Video Microscopy

Video Microscopy

Shinya Inoué; Kenneth R. Spring

Springer-Verlag New York Inc.
2012
nidottu
The current edition of Video Microscopy has been totally revised to reflect the advances in the tools for electronic imaging, processing, recording, and analysis, as well as applications that are being made in video microscopy and related modes of electronic imaging. The less spiral organization of the revised edition reflects an audience expected to be more experi enced in video and computer image processing than in the earlier days when coupling of video equipment and computers to the light microscope was still considered to be a novelty. Nevertheless, we have emphasi2;ed the how-tos, as well as the fundamental principles, involved in imaging and processing ih the light microscope, the human visual system, video and related electronic imaging, and the digital image processor in the hope that the reader will develop enough understanding, not only to apply rationally what is available, but also to contribute actively to the development of this evolving field. In the text, the terms appearing in the Glossary are printed in bold type, generally, at first appearance. Italics are used for emphasis.
Historical Dictionary of Hume's Philosophy

Historical Dictionary of Hume's Philosophy

sidottu
The philosopher David Hume was born in Edinburgh, Scotland on April 26, 1711. Known for his re-thinking of causation, morality, and religion, Hume has left a lasting mark on history. James Madison, the "father" of the U.S. Constitution, drew heavily on Hume's writing, especially his "Idea of Perfect Commonwealth," which combated the belief at the time that a large country could not sustain a republican form of government. Hume's writing also influenced Adam Smith's Wealth of Nations and the philosophy of Immanuel Kant. This edition attempts a broader picture of Hume’s philosophy including more detail on the elements of his psychology, aesthetics, social and political philosophy as well as his legacy in contemporary topics of race, feminism, animal ethics, and environmental issues. This second edition of Historical Dictionary of Hume's Philosophy contains a chronology, an introduction, and an extensive bibliography. The dictionary section has over 100 cross-referenced entries covering key terms, as well as brief discussions of Hume's major works and of some of his most important predecessors, contemporaries, and successors. This book is an excellent resource for students, researchers, and anyone wanting to know more about David Hume.

A European novel of racial mixing and "passing" in early twentieth-century America that serves as a unique account of transnational and transcultural racial attitudes that continue to reverberate today. Hugo Bettauer's The Blue Stain, a novel of racial mixing and "passing," starts and ends in Georgia but also takes the reader to Vienna and New York. First published in 1922, the novel tells the story of Carletto, son of a white European academic and an African American daughter of former slaves, who, having passed as white in Europe and fled to America after losing his fortune, resists being seen as "black" before ultimately accepting that identityand joining the early movement for civil rights. Never before translated into English, this is the first novel in which a German-speaking European author addresses early twentieth-century racial politics in the United States - notonly in the South but also in the North. There is an irony, however: while Bettauer's narrative aims to sanction a white/European egalitarianism with respect to race, it nevertheless exhibits its own brand of racism by assertingthat African Americans need extensive enculturation before they are to be valued as human beings. The novel therefore serves as a unique historical account of transnational and transcultural racial attitudes of the period that continue to reverberate in our present globalized world. Hugo Bettauer (1872-1925) was a prolific Austrian writer and journalist, a very early victim of the Nazis. Peter Höyng is Associate Professor of German Studies at Emory University. Chauncey J. Mellor is Emeritus Professor of German at the University of Tennessee, Knoxville. Kenneth R. Janken is Professor of African American and Diaspora Studies at the University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill.

Civil Commitment of Sexually Dangerous Persons

Civil Commitment of Sexually Dangerous Persons

The 109th Congress passed legislation that allows the federal government to civilly commit "sexually dangerous persons". Civil commitment, as it relates to sex offenders, is when a state retains custody of an individual, found by a judge or jury to be a "sexually dangerous person" by involuntarily committing the person to a secure mental health facility after the offender's prison sentence is done. In 1990, the state of Washington passed the first civil commitment law for sexually dangerous persons. Currently, 18 other states and the federal government have similar laws. Moreover, the Supreme Court, in Kansas v. Hendricks and Kansas v. Crane, ruled that current civil commitment laws are constitutional. The civil commitment of sex offenders centres on the belief that sex offenders are more likely than other offenders to re-offend. However, data on sex offender recidivism is varied. Data show that the recidivism risk for sex offenders may be lower than it is typically thought to be; in fact, some studies show that sex offenders recidivate at a lower rate than many other criminals. Other studies show that, given time, almost all sex offenders will commit a new sex crime. Most discussions about recidivism examine ways to decrease it; for example, by providing sex offenders with treatment. Research on the efficacy of sex offender treatment is promising, but it cannot prove that treatment reduces recidivism.

What if you could reduce or avoid expensive pharmaceutical medicines, feel better, and "outsmart Diabetes" with seven "common sense" ways? What if you added ten more easy approaches to make you feel healthier? Do you struggle with diabetes to control blood sugars? I've had diabetes now for sixty years, and I know from my own experience that "it's not as easy as it looks." The first thirty years were much more complicated than the last thirty because I've learned from the "school of hard knocks," medical research and the wisdom of God how to outsmart diabetes. From my first book, "The Way of Wisdom for Diabetes," one reviewer said, "The first book that has really been helpful in my 30 year battle with diabetes." Now in this book, you will learn these seven essential ways . . .Exercise after each meal, Eat fewer carbohydrates and more protein, Practice gratitude, Sleep well each night, Stay hydrated, Continually keep track of blood glucose, Take advantage of opportunities to help others. This book is about making needed lifestyle changes easier using 17 wise "common sense" ways. I'm a survivor of diabetes for sixty years. For twenty-five years, I've facilitated hospital and community diabetes support groups, doing monthly educational seminars. I was awarded ten years ago, the 50-Year Medal for Diabetes Management by the Joslin Diabetes Center in Boston. The Joslin Diabetes Center is affiliated with Harvard Medical School. I am a participant in their medical research study of medalists, which is discovering protective factors to prevent complications in those with diabetes like kidney damage This book applies to both those with Type 1 or Type 2 Diabetes because it is about lifestyle. Included in this book are the resources of God's wisdom - the Bible, medical research, and uplifting, informative stories that will motivate you to practice these approaches By using these 17 wise ways for more than thirty years, I've maintained an A1c of 5.9 - 6.3 with only a few exceptions (like ten years ago my A1c was checked at 6.7).* The reason I mention this is to reinforce how beneficial and useful these wise "common sense" guidelines are. Start reading; healthier and happier days will be in your future (*What should your blood glucose average be? American Association of Clinical Endocrinologists endorses 140 or less, which is an A1c of 6.5 percent or less. American Diabetes Association suggests 7.0 percent or less, which is 154 average. A normal non-diabetic A1c is considered 5.6 percent or less.)If you've had enough of the bad news, then get my book "7 Biblical Ways for Healthy Living." You will read one uplifting example after another that will give you a shot in your life's arm of encouragement. Each chapter begins with challenges we face for healthy living, followed by stories that overcome those challenges. Simple ways or prescriptions to daily implement close each chapter. So, if you need more hope and encouragement for maintaining a healthy lifestyle, get this book My other book you will not want to miss is The Way of Wisdom for Diabetes This book includes the history of Diabetes management from 1914 to today. You will learn about the discovery of insulin in 1921 by Dr. Frederick Banting and Charles Best. Read the exciting stories of how insulin saved young people's lives in just the nick of time. Be encouraged by how they overcame unbelievable challenges and went on to live good lives

Introduction When the study of heredity and variation first came to be treated as a scientific subject-and this, one must remember, was only just over a hundred years ago-there was an unfortunate separation between the disciplines of cytology and experimental breeding. This separation was based partly on a lack of understanding and partly on a lack of the desire to understand. Even WILLIAM BATESON, the first apostle of mendelism in England, had a blind spot for cytology and for many years dogmatically refused to believe that MENDEL'S determinants were transmitted and distributed by the chromosomes. This separation between cytology and experimental breeding is one which persists, in a measure, even today, simply because there are two quite different, though complementary, techniques available for the study of heredity and variation. On the one hand, one can study directly the structure and behaviour of the actual vehicles which transmit the genetic determinants from one generation to the next. This is the method employed by those who study genetics through a microscope. The alternative method is that used by the experimental breeder who, in default of being able to watch the hereditary factors segregate from each other directly, is obliged to examine the constitution of the germ cells indirectly by sampling, and usually at random, the products of a controlled mating.

material can serve both autocatalytic and heterocatalytic functions. Thus not only is it unique in itB capacity for self-replication but its base sequence determines the specificity of proteins. And enzyme proteins are immediately responsible for the peripheral metabolism which enables the organism to impose its own kind of order on the raw materials it absorbs. The course of development is determined not only by the nature of the genetic material but by its over-all amount and the relative frequency of the different functional units. Differential rates of epigenetic activity matter also. In theory, therefore, differential development within or even between individuals could be determined by the differential replication of the various genetic elements or by their differential activity. And further variation could arise by the differential transmission of these elements between cells. Indeed it would appear that all these possibilities are exploited by living systems. If like is to beget like, however, any genetic change which occurs during development must be undone, or else germinal units preserved from change must be set aside. As far as is known, genetic changes, even those involving only quantity or relative amounts, are reversible to only a very limited extent so that a change once done cannot be undone. Consequently genetic changes during the development of presumptive germ-lines are either non existant or minor and confined to a small class of un aggregated deter minants.

neoessity for making it. Yet, clearly, the problem of development is largely one of filling "the vacuum between determinant and character" (DARLINGTON 1951). Nowadays the chromosome theory can be presented in much greater detail and with utter confidence, but its two main features remain the same. However, while the role of the chromosomes in heredity and development has been appreciated for a long time, the manner in which they perform their genetic and epigenetic functions has become amenable to critical investigation only in recent years. There is, therefore, still an unmistakable tendency to think of chromosomes in terms of the discrete threads of cell division and, in keeping with this conception, the chromosome cycle is gen erally considered in relation to the microscopically visible changes in morphology which occur during the mechanically active phases of mitosis and meiosis. Chromosome phenotype, however, changes not only during division but throughout the cell cycle. The changes which occur during interphase are, of course, scarcely revealed in morphological modifications of the restless "resting" nucleus. Consequently they are less obvious and correspondingly less amenable to investigation. This accounts for the concentration on the countable karyotype, with its visible properties of pairing and pycnosity, and the measurable movements of separation and segregation.

There is an increasing need to construct engineering structures in the Arctic seas. The requirement is principally generated by the oil and gas industry, because of the substantial reserves that are known to exist offshore in the Beaufort Sea, the Caspian Sea, the Barents Sea, the Pacific Ocean off the coast of Sakhalin, the Canadian Arctic, and almost certainly elsewhere. Structures have to withstand the severe environmental forces generated by sea ice, a subject that is developing rapidly but is still far from completely understood. Underwater pipelines have to be safe against ice gouging and strudel scour, but also have to be constructed safely and economically. The social and human environment has to be understood and respected. This important book intentionally takes a broad view, and vividly accounts for the many and often subtle interactions between the different factors. It is illustrated by case studies of actual projects.

This title considers the philosophical debates surrounding equality and education. "Educational Equality and the New Selective Schooling" by Harry Brighouse was initially published by the Philosophy of Education Society of Great Britain in 2000. In this new edition, Brighouse has updated his argument, Kenneth R Howe and James Tooley have contributed counter-arguments and Graham Haydon has provided a foreword and afterword drawing the debates together. The issues debated in this new edition of 'Educational Equality" include: What is Educational Equality? Why Does Educational Equality Matter? And is Educational Equality Possible? "Educational Equality" raises issues which will be of interest to all involved in educational equality, including teachers, policy makers and educationalists. This innovative series is addressed to practitioners and policy-makers. It highlights the critical perspectives that philosophy can bring to bear on current education policy and provides a lively discussion of the issues. It aims to stimulate debate and to contribute to better informed educational initiatives.
