The Five Days Peregrination Around the Isle of Sheppey of William Hogarth and His Fellow Pilgrims, Scott, Tothall, Thornhill, and Forrest (1732)
""The Five Days Peregrination Around The Isle Of Sheppey"" is a book written by William Hogarth and published in 1732. It documents a five-day journey that Hogarth and his fellow pilgrims, Scott, Tothall, Thornhill, and Forrest, took around the Isle of Sheppey in England. The book is a combination of written descriptions and illustrations created by Hogarth himself. The journey was undertaken as a form of leisurely exploration and adventure, and the book provides a detailed account of the landscapes, people, and experiences encountered by the group during their trip. Hogarth's illustrations capture the essence of the journey, showcasing the beauty of the natural surroundings, the architecture of the towns and villages they visited, and the characters they encountered along the way.In addition to its travelogue elements, the book also offers a glimpse into the social and cultural context of the time, with Hogarth using his observations to comment on the political and social issues of the day. Overall, ""The Five Days Peregrination Around The Isle Of Sheppey"" is a fascinating historical document that provides a unique insight into the life and times of William Hogarth and his contemporaries. This Is A New Release Of The Original 1732 Edition. This scarce antiquarian book is a facsimile reprint of the old original and may contain some imperfections such as library marks and notations. ... When Kitty falls to her death in one of Covent Garden’s seedier tenements at the end of 1735, it’s seen as an unfortunate accident. But the memory haunts the nightmares of Kitty’s neighbour, Jeremiah Potts. Jeremiah scrapes his own poor living by running errands for local artists, the most famous being William Hogarth – seemingly unstoppable since the success of his Harlot’s Progress. Hogarth has started work on a new painting that shows a woman walking across Covent Garden Piazza. The image raises immediate questions for the artist’s wife, Jane – but also appears to hark back to something in her husband’s past. A similar, half-forgotten history torments another local resident, Prudence Hyssop, who is determined that the New Year of 1736 should signal a fresh start. Meanwhile, gentleman-painter Jonathan Smallow has one thing only in mind. Murder. In a fast-moving tale of lost innocence, thwarted ambition, artistic skulduggery, and blind passion, the lives of Jeremiah, Prudence, Smallow, and the Hogarths are thrown together in new and unforeseen ways. Set against the vibrant backdrop of Covent Garden, Mr Hogarth’s Morning paints a compelling picture that blends dark desires with colourful comedy to create a totally new and unforgettable view of eighteenth-century London.

One of the most visible, popular, and significant artists of his generation, William Hogarth (1697–1764) is best known for his acerbic, strongly moralising works, which were mass-produced and widely disseminated as prints during his lifetime. This volume is a fascinating look into the notorious English satirical artist’s life, presenting Anecdotes of William Hogarth, Written by Himself — a collection of autobiographical vignettes supplemented with short texts and essays written by his contemporaries, first published in 1785.
WILLIAM HOGARTH VISIONS IN PRINT
Hogarth’s pictures are among the most iconic of the eighteenth century – his cacophonous crowds, bustling streets, polite or not-sopolite companies, and all too revealing tales of human folly, vividly bring the world around him to life. Their fame and popularity rests, above all, on their widespread circulation as prints, not only in England but around the globe, from the artist’s lifetime to today. Having first trained as an engraver, this remained an important aspect of his art and success. It is in print that he is often at his most creative and original, capturing, in his own words, ‘the perpetual fluctuations in the manners of the times’. Taking its cue from the portfolio collections Hogarth himself curated, this book gathers together a selection of his best loved and most inventive prints.

Born, raised, and retired in Mississippi, Lucy Somerville Howorth (1895-1997) was a champion for the rights of women long before feminism emerged as a widely recognised movement. As told by Dorothy S. Shawhan and Martha H. Swain, hers is a remarkable life story-from a small-town upbringing to a career as an attorney, an activist, and the last of a generation of New Deal women in Washington, D.C. She held a presidential appointment under every chief executive from Franklin Roosevelt to John Kennedy.Howorth was a fervent believer in the power of organisations to bring about change, and she became known for her leadership qualities, acumen, and quick appraisal of social problems, particularly as they affected women. Shawhan and Swain point out that her winsome personality, small stature, and delightful sense of humor also aided her as a female aspiring in a man's world. In 1931 she was elected to the Mississippi House of Representatives and, after campaigning for Roosevelt, was rewarded by the new president with a federal appointment. She served in a number of subsequent roles, rising to become general counsel of the War Claims Commission, at that time the highest legal position in an executive commission ever filled by a woman.Howorth worked relentlessly for the advancement of women, especially through the American Association for University Women and the National Federation of Business and Professional Women. She lobbied for equality in the workplace, helping to effect significant advances in government and the professions. In 1944, at the request of Eleanor Roosevelt, Howorth delivered the keynote speech at the White House Conference on Women in Postwar Policy-Making, the most memorable of her many public addresses. This first-ever biography of Howorth bestows long-overdue recognition of her many notable achievements and illuminates the activism of women in the decades often considered to be the doldrums of the women's movement.
