Cannon

Gholam-Hossein Sa'edi

IBEX Publishers,U.S.
2010
nidottu
"The Cannon" is the first and best of Gholam-Hossein Sa'edi's novels. It has an unwavering focus on a single character, the independent itinerant Mullah Mir Hashem who is clever and manipulative. Based on historical events, the novel is set in north-western Iran in the early twentieth century. It features tribal supporters of the Constitutional Revolution; Russian Cossacks who are backing the status quo; and Mullah Mir Hashem. The novel offers a glimpse into the tensions and machinations of the revo-lution, where each party is attempting to outwit, out-manoeuvre and otherwise deceive the other. For most of the narrative Mir Hashem seems to have outsmarted the others. The story comes to an intriguing and unpredictable end.

Iran and the United States

Seyed Hossein Mousavian; Shahir Shahidsaless

Bloomsbury Academic USA

Choice Outstanding Academic Title 2014Scores of books have been written by Western experts, mainly American, looking at the root causes of the conflict between Iran and the US. However, none of them have presented an inside look at this complex relationship from within the Iranian culture, society, and most importantly, the Iranian policy-making system. This gap has been the cause of misperceptions, misanalyses, and conflict, followed by the adoption of US policies that have failed to achieve their objectives. Seyed Hossein Mousavian worked for over 30 years on diplomatic efforts between Iran and the West, serving in numerous official posts, and as a confidante, colleague, and peer to many former and current high ranking Iranian officials, including now-President Hassan Rouhani and Iranian Foreign Minister Javad Zarif. Here the former diplomat gives an insider’s history of the troubled relationship between Iran and the US. His unique firsthand perspective blends memoir, analysis, and never before seen details of the many near misses in the quest for rapprochement. With so much at stake, the book concludes with a roadmap for peace that both nations so desperately need.

We are delighted that the second issue under the guidance of the new editorial team engages significant issues in Indian politics and policy. These include COVID-19 management, the decline of institutions such as the judiciary and the election commission, coalition politics, and India's democratic consolidation, and the roots of welfarism in China, India, and Turkey. This volume also deliberates on policies and legislations that have engendered instruments such as the citizenship identification marker christened as the "Aadhaar card" and the infamous electoral bonds scheme, which was declared illegal by the Indian Supreme Court in 2024. Some papers engage with the issue of political management. Others deal with the question of how an autocratizing executive interferes with the institutions of the state, and how the paucity of checks and balances comes with severe human costs. The Singular Cinema of Abbas Kiarostami

The Singular Cinema of Abbas Kiarostami

The films of Abbas Kiarostami confront the questions of cinematic representation, identity, and the relationship between cinema and everyday life in eloquent and imaginative ways. Through a close examination of Kiarostami's formal and narrative strategies in his films, notably Taste of Cherry, The Wind Will Carry Us, Close-Up and Ten, this innovative book works against the grain of auteurist readings of Kiarostami's films to explore global circulation and the controversy over censorship's role in the cinema. It grounds his films firmly within the historical context of Iranian national cinema, revealing the ways in which the reception of films across multiple sites can contribute to how national narratives are articulated locally and globally. It traces Iranian national cinema's self-reflexive narration of its own history and how, in the process, it positions itself as a major player in the construction of national consciousness.

Kripke's Wittgenstein

Kripke's Wittgenstein

Ali Hossein Khani

ANTHEM PRESS
2026
sidottu
The present book explores Kripke’s novel reading of Wittgenstein offered in his celebrated book Wittgenstein on Rules and Private Language(1982), as well as the crucial objections to it from over fifteen philosophers. Having introduced the basic notions on which Kripke’s Wittgenstein builds his sceptical challenge, the book concentrates on different aspects of the “sceptical argument,” which Kripke attributes to Wittgenstein. It then elucidates the sort of “sceptical solution” that Kripke takes Wittgenstein to be offering as an alternative view to classical realism. An investigation of how a similar sceptical problem arises in the case of attributions of sensations, as well as the sort of special problem, which according to Kripke’s Wittgenstein appears in the traditional model of dealing with the problem of other minds, ends the book’s explanation of Kripke’s Wittgenstein’s view. The book then focuses on the chief responses to Kripke’s reading of Wittgenstein offered by those prominent philosophers who have deeply engaged in the topic since the 80s, including John McDowell, Christopher Peacocke, Gordon Bake and Peter Hacker, Simon Blackburn, Colin McGinn, Crispin Wright, Paul Boghossian, Scott Soames, Noam Chomsky, Paul Horwich, Hannah Ginsborg, George Wilson, Philip Pettit and Barry Stroud.

Science & Civilization in Islam

Science & Civilization in Islam

Seyyed Hossein Nasr

The Islamic Texts Society

'Science and Civilization in Islam' has remained unsurpassed as the authoritative statement on this subject. With his characteristic breadth of learning, clarity of exposition and insight, Seyyed Hossein Nasr presents here for the first time a full picture of Islamic science, not as a chapter in the history of Western science, but as an integral aspect of Islamic civilisation and the Islamic intellectual tradition. By means of an historical presentation, an analysis of its forms, including the use of passages from the writings of many Muslim scientists and philosophers, the author is able to convey not only a sense of the operative context of Islamic science but he also demonstrates its inter-relatedness with the sapiential wisdom on which it is based. An introductory chapter provides the reader with a necessary orientation to the subject according to the principles of Islam, while subsequent chapters survey the whole spectrum of the individual sciences from cosmology, philosophy, theology to alchemy, physics, mathematics, astronomy, and medicine concluding with a chapter on the gnostic tradition. For this edition, Dr Nasr has written a preface surveying the fields covered in the book since its first appearance in 1968, and has provided a supplement that brings the bibliography up to date.
