In the past few years, the concept of creating microwave antennas using microstrip has attracted increasing attention and viable practical designs are now emerging. The purpose of this monograph is to present the reader with an appreciation of the underlying physical action, up-to-date theoretical treatments, useful antenna design approaches and the overall state-of-the-art situation. The emphasis is on antenna engineering design, but to achieve this goal it has been necessary to delve into the behaviour of microstrip in a much wider sense and also include aspects of electromagnetic analysis. As a consequence, the monograph will also be of interest to microstrip circuit designers and to some extent those seeking electromagnetic problems of a challenging nature. The astronomical progress in miniaturising and integrating electronic circuits in the past decade has recently crerated a positive demand for a new generation of antenna systems. In principle, microstrip antennas are thin planar configurations that are leightweight, low cost, easy to manufacture and can be made conformal with the surfaces of vehicles, missiles etc. The compatibility of microstrip antennas with integrated electronics is another great advantage. However, the microstrip wavetrapping effects inhibit the radiation mechanism and must be taken into account in antenna design. Wave-trapping effects in substrates involve the study of surface waves and discontinuities in open waveguide structures. The microstrip antenna designer must therefore encompass many more effects than previously considered by microstrip circuit designers. It is for these reasons that the scope of this monograph is necessarily somewhat wider than the title may suggest. The ten chapters are a blend of introductory, practical and theoretical treatments and likely future developments are also highlighted. A good selection of past and current references are given and each chapter concludes with a helpful summary comment.

The temperature on earth varies over a wide range whereas man can only work comfortably in a quite narrow temperature range that has to be artificially maintained. In addition, many industries have extensive requirements for temperature control. Thus control engineers are called upon very frequently to design temperature control loops. A general knowledge of control engineering is of course useful in designing temperature control loops.However, temperature control has some special features: (i) asymmetries caused by the usually differing mechanisms of heating and cooling(ii) complex nonlinear heat-transfer effects(iii) highly application-dependent measurement problems. The intention of this book is to treat the theory and practice of temperature measurement and control, and important related topics such as energy management and air pollution, at a level suitable for engineering and science undergraduate and postgraduate students, and in a manner designed to make the book valuable to practising engineers. There are no specific prerequisites for the book although a knowledge of elementary control theory could be useful. The philosophy of the book is a compromise between fundamentals and practical guidelines. It is the author's firm belief that it is highly desirable to obtain a good insight into theoretical fundamentals (deeper than can be justified on grounds of immediate utility) before embarking on practical applications. The aim has been to produce a practically oriented text within a firm theoretical outline. The first half of the book is an application oriented survey of temperature measurement techniques and devices. The second half is concerned mainly with temperature control in both simple and complex situations. There are chapters on heat sources, commercially available controllers, temperature control in buildings and energy conservation. The book ends with an appendix that rapidly surveys the underpinning thermodynamic theory.

Parameter estimation is the process of using observations from a system to develop mathematical models that adequately represent the system dynamics. The assumed model consists of a finite set of parameters, the values of which are calculated using estimation techniques. Most of the techniques that exist are based on least-square minimisation of error between the model response and actual system response. Research and evaluation in the human services usually involves a relatively large number of variables. We are interested in phenomena that have many aspects and many causes. The techniques needed to deal with many variables go beyond those of introductory statistics. Elementary procedures in statistics are limited in usefulness to situations in which we have two or three variables. When we have more than that, application of elementary techniques will often yield mis­ leading results. Why are elementary techniques inadequate when applied to many variables? Why, for example, should we not simply interpret a series of correlations of independent and dependent variables? The answer lies in the fact that these correlations are not independent pieces of information. The correlations of vari­ ables x and z with yare affected by the association of x with z. Hence, talk about the "effect" of x on y will be somewhat ambiguous, since we will be in­ cluding in that effect some of the effects of z. We would like to be able to sort out these effects. This is the problem of "estimation," that is, estimating the relationships or effects between variables, taking into account their relationships with other variables.

In the United States and other western nations, debates rage over whether welfare, medical care, educational programs, and many other aspects of public policy should be the responsibility of central govern­ ment, local government, or the private sector. In most nations, the issues of regional autonomy and decentralization are constantly in the news, with intensity varying from mild debate to open warfare.
