My mother's kind and altruistic actions affected many lives. She wanted people to recognize that there is something good in everything and to take action to further that. With her positive attitude and pleasant temperament she would encourage people and give them hope. She was a remarkable, courageous woman. She walked through several time periods in history, living a happy childhood in Germany when it was still a monarchy, experiencing two disastrous world wars and their aftermath, living under Hitler's dictatorship and the Allied forces occupation of her home country. In addition, she grieved her husband's tragic death while bringing up their three children as a single parent. Her acceptance of being expelled from her home and living in cramped refugee camps is commendable. She never gave up; her trust in God gave her strength. She lived her last thirty years in Canada with her children.

Mein Vater war kein Schriftsteller. Dennoch schrieb er im Jahr 1992 im Alter von 70 Jahren seine "Kriegserinnerungen" nieder. Er schildert seine Erlebnisse in den Jahren von 1941 bis zum Kriegsende 1945 als "Sign ler" auf verschiedenen Schiffen der damaligen deutschen Kriegsmarine. Die Dramatik, die Schrecken und Gefahren des Krieges schildert er dabei ebenso sachlich wie er von der Kameradschaft der Seeleute und den privaten Erlebnissen an Bord und an Land humorvoll berichtet. Dabei entlarvt er die vielbesungene "Seemannsromantik" als Wunschdenken, das der Realit t nur wenig standh lt: "Es gibt so viele sch ne r hrselige Seemannslieder, die behaupten, dass die Matrosen Sehnsucht nach dem Meer h tten. Aber so einen habe ich nie kennengelernt. Meine Seem nner hatten alle nur Sehnsucht nach dem Hafen." H hepunkte der Erz hlung sind der Durchbruch der deutschen Schlachtschiffe SCHARNHORST und GNEISENAU durch den englischen Kanal sowie mehrere Schiffsunterg nge, die mein Vater miterlebt und berlebt hat. Zahlreiche Originalfotos, die zum Teil von ihm selbst, zum Teil von Bordkameraden gemacht wurden, bereichern das Buch.
