Forest Diversity and Management

Forest Diversity and Management

Springer-Verlag New York Inc.

Natural forests with thousands of years of ecological continuity are unrivalled as the treasure store of terrestrial biodiversity on Earth. And while there is currently no fully comprehensive inventory of the biota associated with any given forest, it is reasonable to assume that in conserving natural forests we can conserve the myriads of unnamed bacteria, fungi, insects, mites and nematodes that forests support. Drawing on diverse research from biodiversity experts around the world, this collection of papers reflects the diversity of forest types and forest issues that concern forest scientists globally. Forest types considered vary from savannah and tropical rainforests to the ancient oak forests of Poland; issues explored include the effects of logging, management practices, forest dynamics and climate change on forest structure and biodiversity.
Forest Strategy

Forest Strategy

In the past, lack of understanding at the nexus between the forest sector on the one hand and strategic management on the other, has led to failures in many countries to realise the potential that forest sector development offers. This important new book adopts a more holistic approach to propose a new theoretical framework for this once traditional sector; one which reconciles current thinking in strategic management with natural resource management. The book will provide a valuable resource for both forestry professionals – particularly those in managerial positions in government departments and forest services throughout the world – and for advanced students and researchers exploring the issues around forest sector administration. The latter will include researchers from a range of backgrounds, including forestry, ecology, geography, conservation, rural development, economics, forest or environmental policy, social studies and public affairs, and will be of particular interest to groups adopting an interdisciplinary approach to forestry issues.

Forest mensuration is one of the most fundamental disciplines within forest and related sciences. It deals with the measurement of trees and stands and the analysis of the resultant information. During the early days of sustained forest management simple measurement and estimation methods and with the analysis of inventory and research data were available. The middle of last c- tury, however, witnessed a worldwide increase in the need for more quan- tative information about trees and stands. This generated the need for more sophisticated methods to obtain and analyze forest data. This development was followed by a phenomenal explosion of information. During the past decades there has been fruitful cooperation between the Institute of Forest Inventory and Forest Growth, formerly “Institute of Forest Management and Forest Yield Sciences” of the University of Gottingen, ¨ Germany and the Faculty of Forestry of the University of Stellenbosch, South Africa. This book is one of the results of this fruitful cooperation between these institutions.

Forest Entomology in West Tropical Africa: Forest Insects of Ghana

It is indeed an honour for me to write the foreword to the second edition of Forest Entomology in West Tropical Africa: Forest Insects of Ghana. Originally co- thored by Professor Michael R. Wagner, Dr. S.K.N. Atuahene, and Dr. Joseph R. Cobbinah, the authorship now includes Dr. Paul P. Bosu, who replaces Dr. Atuahene of blessed memory (may his soul rest in perfect peace). In the preface to the first e- tion the authors stated their motivation for writing in these words: “We have written this book with the practicing forester and forest entomologist in mind.” I am c- vinced beyond any doubt that the book has been, and continues to be, of immense benefit to the targeted audience. Over the course of the last 16 years, since the publication of the maiden edition in 1991, there have been tremendous changes in the science and practice of forest entomology in West Africa. Research has improved significantly and the volume of literature on the subject has also increased severalfold. The biology, ecology, and management of major insects for which very little was known nearly two decades ago have now been studied. At the same time, collaboration among forest entom- ogists and other scientists of West Africa improved significantly and greatly enhanced the science and practice of forest entomology in the subregion. The healthy development would greatly facilitate management of pest outbreaks, which invariably are not limited by national boundaries.
Forest Policies and Social Change in England

Forest Policies and Social Change in England

Sylvie Nail

Springer-Verlag New York Inc.

Forestry has been witness to some dramatic changes in recent years, with several Western countries now moving away from the traditional model of regarding forests merely as sources of wood. Rather these countries are increasingly recognizing their forests as multi-purpose resources with roles which go far beyond simple economics. In this innovative book, Sylvie Nail uses England as a case study to explore the relationships between forests, society and public perceptions, raising important questions about forest policy and management both now and in the future. Adopting a sociological approach to forest policy and management, the book discusses the current validity of the two principles underlying forestry since the Middle Ages: first, that forestry should only exist when no better use of the land can be made, and second, that forestry itself should be profitable. The author stresses how values and perceptions shape policies, and conversely how policies can modify perceptions, and also how policies can fail if they do not take perceptions into account. She concludes that many of the issues facing English forestry in the 21st century – from leisure, health and amenity provision, through education and rural as well as urban regeneration, to biodiversity conservation – go well beyond both national borders and the scope of forestry. Indeed forestry in the 21st century seems to be less about planting and managing trees than about being a vector and a mirror of social change. This novel synthesis provides a valuable resource for advanced students and researchers from all areas of natural resource studies, including those interested in social history, socio-economics, cultural geography and environmental psychology, as well as those studying landscape ecology, environmental history, policy analysis and natural resource management.

Jules Epstein, a man whose drive, avidity, and personality have, for sixty-eight years, been a force to be reckoned with, is undergoing a metamorphosis. In the wake of his parents' deaths, his divorce from a thirty-year marriage, and his retirement from the New York legal firm where he was a partner, he begins shedding the possessions he spent a lifetime accumulating - a watch here, an Old Master there - and becomes elusive, distant. Resolving to do something to commemorate his parents, he travels to Tel Aviv and checks into the Hilton. Meanwhile, a novelist leaves her husband and children behind in Brooklyn and arrives at the same hotel, hoping that the view of the pool she used to dive into on childhood holidays will unlock her writer's block. But when a retired professor of literature recruits her for a project involving Kafka, she is drawn into a mystery that will take her on a metaphysical journey and change her in ways she could never have imagined.
