Kay Norton

The life of a multitalented legend Sallie Martin combined fame as a performer with a far-sighted business acumen that brought Black gospel music to a national audience and laid the foundation for the industry that followed. Kay Norton's biography follows Martin's parallel careers from her early plans to grow the genre through her celebrity in the 1960s–1970s and eventful retirement. "Same old Sallie Martin, same old Jesus," she once told audiences, a reflection of both her musical style and unapologetic approach to life. Cofounder of the National Conference of Gospel Choirs and Choruses, Martin also co-established the pioneering Black music publisher Martin and Morris Music Studio. Her group the Sallie Martin Singers took Chicago gospel to all points of the compass and Martin mentored and employed dozens of aspiring vocalists and instrumentalists. Norton looks at Martin's important relationships and the challenges she faced, while placing her accomplishments and legacy on the arc of gospel music history. In-depth and powerful, Sallie Martin, Mother of Gospel Music tells the story of one woman's role in shaping the music and business of Black gospel.

Process

Kay Boyle

University of Illinois Press
2006
nidottu
Three quarters of a century after the manuscript of Kay Boyle’s first novel disappeared, a carbon copy of it was discovered by Sandra Spanier, the preeminent Boyle authority. Set off by Spanier’s substantial introduction, Process is published here for the first time in paperback. A classic bildungsroman, Process tells the story of Kerith Day, who is in search of her own identity and place in the world. A keenly critical observer of the dreary industrial landscape and the beaten-down inhabitants of her native Cincinnati, Ohio, Kerith is determined to discover something better. She places her faith in art and politics and sets off for France, where workers and radicals are on the same side.

Time and Sacrifice in the Aztec Cosmos

Time and Sacrifice in the Aztec Cosmos

Kay Almere Read

Indiana University Press
1998
sidottu
This introduction to the imaginative world of the Mexica (or Aztec) explores sacrifice in the richly textured life of 16th-century Mexico. Kay Almere Read describes a universe in which every object was timed by a given lifespan and in which sacrifice was the mechanism by which time functioned. This book makes a convincing case for what sacrifice meant religiously and for how it came to be that human sacrifice of staggering proportions could be accepted, matter-of-factly, by the Mexica people.
How Political Parties Work

How Political Parties Work

Kay Lawson

Praeger Publishers Inc
1994
sidottu
This important volume examines the inner dynamics of political parties with the intention of finding out how parties really work. Specialists on Germany, France, New Zealand, Norway, Japan, India, Belgium, Israel, Poland, Britain, and the United States provide analyses of the ways in which power is developed and exercised in those countries--who is trying to do what, within the party and by means of the party, and how successful they are. Political parties are not monoliths, as they have tended to be treated in party system research; rather, they have differentiated internal structures, layers, and levels, and on each of these the motivations and objectives of the participants may be very different. By looking within, these authors provide an understanding of the internal play of party power and why parties function as they do within the broader political arena.
World Military Leaders

World Military Leaders

Kay Philips; Mostafa Rejai

Praeger Publishers Inc
1996
sidottu
Focusing on 45 military leaders from four continents and 13 countries, spread across four centuries, this study paints, for the first time, a collective, comparative portrait of high-ranking military officers. The authors develop an interactional theory of military leaders, stressing the interplay between sociodemographic variables, psychological dynamics, and situational factors. They examine age and birthplace, socioeconomic status, family life, ethnicity and religion, education and occupation, activities and experiences, and ideologies and attitudes. They find military leaders to be a remarkably coherent and homogeneous group of men propelled toward the military by a combination of nationalism, imperialism, relative deprivation, love deprivation, marginality, and vanity.
Leaders and Leadership

Leaders and Leadership

Three interrelated objectives provide the subject of this study: to cover a wide range of topics on leaders and leadership; to present up-to-date treatments of those topics; and to offer extensive bibliographies for further study and research. The opening chapter defines leadership. Subsequent chapters treat the relationship between leaders and followers and the prerequisite skills of leaders; transforming leaders, transactional leaders, and military leaders; the motivations of leaders; the functions of leaders; comparative studies of leaders; women as leaders; and research frontiers in the study of leadership. This study should prove very useful for political scientists, for sociologists, and for military historians and professionals.
