist, Macardle's personal and political evolution is mapped out for us by Lane in the pages of this book. Exploring her Jail Journal as first-hand source material, the early evolution of Macardle's political thought and action is revealed to us. The wealth of new archival material in the Bureau of Military History Witness Statements and the Military Service Pension Collection is deeply examined, presenting a who's who of Irish republican history as we learn about the many people and events that influenced Macardle's life. Central to the story is an analysis of the commitment of Macardle to female activist politics as she moves further from de Valera's reach, often expressed in subterranean or subversive ways. Macardle's opposition to the position of women in the 1936 Conditions of Employment Act and, most particularly, in the 1937 Constitution was not overt on political platforms but Lane reveals to us that a deep criticism is contained within the pages of her gothic novels published in the 1940s. Insightful readings of her later writing, including her most influential novels The Uninvited (1942) and The Unforeseen (1946), showcases Macardle as a short story writer, playwright and gothic novelist of republican and feminist intent. This is a rich biographical journey through Dorothy Macardle's writing as propagandist, social commentator, republican and feminist. It affirms Macardle's place as one of the foremost activist polemicists as the new Irish State unchained itself from its colonial past and asserted an independent political and cultural identity to be reckoned with.

INTERNATIONAL BEE RESEARCH ASSOCIATION

The Pollen Loads of the Honeybee by Dorothy Hodges, an artist and experienced beekeeper, was first published 1952. It included drawings of pollen grains which will never be surpassed. The originals are preserved at the Royal Botanic Gardens, Kew. This booklet, published by IBRA, reproduces these drawings.Dorothy Hodges was a trained artist with an artist's acute powers of observation as well as being a beekeeper. In 1946 she had the idea of making a colour chart of pollen loads. It took several years for her ideas to gestate but the glorious outcome was the publication, by the then Bee Research Association, of The Pollen Loads of the Honeybee in 1952.Designed as a very practical guide for beekeepers, the importance of the book was immense and it has long since risen from being a humble textbook and guide to a much sought after collectors' item. Its rarity and importance mean that it is no longer easily obtainable and so difficult for the ordinary beekeeper to appreciate its contents. For this very reason IBRA has decided to reproduce Mrs Hodges's delicate drawings of pollen grains as a separate publication and in so doing hopefully make her work known to other generations of beekeepers.Although the painstakingly produced colour charts of the original book still have their value it would.not be possible to reproduce them with sufficient accuracy to do justice to the original work. However, the drawings lend them-selves to reasonable reproduction. They are of outstanding artistic merit and offer the possibility of identifying the pollen forms which are most frequently collected by bees. For beginners these drawings will do good service as an introduction to the pollen analysis of honey. The drawings need no explanation other than a name - the family group, the Latin scientific name and the common English name - thus making the book independent of language barriers. This means it can be appreciated in many countries where the original work was unknown or is now out of reach because of rarity and cost. The cover is taken from Dorothy Hodges own watercolour painting that she suggested might adorn the dust jacket of the original publication. The artwork was not used and so this booklet allows it to be seen publicly for the first time in almost sixty years. Finally, for the convenience of the reader, the actual pollen drawings retain the same page, numbers as the plates in the original book.Richard JonesFormer Director, IBRAOctober 2009

The rabbit is the hero of the story, but the adventures in which he figures are thoroughly new and laughable on their own account. He hears of the doings of rascally Captain Crow, of Major Possum. Colonel Coon, and General Bear; the "Peace Supper,"-first of conventions of this sort which have come to naught.-"The Moonlight Dance," and the various other happenings of sage-brush land. Dorothy Iannone: You Who Read Me With Passion Now Must Forever Be My Friends
Iannone’s image–text works celebrate a joyful sexuality and spirituality For over five decades, Dorothy Iannone has been making exuberantly sexual and joyfully transgressive image–text works. Karen Rosenberg wrote of her in The New York Times: “High priestess, matriarch, sex goddess: the self-taught American artist Dorothy Iannone has been called all these things and more. Since the early 1960s she has been making paintings, sculptures and artist’s books that advocate ‘ecstatic unity,’ most often achieved through lovemaking.” Beginning with the famous “An Icelandic Saga,” in which Iannone narrates her journey to Iceland (where she meets Dieter Roth and leaves her husband to live with him), this singular volume traces Iannone’s search for “ecstatic unity” from its carnal beginnings in her relationships with Roth and other men into its spiritual incarnation as she becomes a practicing Buddhist. Reproducing several previously unpublished or long-out-of-print works in their entirety (such as Danger in Düsseldorf, The Whip, “An Explosive Interlude”), as well as longer excerpts from rarely-seen works like A Cookbook and Berlin Beauties, this volume gives readers the chance to read her work with sustained attention, and enjoy the sophistication of the stories she tells and the visual–textual embellishments that make them so irresistible. Associated with Fluxus through her close friendships with Emmett Williams, Robert Filliou and Ben Vautier, as well as most well-known for her relationship with Dieter Roth, Dorothy Iannone (born 1933) nevertheless has her own distinct aesthetic style and substantive concerns. Her first major museum show in the U.S. came when she was 75 in 2008 at the New Museum, shortly after her “orgasm box” titled “I Was Thinking of You” was included in the Whitney Biennial in 2006, and she has recently attained more recognition with solo shows at the Camden Arts Centre, Palais de Tokyo and the Berlinischer Galerie.
