Towards a Sociology of Schizophrenia

Towards a Sociology of Schizophrenia

Keith Doubt

University of Toronto Press
1996
pokkari
Schizophrenia, at one time considered by many clinicians to be a psychological response to an oppressive upbringing, is now generally accepted as a physical illness. While Keith Doubt does not quarrel with this current view, he does challenge the positivist assumptions that tend to accompany it. Throughout this fascinating survey of the literature on schizophrenia, Doubt presents a critique of society's neglect of the mentally ill and promotes a humanistic understanding of the affected person as a social being. Doubt draws on several disciplines and uses the works of such diverse writers as Vygotsky, Piaget, Deleuze, Laing, and Torrey. While he rebukes medical practitioners for ignoring the social dimensions of schizophrenia, he is equally critical of post-modernism's tendency to valorize the mentally ill. Nor does he sympathize with particular sociological approaches which, he believes, emphasize society's reactions to the illness - often at the expense of the afflicted person. Thus, a major part of Doubt's project is to place the individual at the centre of sociological theorizing about schizophrenia. This thought-provoking study offers an alternative perspective on schizophrenia to scholars and professionals, as well as to those who live with the disease. Doubt offers practical recommendations, which he hopes will bring some relief to sufferers, and helpful insights to those engaged in treating or assisting people with schizophrenia.
Worship: A Primer in Christian Ritual

Worship: A Primer in Christian Ritual

Keith F. Pecklers

What is worship? Keith F. Pecklers, SJ, answers this important theological question by focusing on the basics of Christian worship. Beginning with the definitions of such terms as ritual" and *liturgy - he writes in a very readable style about the historical/theological foundations of worship, tracing the evolution of Christian liturgy from the earliest centuries of the Christian era up to the reforms of Vatican II.Pecklers focuses on such liturgical issues of importance in our post-Vatican II Church as: inculturation, popular religion, and the social responsibility that authentic worship requires. He also considers some key social issues of the twenty-first century and their impact on our worship: the break-up of the stale parish community and decline in church attendance; the clergy shortage and priestless parishes; ecumenical liturgical cooperation and interreligious dialogue; the credibility of preaching; and how worship welcomes or excludes the marginated.Chapters are *Worship and Ritual, - *Worship in Development and Decline, - *Worship in Crisis and Challenge, - *Worship in Transition, - *Worship and Culture, - *Worship and Popular Religion, - *Worship and Society, - and *Worship and the Future of Christianity. -Keith F. Pecklers, SJ, SLD, is professor of liturgy at the Pontifical Gregorian University in Rome and professor of liturgical history at the Pontifical Liturgical Institute of Saint'Anselmo. Liturgical Press recently published his book Dynamic Equivalence. He received Catholic Press Association awards for two other Liturgical Press publications, The Unread Vision and Liturgy for the New Millennium."

Normal0falsefalsefalseMicrosoftInternetExplorer4Through a Glass Darkly is a collection of essays by scholars who argue that Baptists are frequently misrepresented, by outsiders as well as insiders, as members of an unchanging monolithic sect. In contemporary discussions of religious denominations, it is often fashionable and easy to make bold claims regarding the history, beliefs, and practices of certain groups. Select versions of Baptist history have been used to vindicate incomplete or inaccurate assertions, attitudes, and features of Baptist life and thought. Historical figures quickly become saints, and overarching value systems can minimize the unsavory realities that would contribute to a truer interpretation of Baptist life. The essays in this volume use the term Baptist in the broadest sense to refer to those Christians who identify themselves as Baptists and who baptize by immersion as a non-sacramental church rite. Over the past four hundred years, Baptists have grown from a persecuted minority to a significant portion of America's religious population. They have produced their fair share of controversies and colorful characters that have, in turn, contributed to a multifaceted history. But what does it mean to be a "real Baptist"? Some look to historical figures as heroic exemplars of Baptist core values. Others consider cultural, social, or political issues to be guideposts for Baptist identity. Through a Glass Darkly dives deeper into history for answers, revealing a more complete version of the expansive and nuanced history of one of America's most influential religious groups. By 2050, half the planet will be living on a knife edge. Communities cannot afford to wait for cash-strapped governments to address inequality and climate change. But how can they afford to take action themselves?Cities, towns, neighbourhoods, and villages can and must become supercommunities - ecosystems able to sustain their natural, human, and industrial capitals. A supercommunity evolves from within to meet new challenges in times of crisis. It removes friction from collaboration so that local people become stakeholders and local organisations work together effectively. Powered by social trading, a supercommunity leverages progressive economic ideas and digital tools for local wellness.Today, a tiny fraction of global investment is into social impact. Supercommunities will unlock the true potential of finance by offering investors worldwide the chance to become stakeholders in good things."We will need to replace short term thinking with long term planning and execution if we are to regain upward motion towards common benefit for everyone on Spaceship Earth. To begin, read this book "From the foreword by Vint Cerf, Co-Inventor of the Internet"Ranging from ancient history to economics to psychology to public policy 'Supercommunities' is both authoritative and highly readable. It puts our current challenges in context, shows why change is necessary and provides a trove of practical ideas for change makers."From the foreword by Matthew Taylor, Chief Executive, The RSAPublished by Meghan-Kiffer Press (mkpress dot com), a research and publishing company tightly focused on innovation at the intersection of business and technology.
Anger: A Message for Men

Anger: A Message for Men

Anger cannot be managed or massaged--chances are you know that already. Nor can it be denied, avoided, projected or repressed with any satisfactory result. But here is the miracle: Anger can be transformed into its opposite, which is inner peace. What you may regard as an obstacle on your life-journey is revealed as the way itself."Keith Ashford skillfully and courageously reaches right into the fire burning inside us that all too often rages unattended, out of control, or is poorly managed at best. Pitching his tent on the lip of the volcano, Ashford joins a precious few-Robert Bly, James Hillman, Ram Dass, and Thich Nhat Hanh among them-who have peered into this paradoxically dark yet fiery zone of the male psyche, reporting back with healing insight, compassion, chutzpah, and humour. This book offers wise counsel, practical advice, and safe passage for men and women through a particularly perilous and forbidding region of our inner landscape. A necessary journey has now become an easier, more illuminating one."Dr. Michael Hurley, Royal Military College of Canada"Male anger is a weapon of mass destruction. It wounds the folks around the angry man-at work, at home, or in the community-as well as the man himself. In Anger, Keith Ashford provides an intelligent meditation on male anger, taking you to places in your psyche that you might not expect. Indeed, you may even find your anger rising, if you are expecting a quick, easy solution to the anger that so often captures you, for although Ashford presents anger as relatively simple stuff, he knows it's also complicating, and requires this fascinating journey to start to untangle."Harvey Schachter, "Managing Books" columnist, The Globe and Mail"This is a very dangerous book. If you take Keith Ashford's wisdom and do your homework, you will never be the same. This practical, real, and imaginative manual for discovering, accepting, and dancing the anger that is imbedded in most of our male lives can open doors to freedoms we never imagined or dared ask for. Bravo. Every male over twenty should read this and go to bed with it every night until he 'gets it' "Kelly Walker, author of Loss of Soul

My name is John Black and I have a date with destiny. Actually, I had a date with Carrie, but it got postponed due to destiny. That's probably not an excuse most girls hear, even though it's true. I need to go to the city, to try to finish things once and for all. But there's a problem. A new type of power has been discovered, and it's exactly what people like me don't want. Exactly what someone could use to shut us all down, permanently. So what do I do? Abuse this new power to fight my enemies, or live in fear they'll do the same to me? Either way, I don't think everyone's getting out of this alive. Destiny sucks.

Theorizing a Colonial Caribbean-Atlantic Imaginary
This book develops a theory of a Caribbean-Atlantic imaginary by exploring the ways two colonial texts represent the consciousnesses of Amerindians, Africans, and Europeans at two crucial points marking respectively the origins and demise of slavocratic systems in the West Indies. Focusing on Richard Ligon’s History of Barbados (1657) and Matthew ‘Monk’ Lewis’ Journal of a West India Proprietor (1834), the study identifies specific myths and belief systems surrounding sugar and obeah as each of these came to stand for concepts of order and counterorder, and to figure the material and symbolic power of masters and slaves respectively. Rooting the imaginary in indigenous Caribbean myths, the study adopts the pre-Columbian origins of the imaginary ascribed by Wilson Harris to a cross cultural bridge or arc, and derives the mythic origins for the centrality of sugar in the imaginary’s constitution from Kamau Brathwaite. The book’s central organizing principle is an oppositional one, grounded on the order/counterorder binary model of the imaginary formulated by the philosopher-social theorist Cornelius Castoriadis. The study breaks new ground by reading Ligon’s History and Lewis’ Journal through the lens of the slaves’ imaginaries of hidden knowledge. By redefining Lewis’ subjectivity through his poem’s most potent counterordering symbol, the demon-king, this book advances recent scholarly interest in Jamaica’s legendary Three Fingered Jack.

The city of Preston in Lancashire is renowned for its industrial heritage, with centuries of textile manufacturing and its boom years during the Industrial Revolution. However, as this book reveals, industry is but one aspect of its rich and fascinating past. In Preston: A Potted History, local author Keith Johnson explores the city’s heritage, charting its journey from earliest times right up to the present day. He highlights the significant events, incredible achievements and enthralling interludes that have taken place in the city, which was known in Saxon times as ‘Priest’s Town’. Not surprisingly monks and monasteries, churches and chapels, preachers and parsons have all contributed to the growth of the place. Through successive centuries the author looks at Preston’s people and their progress, the transport and trade, industry and innovations, celebrations and ceremonies, education and entertainment, along with the political and military conflicts. This engaging and informative book reveals the poverty, turmoil, triumphs and transformation that Preston has undergone throughout history. Illustrated throughout, this accessible historical portrait will be of great interest to residents, visitors and all those with links to the city.

Hassler Whitney was a giant of twentieth-century mathematics. This biography paints a picture of him and includes dozens of revealing anecdotes. Mathematically, he had a rare detector that went off whenever he spotted a piece of mathematical gold, and he would then draw countless pictures, gradually forging a path from hunch to proof. This geometric path is seldom reflected in the rigor of his formal papers, but thanks to a close friendship and many conversations over decades, author Kendig was able to see how he actually worked. This book shows this through accessible accounts of his major mathematical contributions, with figures copiously supplied.Whitney is probably best known for introducing the grandfather of today's innumerable embedding theorems--his strong embedding theorem stating that any smooth manifold can be smoothly embedded in a Euclidean space of twice the manifold's dimension. This in turn led to several standard techniques used every day in algebraic topology. Whitney also established the fundamentals of graph theory, the four-color problem, matroids, extending smooth functions, and singularities of smooth functions. He almost never used complicated technical machinery, so most of his work is accessible to a general reader with a modest mathematical background. His math-music connection was intense: He played piano, violin, and viola and won ``best composition of the year'' while earning a Bachelor's degree in music at Yale. He was an accomplished mountain climber, and as a tinkerer, at age sixteen he built the large-format camera used to take this book's cover photograph. Whitney's family generously provided dozens of photographs appearing here for the very first time. This biography is a revealing portrait of a fascinating personality and a titan of twentieth-century mathematics.
